Afternoon tea is a rip off largely aimed at ripping women off

Somebody suggested this to me and I’ve never thought of it that way.

You don’t get very men going for afternoon tea do you? The Mark up on afternoon tea is absolutely enormous aside from staffing and cost of the building and stuff- it must be money for old rope for the businesses concerned. Specially the ones that charge over 50 quid ahead.

Are we being conned by the whole afternoon tea debacle?

(yes cake is nice I get that)

It's £22.50 at the tearooms near me looking onto award winning gardens - always too much to eat! Considering that's a sandwich selection, savoury selection, 2 scones and 3 mini cakes per person I'm not sure how you can say it's overpriced. A smoked salmon sandwich is £5 these days at Tesco on its own!

Surely you got more than that? IME afternoon teas are quite filling: , sandwiches, cakes, scones with jam and cream. Or am I taking your comment too literally?

I think Ninja means she was daft enough to pay for the tea but only ate the sarnies, because she doesn't like cakes. So by her reckoning it was a massively expensive cuppa and small sandwiches.😂
Instead of just going to the do, but having something other than afternoon tea.

C1N1C · 09/04/2024 08:50

Bollocks. I'm a man and I love afternoon teas!

Yes, they're expensive, but so is everything that's 'bigged-up' - like those extortionate pots of ice cream at the theatre.

I love them, and try to go every month or two with my wife. It's a nice day out where you are made to feel fancy and get cakes. Win-win!

Thanks. I was being a bit thick there! 😂

Dh had a money off voucher for one in a hotel in central London ( not anywhere that posh , but it seemed a nice hotel ) many years ago now.
He put a photo on Facebook of the food on those fancy tea plates and I had comments such as ' you really going to eat all that !' Made me feel a complete pig ( it was for three people as well )
The tea was nice in big old teapots, but the cakes were so so. We didn't pay full price so that helped. Probably a lot more money these days.

Afternoon tea at Fortnum is pretty good. And not just for ladies. The last time I had it we were three couples - and soon after one couple split: she went to live with another woman.

There’s a lesson - afternoon tea can turn you into a lesbian! lol 😂. yes, I am joking. No I am not homophobic - in case anyone is about to write a shocked and indignant reply 🤣

It's not great value, but gender has nothing to do with it

Paintballing is a rip off largely aimed at ripping men off

Somebody suggested this to me and I’ve never thought of it that way.

You don’t get very women going for paintballing do you? The mark up on ammunition is absolutely enormous aside from clean-up and cost of the grounds and stuff- it must be money for old rope for the businesses concerned. Specially the ones that charge over 50 quid ahead.

Are we being conned by the whole paintballing debacle?

(yes inflicting pain on the jerk at the office is nice I get that)

Sex is biological (male/female). Gender is identity (man/woman/non-binary). So presume they meant gender.

I don't care enough to argue any further, don't waste your popcorn. Just saw it and thought I'd give the info.

Posters keep going on about it not being "great value" yet as others have pointed out a supermarket sandwich is £5. If I have a sandwich, a piece of cake and a coffee as a takeaway away lunch that's going to be at least a tenner.

MinnieMountain · 09/04/2024 10:51

Reading some of these posts makes me realise why my local “pick your own” afternoon tea is so popular. You can choose an entirely savoury tea.

But we are silly giggly women who cant possibly have the brains to know whether something is good value or not...

FootieMama · 09/04/2024 11:45

I've been invite to go with friends a few times. I said no thanks as I am not prepared to pay £70 for tea and cake. I have a strong suspicion that they only go for the instagramable places. But I don't think is set up to rip off women. It'd hardly something that women have to do.

RosaRoja · 09/04/2024 12:08

What do you do with the box of leftovers? Do you carry it around with you in town afterwards? Are the sandwiches as nice at home when you don’t have the same decor and so on?

BettyBoops · 09/04/2024 12:15

The afternoon tea in my local little seaside cafe is amazing, £17pp a variety of sandwiches savoury nibbles chips and lots of delicious hombaked cakes as well as unlimited tea / coffee (I'm not the prosecco type anyway)
We never get through it all so always take a box full of cakes home with us.
Have been to a few 'posher' ones but this is hands down my favourite (and a bargain!)

fitzwilliamdarcy · 09/04/2024 12:50

I am jealous of everyone who's had a quiet afternoon tea with a nice atmosphere. The only two I've ever been to cost £60 per head and one featured a screaming baby that wasn't removed, and the other two 5 or 6 year olds who were being encouraged to do repeating circles around the dining room to "stare look at what everyone else is eating".

I wondered that, they must get bashed about. My husband wouldn't mind though

Well it's unlikely you would take the sandwiches home. As for the cakes there's no more difficulty in carrying them home than cakes in a box bought direct from a patisserie (although no doubt buying cakes from a patisserie is also something that only silly women do)

Blondiebeachbabe · 09/04/2024 13:03

You cant eat it all though. I mean, when did anyone eat a round of sandwiches for lunch, followed by a cream tea and then at least FOUR cakes? It's only worth it if you can take home what you didn't eat, and that only works if you're going home straight afterwards. No one wants to carry a box of cakes around on a pub crawl.

Oh , I don't know when did anyone ever sit down and have say a three course lunch, with a main course and accompanying side dishes and a pudding? That's more food by far than an afternoon tea.

No one wants to carry a box of cakes around on a pub crawl.

Eh? Why assume they'd be on a pub crawl?

Um I pretty much always manage mine! My mum always takes a couple of her little cakes home but the rest of us normal finish it.
We are certainly not on a pub crawl though!
