Was the waitress rude?

This morning at my gym I went to the restaurant to order breakfast. I ordered an omelette with spinach and cheese, I dieting so I asked for the cheese on the side so I can add the amount I wanted to the omelette rather than not know how much is in there. The waitress then chuckled to herself at my request of cheese on the side.

I was then asked if I'd like regular chips or sweet potato fries with it, I asked if I could have toast instead please? She laughed again and said to her colleague "oh the chef is going to love this order eyeroll can you make sure he knows please"

AIBU to think she was rude? If you rrally must mock my order please do it after I've paid and left the bar and can't hear 🫠

Not so much rude as unprofessional, I think.

askingaquestionaboutthis · 06/04/2024 11:25

Both rude AND unprofessional

KreedKafer · 06/04/2024 11:26

Yes, she was unprofessional at best and rude at worst

darkchocolatecoffee · 06/04/2024 11:27

Very rude! toast is a easy substitution and cheese on the side would be easy to do I would have thought!

WarshipRocinante · 06/04/2024 11:29

They serve chips with breakfast? Surely most people say no and change to toys or no carbs at all. Yeah, she was rude.

2dogsandabudgie · 06/04/2024 11:29

When she said about the chef loving this order I would have said "why's that then" and called her out on it at the time.

RoderickHosclassicblackhoodie · 06/04/2024 11:29

That's really poor service.

In a similar vein, I once had a masseuse complain to me about how much she hated doing full-body massage... while giving me a full-body massage. She lost a customer, obvs.

HundredMilesAnHour · 06/04/2024 11:29

I don't think she was rude. I think you were being a pain in the neck and she was going to get a lot of earache from the chef. Is there a reason why you can't actually order what's on the actual menu?

Totreeornottotree · 06/04/2024 11:30

I'm glad to hear I'm not just being sensitive. Yes I thought it was a simple enough swap, especially at breakfast time

I wonder if they buy their omelettes in ready made so can't make changes to them. Not that this would excuse her rudeness.

Chips at breakfast is madness.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 06/04/2024 11:31

As ex waiting staff, yes, rude. She can think what she likes about people who order off menu but it’s up to the chef if he wants to do it or not.

Totreeornottotree · 06/04/2024 11:32

@HundredMilesAnHour I did mention in the first post that I'm dieting and want to be able to eat a sensible portion of certain things

Is it just me intrigued by a gym cafe that offers chips as the only side dish with their omelettes?

YaMuvva · 06/04/2024 11:33

Very rude.

But this is MN and some people think having a low paid job entitled the staff member to behave like a rude shit and customers shouldn’t say anything so I suspect you’ll be told YABU.

I also have no time for chefs who strop about doing something slightly different. Like get over it you weirdo.

Personally I think the standard of service with waiting staff has plummeted in the last few years. In a gym cafe when it’s clear the customer is Trying to eat healthily, being insolent and huffy is completely unacceptable and certainly when I’ve been in the stages of trying to lose weight comments like this are absolutely crushing for self esteem

My mum was a chef. This type of change is barely noticed. It’s no problem at all. Cheese is already grated. No extra work. Pop it in a little dish on the plate instead of into the pan when cooking. It is no problem at all. Neither is order toast.

A pain in the neck because a chef has to put toast on a plate rather than chips?

OK then

It's not being "a pain in the neck" to request small changes- she didn't ask for ostrich eggs or anything unreasonable...
As for the reasons, they're included.

Totreeornottotree · 06/04/2024 11:37

@frenchfancy81 an ostrich egg 🤣

And back in the real world most people aren't as highly strung as this

WaltzingWaters · 06/04/2024 11:48

She was rude and unprofessional. It’s a simple enough change.
Also find it odd that a gym cafe includes chips with an omelette, rather than it being an extra add on for those that want it. Surely the majority of people there want something relatively healthy.

Don’t be ridiculous it was a perfectly normal request, the chef would be totally used to such a simple ask it’s not complicated.

Sharptonguedwoman · 06/04/2024 11:52

It is all a bit when Harry met Sally. I don't think either of you come out well. Order a plain omelette and toast? Yes, the waitress was a bit tetchy.

How has the OP not come out well? For making very minor adjustments to an order?

chattyness · 06/04/2024 12:23

Yes she was a wee bit rude, she can think it, but shouldn't ever say it to the customer. Having said that I know what it's like when you take an order into the chefs and they start raging at you because it's off menu & not as they want to serve the dish they created so they've got to think a bit more. The waiting staff get it in the neck from both sides all day every day & that can be very stressful. It's easy enough if she's writing the ticket but if you've got one those electronic ordering systems, it's more difficult to add those extra requests and having to speak to some angry chefs is intimidating, she may have even been chuckling to herself with nerves about it as a lot of people do that too.

What? How does she not come out well?

This really isn’t an issue. The way she ordered was totally normal.
