Is this too much for little ones?

Flying from Gatwick to Amsterdam
Staying 2 nights in Amsterdam
Then train to Efteling (1 hour plus short bus ride)
Stay in Efteling Hotel for 2 nights then back up on the train to Amsterdam, bit more of a look round then fly home.

Is it too much travelling and not enough time in one place? 2 adults and 2 children ages 2 and 7.

Please help, I am posting for traffic and just getting stuck but need to book soon.

Too much I think - which would probably mean you would not enjoy yourselves either!

I’d say too much, but you know your kids.

PuttingDownRoots · 04/04/2024 22:01

Sounds fine to me!

Zippedydoodahday · 04/04/2024 22:03

Depends on your kids. Mine is a frequent flier and is very used to public transport so would be fine.

PrincessTeaSet · 04/04/2024 22:06

It depends - will the 2 year old be able to sleep at night or have their usual naps and if not will that affect anyone else's sleep?

The itinerary sounds fine in general, but my 2 year old would be likely to not sleep at night, keeping me awake, or wake very early, or get hideously overtired making it a bit of an ordeal.

Needanewname42 · 04/04/2024 22:08

Fine for 7yo, maybe a bit unsettling for the 2yo.
Actually I think you might be better putting it off a couple of years until you are well beyond the toddler stage. And not needing to cart buggies, nappies, or use travel cots.

yoshiblue · 04/04/2024 22:08

Too much for me! I'd ideally be wanting to go to Hollland for a week. Base yourself in a self catering house/apartment and then do days trips to Amsterdam/Efteling?

Globules · 04/04/2024 22:09

Mine were fine doing similar, and more 1 nights here and there tbh, at that age.

You're essentially looking at 2 x 45min flights. 2 x 1 hr train journeys.

The determiners here are flight times and if the children are comfortable settling in unknown beds.

DifficultBloodyWoman · 04/04/2024 22:10

I’d say that it would be fine for the kids. Would you be able to cope with it? If so, go for it.

Newuser75 · 04/04/2024 22:10

I think fine too. Mine have travelled around since being young and always been fine. Treat it as an adventure. Take plenty of snacks and they will be grand. Have a lovely time!

LaviniasBigBloomers · 04/04/2024 22:10

I would stay in one place, probably Amsterdam, and take the train into Efleting for one long day trip. There's tonnes to do in Amsterdam for littles.

HolyMilkBoobiesBatman · 04/04/2024 22:10

Fine for the 7 year old, could go either way with the two year old - you might luck out & all the excitement of travelling & new places will keep them going. Alternatively all the travelling & new places might be tiring, overstimulating & unsettling for them leading to a rough few days for all of you.

I would lean towards it being doable actually, as long as you’ve factored in time at a playground/run around time for 2 year old to let off steam.

wineeyeno · 04/04/2024 22:11

Sounds fine to me - but how far are you from Gatwick?

meganorks · 04/04/2024 22:15

Fine for 7 year old. Not sure about 2 year old. All those journeys are quite short. Trains are fun for little ones although usually only for a max of 30 mins.
But what are you doing in between? Because I know my eldest at 2 needed to have a good run around in a park every day. If there is actual adult stuff you want to see and do it is going to be tough I think. Activities all need to be centred around kid friendly stuff.

pinkspeakers · 04/04/2024 22:27

Depends very much on the kids (and you). I'd have thought fine for most 4-7 year olds. Not quite so sure about the 2 year old, but wouldn't rule it out.

I took our 5 and 6 year old to Japan (well, we did, but the flight there was just me as DH was already there for work!). Two weeks, 5 different stops, travelling independently by train. We had a fab time, but I wouldn't have done it when they were 2 and 3!

mygrandchildrenrock · 04/04/2024 22:29

I think you should be fine, especially if your 2 year old will still sleep in a pushchair/buggy.
We went to Efteling in January and had a wonderful time.

40 minutes luckily

To answer some questions they are both very good sleepers, will sleep (and nap for the 2 year old) anywhere luckily and the 2 year old is very laid back. They would require a lot of snacks and some youtube Kids for travelling but I was worried it was too much travelling. Can't extend the trip unfortunately 😕 I was worried a day trip to efteling wouldn't be enough/would be too much for 1 day. The flight time going over to Amsterdam is 8am but we'd stay at Gatwick the night before just incase.

Only thing on the list so far is amsterdam zoo, I'm not sure what else there is to do there for kids yet! Need to research more.

Sounds great to me! We just got back from Efteling today, we had 2 nights/3 days there which I think was just right. It's absolutely brilliant!

My youngest was 2 the first time we went, there's so much for little ones, they can go on a surprising amount of rides, plus there's the Fairytale Forest, the evening shows, 4D cinema, several indoor and outdoor play areas... there's also the swimming pool if you stay in Bosrijk.

Have a great time!

Sounds fine. I did similar when mine were 7, 3 and 1. We had grandparents with us to help though.

The foundling museum in Amsterdam is good for small kids.

A ride on a canal boat? I've got no idea really as when I went (v. long time ago) getting stoned was the only thing on the agenda! But I'm sure, like any major city, there are some great kid friendly activities.

It was supposed to be an adults only trip but due to family illness the kids will be coming too now 😄 hence I am a bit under prepared for kids outings!

Good sleepers.
Good flight times.

You'll be fine. Have a great time.
