Decluttering - do I need a peeler or a whisk?

I’ve recently moved house and am having a major declutter of my kitchen utensils before our new kitchen is installed. I really want a clutter-free space. I have a peeler and a whisk that I’ve never used. Do I really need them or can I throw them away? For context, I use a knife for peeling carrots and potatoes, and have never felt the need to use a whisk. Is it worth keeping them or shall I get rid?

I can't imagine being without either. But if I had to lose one, it would be the whisk. I use my peeler almost every day

Kitkat1523 · 04/04/2024 20:35

Get rid of both

I can't woth this comment. The only scenario I can think of where I wouldn't peel my potatoes wpuld be a jacket potato.

Do you leave the skin on your roast potatoes? Or chips? TBF, I might do skin on chips

but if so, surely you peel for mash?

I use frozen mash pellets because life really is too short for peeling and mashing spuds

no need to take the peel off for anything else!

Bearpawk · 04/04/2024 20:35

If you don't use them then Chuck them!
I on the other hand have 3 different size ballon whisks and a flat sauce whisk and I use my speed peeler a lot including for Julienned carrots in salads and it's great for Parmesan shavings

WhereAreWeNow · 04/04/2024 20:36

Can't imagine being without either but I guess if I could only keep one I'd keep the peeler. I use the peeler everyday but the whisk is more like once a week.

I don’t think I’ve ever peeled a potato. Why would you?!

Mash. Roast potatoes. Easier than scrubbing the dirt off and finding all the eyes in last years' potatoes, no new potatoes yet.

Roast potatoes are the only thing I use a peeler for.

But OP this is all about you, and what you use. Literally zero decluttering experts will say “do you love it, does it bring you joy, does mumsnet say you need one?”

KickHimInTheCrotch · 04/04/2024 20:46

I could not live without either. Metal balloon whisk for pancake batter, waffle mix etc, silicone whisks for white sauce, hot chocolate etc. 2 peelers in case one is in the dishwasher when I need it or in case it breaks. Like a pp said it's used for more than just carrots - parmesan for risotto, slivers of courgette to griddle...

Oh shoot - I forgot about pancakes! Can you not just use a fork though?

Or a spoon.
But I get less lumps with a whisk!
Maybe you are more skilled 😀

Kalevala · 04/04/2024 20:50

If I already own something, and it is a common household item I would expect to find in a holiday let, then I keep it. I see it as part of the house, not personal clutter. Unless I am giving it away because someone I know needs one, but not just to the charity shop. If I don't own something I don't go out and buy it because someone else thinks I need one, like a hairdryer.

Iseeaghost · 04/04/2024 20:51

How does anyone manage without a whisk and a peeler? That's staples surely?!

nadine90 · 04/04/2024 20:54

They’re so small, keep both x

I’m absolutely not 😄

I think I’ll keep the whisk as I forgot that it is a necessary implement for making lasagne (white sauce) and pancakes. I might ditch the peeler though!

I take both a whisk and a peeler camping, they get used that frequently ! For me decluttering is getting rid of multiples or really obscure things. But it's your call.

Bumblebeeinatree · 04/04/2024 21:03

These things are really small, just keep them. Do you need an air fryer, deep fat fryer, induction oven, stand mixer, ice cream maker, smoothie maker, etc worth thinking about.

mumda · 04/04/2024 21:08

Don't bin. If you don't use them pass them on to someone who will use them!

spookehtooth · 04/04/2024 21:13

Kitchen tools are incredibly personal. Other folk own stuff that I think is crap, but I can't argue with the value for them if they're using it everyday and I won't try to persuade them otherwise

I'm also a strong advocate of being as minimalist as you can, and definitely binning or gifting items you'll never use. It makes finding what you do use harder

Kalevala · 04/04/2024 21:14

I missed that, are they actually throwing things away?

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 04/04/2024 21:16

Wow - I even take my vegetable peeler on holiday with me! I rarely use a hand whisk but certainly wouldn't get rid of it.

Well done for being able to peel veg with a knife without slicing your finger though. I just can't imagine feeling comfortable doing this. Hence taking my own peeler on holiday .

january2021 · 04/04/2024 21:17

When I say “chuck”, I mean chuck it in the “give away/recycle” pile. I won’t actually bin them!

OP posts:
january2021 · 04/04/2024 21:24

No, mine doesn’t look like that - it looks like a knife shape, something like this but older:

I also have a wooden spoon, which I do use a lot but there’s now a slight crack in the spoon. Does anyone else find this happens quite frequently with wooden spoons? My old one only lasted a year or so too! Perhaps it’s because I stick it in the dishwasher too often.

nonevernotever · 04/04/2024 21:27

In that case I would ditch the peeler, keep the whisk and buy a nice wide peeler in a similar shape to the one @takemeawayagain posted
