To discharge myself from hospital?

I’m desperate.

Admitted on Monday with ?appedicitis. Then told I had a UTI; possibly kidney infection. Then ended up catheterised. Then told my sats are too low (92-95) and that I’ve got a chest infection. Told I need a CT scan and a chest x Ray. A doctor came round at 4pm and told me I’d be given a nebuliser tonight and possibly oxygen. I can’t lie flat as I can’t breathe without wheezing, coughing to the point of vomiting.

Come night shift - nurses said they have zero record of that conversation and there’s nothing they can do. I haven’t slept more than four hours since Sunday. I haven’t got any water, I’m being left with a full catheter bag for 12-14 hours at a time. I’ve no idea what’s wrong and if I have got an infection it isn’t being treated. I’m so tired I’m hallucinating.

I’ve just asked the band 2 nurses for help and got snapped at. They’re sitting discussing Chinese takeaways.

I don’t know what to do. I live only a mile away. I keep thinking of packing up and going. I can buy a syringe from boots to take the catheter out. I don’t know what to do, I’m scared and desperate.

The day nurses told me to hang onto my nebuliser and show it tonight, have done so fingers crossed. Back to wheezing/tight again. Don’t know why it only happens at bedtime.

Glad you’re feeling a little bit more positive today OP. However, please don’t let this go. I would still escalate this to PALS, your treatment has been appalling and people need to be held accountable.

Craftier · 05/04/2024 21:24

Fingers crossed for a better night for you tonight op.

toldyouiwasill · 05/04/2024 22:15

Thanks. They’ve only one nebuliser machine so lady next to me gets first, then me. Hopefully sleep after. I’m so so tired tonight.

They only have one nebuliser? That's shocking

For goodness sake! Where on earth have you landed yourself, one nebuliser for ? a whole ward? No wonder you're so tired, the work of breathing will be exhausting you. Here's hoping you get some rest.

slore · 06/04/2024 03:45

Thanks for updating us, I hope you get a good night and a go on the nebuliser.

They have O2 points although she said they can’t find the actual O2 fittings that allow you to get oxygen from the hole in the wall - but in the end I crashed out before she could set it up, and I’m only just awake again.

But yes she said in terms of the actual machine they’ve only one, and next to me has COPD so gets it first. Support worker did say yesterday she thought I should be in medical block, not surgical - everyone else has stomas or pancreatic diseases. Glad she came up, she was able to get a full story about why I’m being kept in which I hadn’t fully understood. Good thing she used to work here.

It’s a huge hospital in a huge city however it’s a bit neglected, mid 60s-70s build and heavy needs upgrading. It’s east end so a lot of v poor communities. Money went into other huge hospital ten years ago.

Support worker also said women’s bays remind her of prison dynamics but that’s another story though tbh she’s not far wrong in some ways 😂

What a shit show. I hope you've managed to get some sleep.

toldyouiwasill · 06/04/2024 06:37

I have, to be honest that’s the most I’ve slept continuous in over a week; flat out. Plus even better I was able to lie down properly, bed on a 30 degree tilt rather than bolt upright. Still coughing but not half as bad.

Do you have access to water today op?

Yes, got a jug before bed. They’re just away to do breakfast as well so will get tea etc. Uni got me a load of juice etc too. So have got plenty to drink now thank God.

Are they not monitoring your fluid intake and output?

toldyouiwasill · 06/04/2024 08:58

They’ve just said CRP is 57, wbc is 616 or something. Haven’t got pneumonia but I’m on regular nebs, sats monitoring and if gets worse they’ll give me steroids. Also starting coamoxiclav. Probably made the right choice keeping me in, I feel rotten

I think they are yeah

So what do they do if they have a patient that needs to be on oxygen?

How did you end up at this hospital OP? By ambulance? If you took yourself to A&E, perhaps make a mental note to attend the other hospital that's had the money pumped into it next time. Although hopefully there will not be a next time.

It's atrocious that you are sharing a nebuliser machine with another patient, and essentially you did not get your nebuliser last night.. it's prescribed to you and you should be getting it.

Great that you finally have water in your water jug. It sounds like you have a nasty infection, hopefully you'll start to feel better once the coamoxiclav works. Is that being given via IV or orally do you know?

It’s just oral antibiotics they said.

It was via OOH GP, I went to see them the other night and they told
me I needed to be admitted and rang the ward for me. You’re told where to go based on where you live and what’s wrong I think.

I’m absolutely drained.

The day staff today magically found a working oxygen port this morning and stuck me on a neb as was panicking/hyperventilating. That helped a bit. It’s so scary the not being able to breathe feeling.

OP posts:
Princesspollyyy · 06/04/2024 14:17

@toldyouiwasill

Being on oxygen and being on a nebuliser are two different things, if you're on oxygen, that's the one plugged into the wall, if you're in a neb then you are plugged into the noisy machine.

If your sats are low then they may put you on 1-2 litres of oxygen via nasal specs?

I'm not surprised you're drained, I really hope you will start to feel better soon x

toldyouiwasill · 06/04/2024 20:17

It’s a wee attachment they plug into the wall, put O2 onto 8 litres and then pour saline into? Next door still has the actual machine. It’s got a green facemask. They said I can use it 4 times a day or so.

toldyouiwasill · 06/04/2024 22:25

Yeah, SATS shot up to 97 earlier. Admittedly so did my temperature but you can’t win them all. Roommate told me if I am serious about getting better to hand over all the sweets I’ve been bought by others (piles of them) and give to the nurses for their tea break. I’m v v overweight which they’ve told me has probably caused this to have gotten far, far worse than it needed to be.

Still using saline nebuliser every 3-4 hours or so, and sometimes using it just for O2 for a bit but find if I keep it on too long I get dizzy so nurses said limit only to when I am really ‘barking’/hacking.

I’d tell your roommate to mind her own business OP!! A very inappropriate and rude comment

If the roommate is serious about getting better she should probably stop giving out unsolicited advice. 😆

How are you OP? X

toldyouiwasill · 08/04/2024 09:40

Just tired. Slept a lot last 24 hours. Staying all day today they think and possibly tonight too. Not allowed home as bloods are still too abnormal and they aren’t convinced it isn’t grumbling appendicitis.
