To discharge myself from hospital?

I’m desperate.

Admitted on Monday with ?appedicitis. Then told I had a UTI; possibly kidney infection. Then ended up catheterised. Then told my sats are too low (92-95) and that I’ve got a chest infection. Told I need a CT scan and a chest x Ray. A doctor came round at 4pm and told me I’d be given a nebuliser tonight and possibly oxygen. I can’t lie flat as I can’t breathe without wheezing, coughing to the point of vomiting.

Come night shift - nurses said they have zero record of that conversation and there’s nothing they can do. I haven’t slept more than four hours since Sunday. I haven’t got any water, I’m being left with a full catheter bag for 12-14 hours at a time. I’ve no idea what’s wrong and if I have got an infection it isn’t being treated. I’m so tired I’m hallucinating.

I’ve just asked the band 2 nurses for help and got snapped at. They’re sitting discussing Chinese takeaways.

I don’t know what to do. I live only a mile away. I keep thinking of packing up and going. I can buy a syringe from boots to take the catheter out. I don’t know what to do, I’m scared and desperate.

@toldyouiwasill in today's hospital climate, if they want to keep you in, you need to stay. They would be chucking you out as quickly as possible if you were well enough. It sounds like you're still quite poorly.

toldyouiwasill · 08/04/2024 18:28

It’s pelvic inflammatory disease that got systemic, with a UTI and a chest infection. They said I’ve been fairly ill and probably 2-3 weeks recovery time. Will need my coil removing tomorrow or next few days; they’re away to call gynaecology. All being well get home tomorrow at some point on oral antibiotics and pain relief. said they could see it on the scans.

Glad they've at least worked out what's going on. Hope you can be discharged soon and get some good R&R at home. Flowers

angelopal · 08/04/2024 20:10

Keep on top the antibiotics when you get home and ask for contact details if you think there are still issues.

Have this and had 3 days of IV antibiotics followed by 11 days of oral. Still in pain and have landed back up in hospital as infection back. Looking at surgery to try and fix.

MaverickSnoopy · 09/04/2024 07:32

I'm glad you've got a diagnosis finally. I had pelvic inflammatory disease caused by my coil. Word of warning, the antibiotics knocked me for 6 and gave me gastritis (bit like a stomach ulcer) that lasted for 2 years. Ask whether you can take ppis or gaviscon double action alongside (you should be depending on medication for your other issues).

Lougle · 09/04/2024 07:42

Oh you have been through the mill. Don't underestimate the stress your body has been under. Being discharged from hospital doesn't mean you're better. It just means you're not so unwell that you need 24/7 care.

paisley256 · 09/04/2024 21:40

Hi op how are you today/tonight?

toldyouiwasill · 10/04/2024 07:56

got home about 12 noon yesterday, uni support worker insisted on taking me home and she spoke with my accommodation (student flats) to let them know what had happened so they could help. They actually did my washing for me, and told me to order a McDonald’s - did. Mostly just slept and slept since.

Dischare drugs include a bottle of morphine which has worried me as I don’t know if I want to take that on my own but I’ll see, also given dihydrocodeine to take.

Coil away to get removed in an hour at sexual health clinic. Told to take meds before so I’m a bit sleepy and they’ll see how it goes.

A bit wheezy last night and woke up this morning coughing to gagging but OK now. Just a bit weird, I don’t fully remember all of last week - things only make proper sense from Saturday really.

It's great you're home and they know what was wrong. I hope the IUD removal goes smoothly for you.

Andthereyougo · 10/04/2024 10:07

I’ve just read all your posts. Horrified at the appalling behaviour you received ( can’t call it treatment) I totally understand your anxiety after previous assault, please complain to PALS though I’ve found them to be useless. I can pm you details of an excellent medical negligence lawyer if you want.

And one nebuliser? One? How was it sterilised between users? All MPs should be made to work a weeks hospital shifts so they can see what it’s like.

Best wishes for a good recovery and every success with your exams. 💐

Nebulisers are sterilised between users with alcohol wipes.

paisley256 · 10/04/2024 16:02

Glad you got home safely, there's nothing like being back in your own bed after hospital. I hope your coil removal went ok too.

Morphine works best in conjunction with paracetamol, maybe keep it for worst pain scenarios. it can cause constipation so I always keep laxatives handy and drinks loads of water

Now you're home you probably want to detach from the whole experience, but I'd still persue a complaint with Pals as they need to be held to account for their shockingly bad attitudes and behaviours towards you.

All the best with your recovery 💐

Coil got taken out yesterday, and saw GP.

Coil was easy enough, big cough and short sharp pain and over. Nurse was asking if I needed condoms and I did make her laugh as I said I really don’t fancy having sex right now 😂, not after all this hassle.

GP’s given me 5x40mg of prednisolone and a blue inhaler for four times a day, and told to try and sit upright/force a big cough regularly. Said hospital should have done that last week and should have been on O2 during stay. Said trouble is because of psych history there’s a risk they’ll put everything down to mental health but ‘having seen you very anxious this is different.’

Still slightly wheezy but nothing as bad as before. Just shattered, I’m managing to do little bits then back to sleep. I’ve got some shopping in, just chicken, fish, fruit and veg, soup and bread.

On a promise with family - no biscuits, cakes, sweets, crisps, meal deals, sugary drinks or ready meals. Agreed I’ll try to stick to that for six weeks, we think if I can go cold turkey for six weeks it’ll break the habit.

And yes I’m going to write a complaint. Mostly because I should never ever have been left in that level of distress. I ended up hurting myself that night and that should never have to happen on a hospital ward.

paisley256 · 11/04/2024 11:11

Glad your coil removal was ok. It sounds like lots of rest and sleep is what you need right now. I hope your complaint is taken seriously and that you never have to go through anything like this again. Best of luck 💐

Two or three days at home now, feeling a bit better each day although the steroids are making me a bit stroppy/anxious.

I’ve asked for an extension on my uni work, and wheezing/SOB has virtually stopped unless I’m very tired. Inhaler and steroids definitely helping with that.

I’ve managed to eat the bare minimum in terms of snacks and things I enjoy. I had one kinder bueno tonight. Everything else I’ve eaten is fruit, veg, chicken and a couple of potato waffles and fish fingers tonight (because I was beyond exhausted). I’ve never felt so desperate for a chip supper or a bar of chocolate but then I remember what it felt like to not be able to breathe and I’m determined that’s never happening again.

Someone said to me yesterday why don’t you get a nice takeaway, like a proper curry or Thai. Might do that. I dunno.

OP posts:
RafaistheKingofClay · 12/04/2024 22:23

I’m with you on the fish fingers and potato waffles. The odd take away will be fine. Better than eating nothing because you are too exhausted to cook.

The prednisolone will do that to you but should disappear when you’ve finished the 5 days.

Princesspollyyy · 13/04/2024 11:24

I would try and stay off a takeaway. They really aren't good for you at all and are laden with calories.

Princesspollyyy · 13/04/2024 11:25

If you're too exhausted to cook, try soup with a lovely Wholemeal roll.

Good idea. The fresh soups in the shops are very nice as I don't you're up to making home made!

I’ve lost!! Stood on scales tonight and they’re saying 5lb off however that’s late at night. Going to recheck in the morning.

I’ve managed to resist today - sweets, dessert, a Frappuccino, a milkshake, a burger, mayo, chips, sugary juice, and a sausage roll. (Those are all things I wanted, desperately wanted but managed to say no).

Travelled up to see family - stopped in Greggs before getting train, and then went out to F&B’s for tea with cousin, and then she wanted to go to Costa … I let myself have a chicken sandwich on the train and a muffin, and a bottle of water. Tea at F&Bs was salad, with one chicken fillet and about 5 chips.

I am beaming, I’m so chuffed with myself for getting started.
