Help me find wellies to wear everyday that aren't gaping!

I've searching for wellies for ages now. I'll be wearing them most days for muddy walks etc, nothing major but want them to be good quality as I'll be doing a lot of walking.

I have very slim calves and most wellies I've tried on are really gappy and loose on me which I hate as I want them to be stylish and a tighter fit.

I like the look of Le Chameau but too pricey, and Aigle but are these gappy?

Muck boots, had them for years and worn at least twice a day in very muddy woods with the dogs. Love them.

Loopsielou · 02/04/2024 20:54

Hunter. I wear mine every day with the horses and they haven't let me down

Amber345 · 02/04/2024 20:59

Merry People wellies are great. I have the ankle ones and wear them everytime I go out the house, including for dog walks, but they also do taller ones with adjustable fit for different calf sizes.

PermanentIyExhaustedPigeon · 02/04/2024 21:02

Grubs wellies. They're neoprene ones so stretchy round the calf, meaning they don't need to be as flappy. Really warm (without being sweaty), supportive, comfy enough to walk miles in, lightweight and flexible enough to drive in, and truly waterproof (I was in a stream with the kids and dog the other day and my feet stayed totally dry). Mine are Frostlines because I wanted the grippiest sole.

Wellies are just like that aren’t they? Do you need a waterproof horse boot maybe?

Yeah I meant a horse yard boot rather than a riding boot.

I love my aigles, I have 3 pairs and slim calves. They aren't happy. I wear them daily for dog walks and horses, on the beach as well and they have never let me down!

The quality is no longer the same as they're now made in China. Shame as I love the look of them!

I've got a pair of Hunter's. Had them just over a year. No issues. Use is rainy walks, some mud and walking around farm visits when raining. My issue is the buckle at the back. If I crouch down it presses into the back of my thighs (knee-high boots).

Which ones do you have please?

These are durable and you can choose regular or narrow calf.

Another vote for Aigle Parcours. My daughter spends alot of her work x leisure time in mud (horses) and the ones I bought her 5 years ago are still serving her very well.

ouch44 · 02/04/2024 21:48

I have plantar fasciitis so need a good supportive sole. I have Aigle Parcours which are great.

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 02/04/2024 21:49

I love my Le Chameau. I have the neoprene lined ones and they are warm as well as light but sturdy.

Other options I would go for are Muck Boots or Dubarry country boots (but they aren't cheap!)

Rewis · 02/04/2024 21:52

I have coral coloured HAI wellies. I have those and waterproof trousers on top

Cnidarian · 02/04/2024 21:56

I've heard people saying about Hunters not being the same quality since moving to China a lot. But I got my pair since that move and I've been wearing them 8 years so I don't know that there's much stock to be held in the view...

ahumblebumble · 02/04/2024 21:58

I've had my le chamaeus for three years now and wear them most day, almost all year round with the bloody rain we've been having! Really like them. Would never buy hunters now, my last two pairs split and let water in.

CKMondlerlife · 02/04/2024 22:14

I've recently bought some joules wellibobs on a recommendation from a friend. They're ankle boots and I've put a lovely arch support inside in and they are the comfiest things.

StormingNorman · 02/04/2024 22:19

Aigle do a slim fit. I think they might be called Aiglantine.

Fairfax and Favour and Penelope Chilver both do riding boots in a slim fit.

My calves are decidedly ‘sporty’ so it’s great to be able to use all this totally useless info 😂😂😂

StormingNorman · 02/04/2024 22:24

Bovrilla · 02/04/2024 20:40

Muck boots now also made in china and split, like Hunters do

I have Aigle and love them. Get the Parcours ISO2 with adjustable sides. They've got vibram soles and I walk miles in mine, as i work in them a lot, and this winter's dog walks have definitely required wellies!

Second the Aigle Parcours. Mine must be coming up on 10 years old now and look as good as new. I’m not sure they’d suit someone looking for a slim fit though.

This is definitely true. Most people who rave about hunters will have had them for years and from before they got sold to China. I like my Le Chameau. They've lasted me 2 years so far and I wear them most days for dog walking. I've tried every brand. I'm surprised people are recommending muck boots as lightweight - mine are so cumbersome. They're the only wellies I have given up on before they gave up on me, they drove me crackers.

Lulaloo · 02/04/2024 22:39

Aigle all the way, very comfy and sturdy.

SweetCinnamon · 02/04/2024 23:07

Definitely Muck Boots - last forever and have neoprene around the ankle so they fit my skinny legs!

abracadabra1980 · 03/04/2024 10:52

Yes if you're petite like me, I'd take the gamble as the fit is great. (I'm a 3.5/4 - usually get a 4 in wellies as I like to buy sheepskin insoles for warmth). It's true, when they were made in England they were much better, but now, as with everything, they are made abroad. *bonus with kids' version is that they also have a reflective strip on the back - if that's any use to you! As I've said, I've tried so many, and none have lasted more than two years. I even had some Dubarrys (so not technically a welly) but at £300+ they weren't cheap - hated them-too flat and fiddly to get on, so resold on Ebay a few years back.

abracadabra1980 · 03/04/2024 10:53

Re the PP and Muck Boots - I didn't like mine - way too heavy at the sole and I couldn't run round an agility course with them because of it.

Ifailed · 03/04/2024 11:12

I use a pair of light-weight walking boots and gaiters. The latter, after a quick was under the tap are left to dry over-night and go in the wash when-ever I remember.
