Afternoon tea is a rip off largely aimed at ripping women off

Somebody suggested this to me and I’ve never thought of it that way.

You don’t get very men going for afternoon tea do you? The Mark up on afternoon tea is absolutely enormous aside from staffing and cost of the building and stuff- it must be money for old rope for the businesses concerned. Specially the ones that charge over 50 quid ahead.

Are we being conned by the whole afternoon tea debacle?

(yes cake is nice I get that)

I have an afternoon tea voucher to use .
Also a tasting menu voucher which looks like it will cause indigestion with all its complex bits.

SusieLawson · 08/04/2024 14:22

I loved my afternoon tea at Lucknam Park in Wiltshire so much that I took a photo of it. The room was so beautiful, but my photo didn't show it all off.

@Silvers11 you must be talking about the Dome in Edinburgh. Yes it's lovely.

RosaRoja · 08/04/2024 14:24

The tasting menu is another rip off, targeted equally to both sexes, maybe more towards men. The portions are minuscule (“tasting”), though the presentation is impressive.

It is easy to spend about £15 a head in McDonalds

But that must have bought 2 large burger meals and extra sides/dessert as well. That is not a normal amount of food for one person.

I went to McDonalds a couple of weeks ago and had a meal, it was under £6 and that was at a service station so probably more expensive than average.

I can get a Big Mac for free with my points on the app. I sometimes like to get a take away and sit in my car on Hackpen Hill. Can see for miles from there. When there were the lockdowns, I'd stop in my car there from the supermarket. Not many restaurants have a view like that.

If you keep the McDonalds receipt, there's a code on it where you do a survey online, and then you get a code for Big Mac or alternative for £1.99. They have only given me that receipt if I've picked up from the counter though, and sometimes I've had to ask for it.

They were underwhelmed as F&M afternoon tea is no good. There’s an art to it which F&M lack. Just go and buy the teas, don’t stay for the ‘experience’.

Fortnums has been my only disappointing afternoon tea. I would never go again.

Well I see your point, but honestly the price of the actual team must be like £4

I think you really need to look at how expensive good bread, fillings and cakes/scones (as a start) or how long they take to make. Not to mention Prosecco/champagne, staff costs, good china, building overheads…£4!!!!

CantDealwithChristmas · 08/04/2024 15:35

I think it's good for those of us who are teetotal. If us teetolarers want a girly afternoon that makes us feel a bit special and in nice surroundings then we can go for an afternoon tea and spend a couple of hours there, probably works out cheaper than spending a couple of hours in a bar and less loud and smelly

Allfur · 08/04/2024 15:36

I've never spent any where near £15 in macdonalds

billyt · 08/04/2024 15:58

I used to enjoy going for Afternoon tea with my wife.

The Swan next to the Globe Theatre does a great savoury afternoon tea (called a Gentleman's Tea ) -

Welsh rarebit, cheese scones, sausage rolls. Last time I also had mini fish and chips. Was brilliant while viewing out over the Thames.

They also do vegetarian, vegan, non-gluten, nut free so something for most.

Our local garden centre does a great Afternoon Tea with their own bread and cakes. Another winner.

fungipie · 08/04/2024 16:03

Afternoon tea, bags, shoes, fancy restaurants, face creams, and so much more. They are only a rip off if you choose to buy them.

If we stopped agreeing to being ripped off... it would stop. Perhaps!?!

Imagine if you went in your best soSandar get up and there was some really really hot men having afternoon tea. They wouldn’t be straight would they?

Gay men have better taste

Alaimo · 08/04/2024 16:15

Love afternoon tea. The two places I tend to visit both charge £25, which I think is excellent value for a nice selection of home-made goods.

NewName24 · 08/04/2024 16:15

Afternoon Tea was £15 per head at the last place I went for afternoon tea.
Choice of fillings in our freshly made sandwiches, unlimited tea (or coffee if you preferred), 2 scones each (with jam and clotted cream - and she brought us some more clotted cream when asked), 3 very tasty cakes each (which we had to take home as we were full after the sandwiches and scones). Delicious. Would have been excellent value for money (although I didn't pay).
I didn't feel ripped off at all and nor did dh, who, despite being a man, also enjoys an afternoon tea.

Excessively ridiculously expensive rip off prices- I am quite sure you understood what I meant.

Not just that. My husband is teetotal. He is a big fan of The Dome, Edinburgh afternoon tea. The last time we were there was a Sunday afternoon with our adult son, one of my husband's nieces, one of his nephews and nephew's wife and their toddler.

Out of that group one is completely teetotal, one, my son, might as well be for how little he drinks, one wasn't drinking because she was breastfeeding and one was a toddler. The Dome was a perfect venue.

Women being frivolous apparently

Despite many posts on the thread about mens buying habbits apparently women are the only silly giggly little airheads being ripped off because they aren't intelligent enough to work it out

cremebrulait · 08/04/2024 17:49

I had Afternoon Tea once. A man bought me a gift certificate for my birthday.

I've never purchased it. Loved it. Love the concept.

EmpressoftheMundane · 08/04/2024 17:50

Depends where you go and what you order. A fancy hotel in London has huge overheads, and that is what you are paying for. Not the finger sandwiches.

Well the OP asks whether we are 'being conned'?

If people agree to pay ridiculous prices for such 'luxury' goods or services - then they will continue to be 'conned'.

I buy good quality stuff, butas I don't like being 'conned'- I don't buy luxury products where you pay for the brand, for instance, and not necessarily quality. If that is 'being a misery' - so be it.

Indeed. Silly women with their girly afteroons out. Imagine us spending money as we choose.
I've even bought a handbag!

Agree

afternoon tea is bullshit
