Child unwell on school trip

My son is currently on a school trip to Disneyland. He started to feel unwell with stomach pains and vomiting. He got split up from he’s group and was left alone in Disney village. I managed to get hold of the teacher to let her know and she said she would go to him. My son then text me and said she said she Can’t go to him because she is queuing for a ride. Nobody bothered to go look for my son for two hours. Aibu to make a complaint about this and take it further?

Year 11 or 12 ?

hmyh23 · 03/04/2024 19:50

I think these replies are a bit mean! I am a teacher who leads foreign trips and if a student called me I would leave the bloody ride queue to go and check on them. Most 16yr olds would still be upset and stressed when ill and away from home.

He went to the toilets to vomit and when he came out everyone was gone. Yes he’s 16 and not a baby but surely the teachers are there to look after the children and not on a free holiday. She was sent he’s location and he didn’t move from that spot because he was in agony and embarrassed

What about the other teenagers she's looking after?

Bluepetergarden · 03/04/2024 19:52

whenever I’ve done a theme park trip we always have a checkpoint eg a cafe where there’s always a staff member on duty

edwinbear · 03/04/2024 19:52

Ahhhh sorry, it was the teacher in the ride queue not OP’s son! Yes, I think she should have left her ride queue to check on him in that case.

G172125 · 03/04/2024 19:53

Just turned 16, year 11. First time in a foreign country . The teacher new the situation and he’s location but was to busy on her holiday to bother. He spoke to her on the phone.

I think people are being unreasonable- if it was my son I would want someone to check on him. The priority is looking after the children, not enjoying the rides. I'd be cross OP

Notadoormat4 · 03/04/2024 19:54

What the actual hell are these responses?

It is the teacher's responsibility to take care of the students - they are under 18 so yes they are still children! Should the teacher have left the queue? Yes! If this was the number students had then they should've been at a set spot for students to go to.

How is he meant to move if he's vomiting with stomach pain? Ridiculous responses.

Yes I would complain OP. It is a shame his friends left him, usually they are told they must stick to groups of three. He should have been checked on.

As a teacher, it is my responsibility to ensure all students are okay.

Year 11 on a trip to Paris in the Easter holiday!

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 03/04/2024 19:54

Yeah I’d be furious. He’s 16 and he’s in her care? Was the actual reason given because she was queueing for a ride?!

Absolutely agree. Being sick and possibly needing the toilet urgently as a 16 year old (or any age) is hard. Of course he should get some support.

I do agree it’s unusual for a year 11 to be on a trip organised by school.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 03/04/2024 19:57

These responses are ridiculous. Teachers are acting as Loco Parentis, you know, in the absence of an actual parent. Are posters really saying if that was their child then they'd just leave them while they carried on queueing for a ride??

crumblingschools · 03/04/2024 19:57

Did he think Disney was more important than GCSEs?

G172125 · 03/04/2024 19:57

Yes she was queuing for a ride. None of the other teachers came to look for him either. The was no meeting point just a number to keep in contact. The kids are allowed go around the parks without a teacher

You've said what I came to. He's not a child? Really? There's another thread here where OP was shot down for thinking it was ok to leave her 16 yo at home for a few days. Abandoned and sick in a foreign country is fine though!

Yes I'd complain. The teacher who stayed in the queue is surely not the only adult? She should have made sure somebody got to him and sought medical assistance. Honestly this place is batshit sometimes.

I assure you for the teachers it is neither free, nor a holiday

Not free? I agree it’s not a holiday as such, but not free?

At 16, he’s pretty much old enough to do an entire trip to Disneyland on his own, plane flight and all, let alone making his way back to the hotel. If I were the chaperone and knew he was sick, I would probably just call his cell to make sure it wasn’t anything serious.

And the teacher is clearly looking after the entire group of children that the OP’s son split away from.

FannyFifer · 03/04/2024 20:00

Tell him to go to the medical centre. They are great, can give Imodium & stuff.

AlohaRose · 03/04/2024 20:00

Why has he not phoned some of his friends to come back? They are the ones who seemingly left him? If he is ill enough not to be able to move, then he needs to phone the teacher again and let him/her know how unwell he is. Otherwise, he needs to go back to the hotel.

It would appear that they aren’t looking after anyone very well….

So why are you singling out the teacher who was queuing for the ride as being the one who was unreasonable rather than any of the other teacher?

I can’t believe there wasn’t a process in place and a teacher sat at a designated place for situations just like this.
