Man complained about me re yoghurt brand stopped doing a flavour

Auburngal · 03/04/2024 12:05

I was at work. Man (early 80s) asked me why we stopped doing a certain flavour yoghurt and the other two supermarkets stopped selling too.

Had my work’s handset on me and went onto the brand’s website and there wasn’t the flavour listed. Brand have dropped the flavour. On hearing the news - he flipped

He then went to the CSD asking for a manager. Manager said the same thing as me.

Do people realise that behaving like this is making staff leave retail?

Maybe you are not cut out for retail.
It's dealing with people mono a mono.
An 80 year old man was upset that a flavour was discontinued. He expressed that (irrationally as clearly not your fault).

I worked many years in the industry.

Mono a mono?

Maybe you're not cut out for peppering your posts with foreign expressions 😉

I have dyspraxia. I was serving on the till at the small supermarket I work at. A customer came up and as I was serving him I dropped something. I apologised to him and explained that I had dyspraxia and what it was.. He then very coldly told me I was in the wrong job. I replied that I was in the right job but it just took me a little longer to get things done.
I now wear a badge on my uniform saying I have dyspraxia which gives me a chance to educate customers when they ask about it.

Are you sure he wasn’t suffering from dementia? I’ve worked retail in the past and part of the job is to remain polite even when people are problematic. Customers can be suffering from a variety of mental and physical health problems that affect their behaviour, you should understand and accept that before you take a public-facing job.

Maybe. Or maybe he was just an absolute arsehole? Are we supposed to excuse everyone who is rude and abusive on the off-chance they have dementia, a mental illness, a chronic illness, a bad hair day etc? Where will end end??

Stop medicalising bad behaviour.

He probably WAS just a twat - but he MIGHT have been suffering from a mental health issue like dementia.

My lovely, gentle, funny Dad - who was so laid back he was almost horizontal - became aggressive and violent when his dementia worsened. He couldn't help it.

KeepingItUnderTheRadar · 03/04/2024 15:06

I worked in a call centre and my very first customer calmly read out the building address to me and said 'I'll be waiting outside all day and I'll shoot you in the head when you walk out'

I had something very similar years ago - a guy who said he'd be waiting outside for me to kick my head in. Luckily my company take such threats very seriously and it was reported to his local police who updated me personally that they'd been round and given him a verbal warning. Plus after internal escalation all of his accounts (bank) - both business and personal - were closed. Very satisfying!

HazelBite · 03/04/2024 15:17

Its "The Customer is always Right" mantra that gets me. I used to be a manager for a concession in a department store, that was full of similar company concessions. The company I worked for employed "mystery shoppers" to test us. I was contacted by head office and hauled over the coals about poor customer service, I was a bit puzzled and asked to see the report, the mystery shopper described the Assistant as "darkhaired and plump older woman" (I was young and blond) it was obvious the shopper had gone to one of the other concessions! But would the company back down and apologise to me, no the mystery shopper was right and their employee was wrong.
I left soon after that!

Lovely supportive human

I mean, to be fair, the OP has a lot of threads moaning about her customers.

That’s sad. 😔 it’s an awful disease. Awful.

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 03/04/2024 15:24

To answer your question @Auburngal I realise this but I'd never behave like this.

People that do behave like this, don't give a shit.

I got called a cunt by an elderly husband and his wife for refusing to accept a coupon that was out of date. Do you think they had dementia too? Or could it possibly be that they are nasty wankers?

CloudywMeatballs · 03/04/2024 15:50

PP keep talking about how bad his behavior was. We don't know what his behavior was!!! All the OP said was that he "flipped" and then went to the customer service desk.

@Auburngal can you please describe what you mean by "he flipped"?

BurnoutGP · 03/04/2024 15:54

YANBU obviously. Try being a GP the entitlement and demand is just horrendous. I have been a GP for 30 years and never known anything like it.

BMW6 · 03/04/2024 12:31

Why are you taking this to heart? He's obviously a twat ranting at someone who had absolutely no control over hus favourite flavour being discontinued !

I'd just shrug it off.

He’s an old man in his 80’s. Someone’s dad and grandad. Possibly with dementia. Upset that his favourite yoghurt has gone. That’s it. End of story. It’s not a life-changing parable for modern life.

HotChocolateNotCocoa · 03/04/2024 16:17

I bet it’s Onken raspberry. I’m gutted that seems to have gone 🙁

I have more sense than to think it’s down to the shelf stackers in Tesco, though.

Dinoswearunderpants · 03/04/2024 16:20

I'm sorry but most people in retail don't have many other job prospects so doubtful they'll leave the industry.

However, I agree it's unnecessary to behave that way.

What on earth are you basing that on?
🤣

5128gap · 03/04/2024 16:26

The people who behave like this couldn't care less if people like you leave retail. In fact if I'm honest, I doubt most people give much thought to who stays and who leaves retail, and anyone who does wouldn't behave like that in the first place. So really, appealing to the public to behave or you'll quit is a fools errand. Far better to take it up with your managers to make sure you have the support you need to deal with difficult customers, the back up to know you're safe if they 'flip' and that the company will impose sanctions such as removing them from the store or barring them if they behave inappropriately.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 03/04/2024 16:28

Was it hazelnut yogurt? If it was then he was unreasonable. Actually, so much yogurt is unreasonable these days. Ive been reduced to buying really thick natural stuff and adding my own fruit and honey.

Aww, then that is perfectly ok for the OP to endure abuse in her place of work is it?
it’s actually such an endearing ,cosy story when you look at it like that!
Retail workers are wearing body cams to help keep them safe from ( a little bit cross) old gentleman!

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 03/04/2024 12:11

In his defence it sounds like he must have really liked that flavour.

If this had been about M&S prawn cocktails skips being withdrawn instead of yoghurt, I might have thought this thread was about moi. 😳

IcakethereforeIam · 03/04/2024 16:33

OP I think the people who do your job are amazing, you worked through the pandemic and nobody clapped for you. Without the supermarket workers, the delivery drivers, the binmen and the bods who unblock drains this country would be on its knees in no time.

ttcat37 · 03/04/2024 16:37

It was a bit OTT of him if he genuinely ‘flipped’ but no I don’t think anyone cares if people leave retail. It’s not the same as people leaving the NHS or teaching or whatever.
