Is it ever OK to report anyone?

Following on from the TV licence thread is it ever OK to report for benefit fraud, car tax, TV licence, etc or does it always come back and bit you on the bum?

Would you be scared to do it?

No, I do not think it is OK. But I stated my reasons for not reporting. That unless I knew intricate details of someone's finances, I could not be 100% sure that fraud was being committed, and I would never report something like that unless I knew 100% that it was happening.

And many of us have said we know for sure but you've dismissed that. 🙃

No Snitches get stitches. Really how would doing so improve your life? If it's just a case in of having a moral high ground don't bother

You can literally 100% know if they haven’t paid their car tax

How? Unless you go snooping online to see if car was taxed? And why is your life so sad that you have nothing better to do?

Do you not realize that if a car is not taxed then anpr cameras will soon pick it up anyway

Youdontevengohere · 07/04/2024 19:02

I very nearly reported a friend’s partner for serious tax evasion (100% sure it was happening as he told me 😏) which is still ongoing. I couldn’t bring myself to do it in the end though.

Because I find it hard to believe that anyone could know for sure. Unless you have seen their bank accounts. And sorry, but I do not believe that so many people would go around telling all and sundry that they were committing fraud.

MumblesParty · 07/04/2024 15:11

@Garlicked how did she make you homeless?

Well if housing benefit had stopped while they were investigating then probably due to rent arrears

Well I’m telling you that my friend’s partner told me, and others. My friend also confirmed it, as she was stressed about it. So I guess you think I’m lying 🤷🏻‍♀️. Anyway I chose not to report him. But I was tempted.

Yes, I never actually hear of this happening in real life, only on an anonymous internet forum. And I live in a housing association flat surrounded by benefit claimants!

BobnLen · 07/04/2024 19:14

I would report car offences if it was stuck outside or near my house, the other things are unlikely to affect me and I wouldn't be sure about them anyway so no.

Well I am a person in real life, and it happened. But convincing Beezknees that something I know to have happened actually happened isn’t top of my list of priorities in life so I’ll leave it there.
(It was tax fraud, not benefit fraud).

Whatifthehokeycokey · 07/04/2024 19:26

I would report an uninsured driver and certainly someone driving without a license.

Whatifthehokeycokey · 07/04/2024 19:28

O, and a DUI. They could kill someone.

Who needs enemies when your friends would be willing to report your partner like this 😬

I didn’t report him. I was tempted. He is an abusive arsehole.

sprigatito · 07/04/2024 19:54

I would report cruelty or neglect, or anything else causing direct harm. I would not report theft, fraud, benefit-fiddling or any other financial crime. Because a) it's none of my business, and b) we live in a corrupt kleptocracy where we are all being defrauded and robbed on an industrial scale, so I don't judge others for finding ways to mitigate it 🤷🏻‍♀️

taxguru · 07/04/2024 19:57

Yep, I've reported several people for various things.

It really annoys me that I play by the rules, follow laws, etc., yet so many other people not only flout laws but boast about it.

Checking tax online isn’t “snooping” it’s publicly available information 🤣 and it’s a bit odd to call people who use this system ‘sad’. Would you not check before buying a car?
And card that aren’t driven around still need to be taxed or SORNed. HTH.

Don’t evade tax and no one can report you.

Im amazed this doesn’t make people more angry. You’re literally out of pocket because of these people. Yes, you.

YaMuvva · 07/04/2024 20:34

I also think someone who doesn’t Tax their car is likely to not MOT their car, meaning innocent people are in danger with a potentially dangerous car on the road.

That kind of low level scummy behaviour usually goes hand in hand with people who think it’s fine to drink Drive or drive dangerously too.

I may be ‘sad’ to some for being annoyed about this but at least I’m not a scumbag or scumbag apologist.

“Snitches get stitches” is the scumbag charter. And the pathetic little cowards charter.

Does it count for everything? Child abuse? Domestic violence?

I watch Little Boy Blue today about the murder of Rhys Jones and the many people who tried tried to cover up who the murderer was because the worst thing to be is a ‘grass’. That family, broken by grief of their 11yo son being shot as he walked home from playing footie with his mates, nearly didn’t get justice for their son because of the cunts and their ‘snitches get stitches attitude’. That’s really what you endorse @Samlewis96?

It doesn't make a blind bit of difference if a car is taxed if you are thinking of buying it as you have to tax it yourself as soon as purchased. You can no longer keep the previous tAx so what's the point in checking

And for people to report others for no tax they would be looking online without any intent on buying the car. I know it's public information but I don't know why anyone would be looking

And seeing as I've been driving 34 years I am well aware cars need to be either taxed or sorted.

Never heard of Rhys Jones. And there's a big difference between someone commiting murder or child abuse ( which I've never known anyone who has) and not taxing car or buying TV licence

If a car is already taxed you absolutely don’t have to tax it yourself when you purchase it. To claim it’s ‘sad’ to even check is very odd. It’s the same system to check for an MOT too. Hardly ‘snooping’ 😂

You will have heard of him, it was huge news about 16 years ago.

It’s the same attitude though of ‘snitches get stitches’, which is the SAME attitude that leads to shaming over ‘grassing’.

I’ll ask again - what WOULD you report and who will be giving you ‘stitches’

Crumpleton · 07/04/2024 20:49

Basically committing any kind of fraud is stealing, no matter whether it's from the BBC, benefit fraud, Joe Public, copyright or a supermarket, it's theft.

I'm assuming if any of those posting saying that they'd turn a blind eye as it's not their business/doesn't affect them/snitches get stitches would also afford the same if they had a break in at home/car stolen and their neighbours took the same stance and despite seeing it unfold still did nothing.
