To Think William Wragg should leave Parliament immediately?

For anyone who doesn't know, William Wragg MP got chatting with someone on Grinder last year. He sent them intimate messages and photos, they agreed to meet up, but it didn't happen.

The Grinder person threatened to make WW's messages public and in return for their silence, Wragg gave this person direct contact numbers for other MPs. He even vouched for his blackmailer to (at least) one of his colleagues.

AIBU to think William Wragg is a fucking liability to the country?Angry

He is so stupid, easily embarrassed and weak that he readily risked the security of other MPs and the country to spare his blushes.

On a side note, surely it is not too much to expect our MPs to refrain from sending dick pics while in office?Hmm

What bothers me is not so much that he sent dick pics (sleezy but seemingly fairly common these days), but how readily he capitulated to blackmail. By giving the phone numbers of other MPs, he opened them up to potential blackmail too. And who knows what other information he might have given out in the future, had he not been caught.

If he'd handed over his own money, or god forbid been blackmailed into unwanted sexual contact then I'd be sympathetic. Handing over his colleagues' data is so scummy though.

I'd ask what others would do in this situation...

You (stupidly) send compromising pictures to someone, pictures you absolutely would not want leaked, and you're offered an 'out' at the expense of someone else.

Sad to say, many would risk it.

Telling the police would publicise it, ignoring it would risk leakage...

It's easy to criticise, but say it was your pictures, or your son's or daughter's pictures... you'd probably do the same.

Christ speak for yourself!! I would never get myself into that shit because I don’t send nudes why the fuck would I?? And he’s not a teenage boy ffs, he’s a grown adult in a high status job serving the public.
As my dh said (he’s a Dr) if he did this not only would he be sacked immediately, he would also be reported to the GMC and struck off.

Well now the Russians and Chinese know most MPs wouldn't report blackmail, it's open season.

Edited

I think it's been open season for a while. It would explain a lot of the needless damage and expensive "mistakes" that this revolting government have inflicted on our country.Angry

Haven't seen it acknowledged in this thread that of the other Tory MP's Wragg put his blackmailer in touch with, at least two of them responded to the blackmailer by voluntarily sending compromising pictures of themselves, and one of those is apparently a Cabinet minister.

If you are wondering why Wragg hasn't had the whip removed or otherwise been hauled over the coals, just bear the above in mind.

Hedgerow2 · 08/04/2024 17:19

I honestly don't know why any intelligent person would send intimate photos of themselves to anyone - let alone a complete stranger. I keep reading on threads about this topic that it's very common these days. But why would you even send photos like that to someone you're in a close relationship with? Relationships break down - sometimes acrimoniously - photos get forwarded or sent to the wrong person, phones get hacked etc etc.

But for an MP to do this just beggars belief. And then to capitulate to a blackmailer by dragging colleagues into their squalid mess is just appalling.

SerendipityJane · 08/04/2024 17:24

It's very, very simple.

They aren't intelligent. Just like ChatGPT and various LLMs can fool some people for a while, they can simulate intelligence, without possessing it.

In times gone by they'd have been in the army or church and no one would have noticed. It's only when they have to navigate the complex, real world, it's apparent.

The bar is set so low now for MPs behaviour that it's beyond belief. It shouldn't even be a discussion about whether he should still be an MP or not. If you behave in a way unbecoming of your position then you should no longer have that position. The fact that he's fessed up to what he has makes me wonder what else he has done that hasn't come to light yet, especially given as he appears so easy to blackmail

Well firstly, no I wouldn't. But if, as an ML, I did and I got caught, I would expect to be made to step down as an MP. So why hasn't he?

Imagine being a teacher and having to hold these people up as something to aspire to.

Shit, am I supposed to be holding Tory politicians up as something to aspire to? I've been a teacher for 30 years and I don't think I've ever done that!

Quite. Well said. Several attempts to normalise it on this thread. It isn’t normal.

Latest news - Wragg has now resigned from the Tory Party and is sitting as an independent.

Springisroundthecorner · 10/04/2024 08:19

Will he be the only MP doing this or just the only one who has been caught. How do politicians find the time? I thought they were so busy that's why they voted themselves big pay rises?

pah

CurrentHun · 10/04/2024 08:45

For absolute shame. He should resign his job as an MP in its entirety not collect his pay as an independent MP but not as a Tory. He’s put colleagues and professional contacts in serious danger. Why is his constituency conservative party not forcing him to step down? This isn’t normal in any way or acceptable as a response to blackmail.

The MP has also quit committee roles after admitting sharing MPs' numbers with someone on a dating app.

The constituency party can't. They don't have that power. The only option now, if he won't go voluntarily, is a recall petition. I'd certainly be signing it if I lived there. How could a vulnerable constituent needing help with a personal matter feel able to trust him now?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 10/04/2024 09:27

By the time a Recall petition was organised the closing date would likely be after Parliament's summer recess, and there is the small matter of a GE at some point within the next nine months. There's practically no point. He'll be out on his ear anyway.

Vod · 10/04/2024 09:38

He's not standing anyway. But it's pretty shit for his constituents. The GE could be 9 and a half months away yet. They deserve an MP who they can trust not to give away personal information.

Alstreena · 10/04/2024 09:58

Sadly this isn't a new occurrence.

I can vaguely remember the Profumo Affair.

Notonthestairs · 10/04/2024 10:37

As far as I am aware, there is no evidence that Profumo leaked information to Keeler.

ToryShillBot · 10/04/2024 11:09

Thank goodness he gets to keep his salary and seat. For a moment I was worried there might have been consequences.

Shit, am I supposed to be holding Tory politicians up as something to aspire to? I've been a teacher for 30 years and I don't think I've ever done that!

If you can't demonstrate respect for the democratically elected government in an educational setting, then what are the pupils going to grow up thinking ? This isn't a dig at you. It's an illustration of where the manure that people like Farage and Tommy Robinson thrive on leads to.

The casual contempt that has built up for politicians (which they single handedly achieved) corrodes at what it is to be a society. And it is driving us back from a fairly homogenous and governable country to a collection of patchwork regions that are more suited to the dark ages.

TooBigForMyBoots · 10/04/2024 21:48

Wragg should never have had to voluntarily resign the Whip or his privileged position.

He should have had his devices taken from him and been escorted from the HoC. He's a weak, treacherous liability to the UK and the security of the government.

PM Sunak is a weak, insipid, dribble of piss. Imagine being afraid to sack William Wragg for treason.

One of the (few) things I salute the tabloids and/or the Great British Public for, is their ability to give people zingy/pithy names that stick. I thought Party Marty for Martin Reynolds around Partygate was a high point but I’m particularly liking Toe-Wragg, which I saw earlier today.

Someone is human. They make a mistake (admittedly quite a significant mistake) but then they have the decency to publicly admit that mistake, take responsibility for it, work with the police and get it sorted.

I'd say that person has a lot more courage and integrity than many of our politicians.

Yes but it's highly likely that if they were a normal employee they'd be facing disciplinary action in some form for what appears to be a data breach
