Would you be put off? Man uses a lot of slang

It's not a dialect thing, I know people can't help the way they speak. It's a man who's in his 30s but uses a lot of slang like 'innit' as if he's a 17 year old boy.
Or 'alright lad what's happening ', stuff like that.
Not sure if I'm being overly judgemental?

So basically they were bullying him over something completely harmless.

If I'd been supervising the group I'd have told them to grow up and accept other people's speech patterns.

I left them to it. They probably did him a favour in the long term.

The OP isn't talking about regional dialects and local words, she's talking about downright appalling English from someone who should know better.

London/Estuary slang is a regional dialect with local words. 'Innit' at the end of the sentence is dialect.

Amazing how people think dialect and local words are acceptable, even charming, when they're used by some people, and 'downright appalling English' when they're used by others. People will wax lyrical about quaint regional terms they hear from, eg, an elderly farmer in the Yorkshire Dales, but clutch their pearls the moment they hear a 20-something working class Londoner say 'innit'.

NCForQuestions · 08/04/2024 14:25

Nothing more irritating than "roadman" speak. Every other word is filler - innit, fam, bruv, yeah booooyyy, sick, like, craaaazzzzy etc.

Especially when you hear them with their mums and they revert to perfectly normal language use and accents.

EnglishBluebell · 08/04/2024 14:27

I cannot stand^^ slang terms. It's so unbelievably cringey 😬
Any bloke who said "I feel like..." when he really means "I think..." or "...at this point" after everything would get told to get lost!

Datgal · 08/04/2024 14:30

Don't think innit is just cockney either Loads say it around here (Manchester border). More so in town (Manchester 😁)

BeachBeerBbq · 08/04/2024 14:42

I use innit, mate, lads, boss, a'right, and so on in non formal settings.
Degree educated trilingual...

For me it's not slang what makes people sound uneducated and like the sort I don't want to be around. It's their intolerant undeducated opinions.

Wouldn't bother me.

You like your men to talk like a drug dealer 😎

EnglishBluebell · 08/04/2024 19:48

@NeverDropYourMooncup That's not intelligent though that's just reeling off a load of info from a text book with a few innits' added in for extra gangsta and arseholery

louderthan · 08/04/2024 21:59

I've got a stupid posh voice (I don't know why, I'm not really posh at all!) and I say innit, mate and babes. It's just how I talk and have done for ages. If it annoys snobs so much the better.

It's talking about things I have knowledge about in conversation with others whilst using the accent and dialect I spoke in from infancy. I'm essentially not masking my origins to protect their schema about how people who know of O, Magnum Mysterium should present.

I can also solve issues with their dishwasher not draining or give them details of how the benefits system works with regard to disability, spot errors in cloudflare markup or VBA, talk about Monstera variegation and avoiding damping off or root rot.

I'm bolloxed if they start on assorted longhaul holiday destinations, the best EV to purchase or the highest returns on ISAs (which would completely validate their existing prejudices) - but if the conversation is based around things that I do have knowledge of, then I don't see any benefit in hamstringing myself verbally to keep them in their comfort zone where anybody who doesn't sound exactly like them is some sort of uneducated Barbarian (even if the word does actually mean a person with different speech and customs, so wouldn't be that far off the mark, actually).

Enlighten us because we have no idea how drug dealers speak

CaterhamReconstituted · 09/04/2024 08:19

If he’s putting it on for effect then that’s strange and unattractive. If that’s the way he speaks because of where he comes from then your problem with it is snobbery.

Branleuse · 09/04/2024 08:19

I think it might always be something that bothers you. It sounds like speaking properly is important to you. In which case, you choose a partner that doesn't talk in slang.

Then how do you know how they speak .....the ones you know must be at the bottom if they speak like that 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Ravenclawhouse · 09/04/2024 08:42

My husband calls other guys "boss" when he first meets them. Always makes me giggle Smile

Pieceofpurplesky · 07/04/2024 16:04

People don't all speak the King's English! 'Alright mon' is a term of address here and it is totally normal. Personally I dislike glottal stops but it's regional and none of my business how someone speaks

Sure, but you don’t have to find it attractive. I wouldn’t be in a relationship with someone who used textspeak or didn’t spell and punctuate text messages properly. Other people will be fine with that.

Haha yeah. Sounds suspicious 🤔 They'll buy drugs off them but doesn't approve of their accent.😁
