Decluttering - do I need a peeler or a whisk?

I’ve recently moved house and am having a major declutter of my kitchen utensils before our new kitchen is installed. I really want a clutter-free space. I have a peeler and a whisk that I’ve never used. Do I really need them or can I throw them away? For context, I use a knife for peeling carrots and potatoes, and have never felt the need to use a whisk. Is it worth keeping them or shall I get rid?

I would (politely) disagree with that, you can't use a fork to make a white sauce in a non stick pan but you could peel a carrot with a sharp knife.

You need a whisk to make white sauce? I might hold on to it for that reason then, since I am partial to a lasagne. (I’m planning to do lots more cooking once we get the new kitchen!)

Well, I'm probably not the person to ask as we have 4 peelers, of different types and 4 whisks! That said, if I only had room for one and I could use a knife to peel my veg, then I'd keep a whisk.

rainbowbee · 04/04/2024 20:13

I use peelers all the time. Can't get the knack with a knife. A whisk maybe twice a year for proper hot chocolate. You can whisk with a fork to a degree.

SpringOfContentment · 04/04/2024 20:14

Personally, we use a peeler (like a PP, we have one each. DH won't use mine, I will use his if mine is in the dishwasher and mid cycle) most days.
I probably use a whisk once or twice a week - pancakes, waffles, white sauce. And an electric whisk too.

I would rather be without the whisk, but really wouldn't want to be without either.

BUT, if you don't use them, why keep them?

I use both of mine all the time (in fact I have multiple of both!) - you could keep for now and then make a final decision once the kitchen is in, depending on how full it feels.

I love the peeler for thin slivers of Parmesan, as well as peeling veg.

Yes, I use all of those several times a week. OP - Do you not cook?

SOxon · 04/04/2024 20:14

leave the gun… bring the cannoli …

OhmygodDont · 04/04/2024 20:14

I mean if you don’t use them then don’t keep them. But how do you make cakes? Unless you have a proper mixer. Or gravy. I couldn’t be doing with clanging a fork in my saucepans.

RM2013 · 04/04/2024 20:15

I do use both of mine but if you don’t use them then yes get rid and they’d be fairly cheap to replace should you need them

PuttingDownRoots · 04/04/2024 20:16

If you haven't used in the past year... why do you think you would suddenly need one?

I use both those multiple times a week but you are not me.

Kalevala · 04/04/2024 20:17

Will people ever help you peel veg? Such as Christmas or Easter? I would struggle with a knife, I use my peeler regularly. Whisk I use less often but I would use for pancakes.

Kneeslikethese · 04/04/2024 20:17

How do you do life without a whisk??
Bechamel sauce, Custard, ganache, cheesecake. I could go on!

AuntLucy · 04/04/2024 20:18

Whoa! I have at least 5 different whisks and 3 peelers. All
are ESSENTIAL to my cooking happiness!

january2021 · 04/04/2024 20:20

Oh shoot - I forgot about pancakes! Can you not just use a fork though?

Woahtherehoney · 04/04/2024 20:22

I use both my peeler and my whisk loads but I have a special peeler haha - could never do it as quickly with a knife. And I bake a lot and make Yorkshires etc so use my whisk. So I personally wouldn’t get rid of either but if you don’t use them then get rid.

Will take longer.

Caspianberg · 04/04/2024 20:24

I make pancakes and waffle mix etc in the nutritibullet.
And actually I just use a silicone or wooden cooking spoon to make a white sauce

I do use a whisk though for some things

Oxo peeler, well oxo kitchen anything is the way forward

If you have reached adulthood with no need for them though I’m sure you will
manage

Namerchanger1 · 04/04/2024 20:02

I don’t think I’ve ever peeled a potato. Why would you?!

To make mash

bingoringo4 · 04/04/2024 20:26

Never used a peeler in my life, I use a knife. The whisk I only use for gravy.

Applescruffle · 04/04/2024 20:28

I get using a knife instead of a peeler but I couldn't not have a whisk.
What about gravy? Custard? Sauces like Bechemel? Hot chocolate? Cake batter? So many whiskable things!!

Vergingontheridiculous · 04/04/2024 20:28

I use a silicone spatula for white sauce. It's fine as long as you keep stirring and don't get lumps. A whisk is handy if you have lumps. I don't really use a whisk for anything, although I do have a whisk attachment for the food processor. It's not been out in a while. The only thing I can think of that definitely needs a whisk is meringue and I don't do them often (every decade or so).

lazyarse123 · 04/04/2024 20:29

I'm struggling to understand them being clutter surely they just live in a drawer.

MenoBabe · 04/04/2024 20:32

ImWatching · 04/04/2024 19:30

I use mine all the time but if you don’t use yours then there’s no need to keep them.

Yes, I can't imagine living without either, but if you don't use them, don't keep them?

BobnLen · 04/04/2024 20:32

Won't they both fit in a drawer, I use my peeler a lot for parsnips and carrots, I don't use the whisk much so it's gone in the less important stuff drawer in the utility room rather than the kitchen with the nutcrackers and stuff like that.

Applescruffle · 04/04/2024 20:33

Namerchanger1 · 04/04/2024 20:02

I don’t think I’ve ever peeled a potato. Why would you?!

I can't woth this comment. The only scenario I can think of where I wouldn't peel my potatoes wpuld be a jacket potato.

Do you leave the skin on your roast potatoes? Or chips? TBF, I might do skin on chips

but if so, surely you peel for mash?

TheTripThatWasnt · 04/04/2024 20:34

Gravy, white sauce and batter are my main hand-whisk uses. Everything else is done with an electric whisk. I wouldn't be without a hand whisk though.

Peeling veg is SO much easier with a good peeler vs a knife, so I wouldn't be without one of those. Butternut squash would be a nightmare with a knife - I'd have no fingers left!
