To actually hate people who say bought instead of brought

GentleButter · 08/04/2024 21:41

Why?
WHY DO PEOPLE SAY BOUGHT WHEN THEY SHOULD SAY BROUGHT?
It's unbearable.
I cannot bear it when someone says it.
I'm polite, so I have to use every muscle in my throat and mouth to stop myself from screaming "But you didn't BUY it! So WHY are you saying BOUGHT????"
It happens constantly.
I was in a meeting at work. Someone said "Yes, I bought this issue up the other day" internally, I screamed "But you didn't BUY this issue, so WTF are you saying you BOUGHT it?".
This goes on and on all around me.
Worst of all, my own husband says it, which is insufferable. No amount of me correcting him will make him understand the nonsense of saying 'bought' when he should say 'brought'. And he went to private school, so he was well educated and he still can't get it right. There's no excuse.

False bravado.

LeaderBee · 11/04/2024 11:49

It's clearly an Americanism because of the way they pronounce "do, dew and due" all the same, but it especially gets my goat when you see it written down:

For example:

"i'm broke this month but its okay because i'm do to be paid in a days time"

"I have a date with a cute girl later in the week, it's my first one and don't know what we can due, can you guys give me some ideas"?

Yack! 😭

SunCreamQueenie · 11/04/2024 12:04

How annoying! Genuinely never heard this ever... you know the next person I speak to is going to say it and get on my last nerve, don't you?!

GentleButter · 11/04/2024 11:17

That wasn't my autocorrect, that was me typing speedily after a couple of glasses of wine whilst doing other things at the same time. I then posted immediately without reading over my text to check for errors.
I could easily see the glaring errors soon after I'd posted, but I'd missed the chance to use the edit function. Although, as I've said, I'm really not bothered in the slightest by errors caused by lack of attention on mobile phones, and I actually laughed to myself about it.
You, however, are taking this very seriously indeed, since you won't let it drop.
I'm going out now for another nice day with my loved ones. The sun is shining and I'm off to enjoy myself.
I recommend you do the same!🤗

Your loved ones like your husband, who you hate, apparently?

I will (kindly) educate you: you need a full stop before your closing speechmarks.

But it's okay, I forgive you.

Edited

Damn it! 😂

I don't profess to be perfect when it comes to my grammar but there are many things that irritate me!

PlumpAndDeliciousFatcat · 11/04/2024 12:43

Obviously, we would all have a lot more respect for the OP if she simply admitted that she got carried away while Mumsnetting under the influence and now feels a bit daft. It is equally obvious that this is not going to happen, so let's leave her to have her tinkly little laughs over how very silly and amusing we all are.

I only hear it the other way round too but it gives me the rage.
I also loath should off, would off, could off and gifted instead of given. Loads more though.

Oh dear.

"Loath" - To be reluctant
"Loathe" - to be disgusted by.

ASighMadeOfStone · 11/04/2024 13:22

@luckylavender "gifted" as a verb was in common use in the 1500s, (it's another old Norse mutating into old English word) and then lost favour as we became less precise with our use of language.

I imagine traditionalist sticklers for classical use of English are happy it's back.

Scotgran1 · 11/04/2024 19:19

I don't think we Scots do that. We also don't Say drawRing ' or lay _for lie/ lying down.🙄 or haitch.

MsLuxLisbon · 11/04/2024 20:30

The Scots who insist that 'haitch' is correct make me roll my eyes. I am a well educated Anglo-Scot. Well spoken Scots do NOT say 'haitch'!

Well spoken Irish people definitely do.

I don't know about Scots but I'd imagine there are regional variations if you and others have difference experiences?

Indeed. I have a proper newsreader Irish accent, the Irish equivalent of RP, and I say Haitch as does everyone else I know from Ireland.

Gosh, it's been DAYS since we've done this.

Isn’t haitch / aitch a sectarian shibboleth?

Yes, it is in NI. Aitch = British/unionist/Protestant, haitch = Irish/nationalist/Catholic.

In Ireland it's just haitch across the board.

trainboundfornowhere · 11/04/2024 21:04

My Scottish unionist husband, father and in laws like most of if not all Rangers fans say aitch not haitch. They are from Ayrshire, West Lothian and Edinburgh.

Wilop · 11/04/2024 21:10

I’m an haitch person, scottish catholic and family all say it that way too.

Wondering if the same might apply to sectarian areas of Scotland 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's the same wherever children have been taught by Irish nuns. At least in the UK that is. Not sure about Australia or the US.

It will be interesting to see if it continues now there are fewer Irish nuns teaching these days.

Fortunately for haitch-lovers everywhere, those Irish nuns took Manhattan

As an Irish child of the 1980s I didn't learn my alphabet from nuns. Not many did even then.

I learned it from Sesame Street. They are continuing the good work today.

Just seen ’poured’ instead of ‘pored’ too 🫤 As in ‘we poured[sic] over our options’

Which reminds me of people saying ‘I’m balling my eyes out’ or ‘I balled!’…….. brings to mind gouging one’s eyes out with a melon baller. Does make sense though if you are picturing rubbing your eyes with a fist.

But unrelated but the one that annoys me is gifted. "I like your necklace" "oh thankyou I was gifted it" it makes me want to knock my own teeth out!!! The correct response would be "thankyou, it was a gift"!!!
