To expect to be working until the day I die.
Just that really not sure I'll ever buy my own place at 53 years of age so stuck paying rent and my private pensions only have value as a lump sum and state pension not enough to live on.
I personally think if I ever reach state pension age I will still work part time to have enough money anybody relate to this

My father does. My mother can't anymore but my father finds some part-time work gives them more financial flexibility.

Almost 20% of pensioners could claim benefits ( a large percentage could but dont claim ) in addition to the state pension - so if you only have state pension there is additional support

there often comes a point when continuing to work becomes impossible- illness, infirmity or agism

https://www.gov.uk/benefits-calculators

This links to some benefit calculators that could be useful in finding out what you're entitled to. Of course it's very likely to change as you're over 10 years from retirement but it might give you an idea

Benefits calculators

Find out what benefits you could get, how much you could get and how to claim

If you get full state pension you are NOT entitled to any benefits I can assure you …if you get the lesser amount because you haven’t paid enough NI you may be able to claim a little but it won’t be made up state benefit amount

BlueMoonOnce · 03/04/2024 10:47

But surely if you rent there will be help available?

You can get Pension Credit though, depending on your income.

Nope not if you get full state pension…it’s only made up with pension credit if you didn’t pay a full stamp but it’s still not as much as a full state pension…sorry

LaurieFairyCake · 03/04/2024 11:06

Yes you can get your rent paid as a pensioner even if you get full state pension / pension is only about £180 a week so definitely not enough to pay rent

Nicetobenice67 · 03/04/2024 11:08

Full state pension is in fact 221.20 per week

You make the claim for HB/CT based on a low income. The free bus pass and other reduction in ticket etc prices help. Likewise glasses, prescriptions etc. We have lots of free or really cheap lunch clubs etc, the Churches do coffee mornings, there's foodshare etc it's about joining FB pages and seeing what's about.

Full state pension is £221.20 per week prior to April it was £ 203.85 not £180 maybe your talking about ppl who haven’t paid a full stamp

My dad got housing benefit in addition to his state pension (and attendance allowance - before he needed personal carers, paid for a cleaner I think). He didn't get pension credit as he had a small private pension + full state pension but I am pretty sure that the HB paid for all or nearly all of his rent (1 bed HA bungalow).

Why is your private pension so small?

You have 15 years to pay into it until you retire.

* Edit *

The compulsory pension contributions were introduced 12 years ago, so that's 27 years of contributions by the time you're 68.

What's gone wrong / going wrong?

Or who retired before 2016 and have a lower basic state pension

peakygold · 03/04/2024 11:45

Find a nice partner who has a decent pension pot and just wants company and the odd meal cooking for them. Preferably a widow/er, with their own house. Plenty of us do 😉

So long as both parties are honest with each other, that sounds delightful. I imagine it would also work with two or three good friends pooling their resources and living together for companionship and sharing of bills.

I haven't paid into the one for a long time because I'm paying into workplace one and I'll have the state pension.
They are not performing too well that's why small.

You can claim Attendance Allowance and Pension Credit.

If you get Pension Credit, you'll automatically get full Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.

I know this is the case because I get all of these.

Are you talking about disability benefits …..I’m not and not sure op is either just in general if you just get state pension after retirement you won’t get anything else not talking about pip ect

TheShellBeach · 03/04/2024 12:25

And in fact, I've just assisted my neighbour to get all the benefits I mentioned above.

She now gets full State Pension, a small NHS pension, Attendance Allowance, Pension Credit, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.

It's getting either PIP, ADP or Attendance Allowance which changes the goalposts. She doesn't get full Pension Credit, but just getting it at all means she's entitled to HB and CTR.
