To Love Beyoncé's New Album?

I've never been a Beyoncé fan before and have never understood the hype surrounding her but I absolutely love her new Cowboy Carter album! Her voice sounds amazing! I've seen quite a bit of negative stuff online about her covering Jolene but aibu to love the album and think it's her best yet by far? I've got friends who are big fans of hers but say they much preferred Lemonade so am wondering if it's because it's so different that it's appealing to people who weren't Beyoncé fans before

I haven't listened in full yet but am quite interested. Not blown away so far. Voice powerful as ever, some decent country pop. Happy to see Shaboozey on there.

I think the Jolene cover is a miss. I'm all for a new interpretation but it seems to really miss the point of the original with the brittle posturing. Plus 'i raised his kids and I raised him'. How infantilising.

Just a poor choice of song. If she'd wanted to go down the 'fight for my man' route, something fiery by Loretta Lynn would have been a much better basis rather than interpret Dolly's gentleness as patheticness.

Maybe it shows the complexity of staying in a messy marriage and making a fool of oneself by externalising blame but I think a lot of listeners will just end up asking 'is bloody Jay Z worth all this bellyaching on album after album?'

Not a fan of her in any way. Utterly overrated. But I’m not sure what that tells anyone about me apart from the fact that I don’t like her, lest some MNers try to imply anything else 🙄

Totally agree. I’m amazed anyone would want to have an affair with him he’s neither attractive nor particularly interesting and seems to have made a career out of whining

Apparently it makes you jealous of her if you aren’t into her music 😂😂

But to say people who aren’t fans of Beyoncé’s music are hateful and jealous is perhaps the most pathetic, hilarious, sycophantic nonsense I’ve read in a very long time, so thanks for the laugh 🤣

@YaMuvva I know! It's absolutely hilarious because this isn't what I said at all!! Grin When the point has flown so far over your head as to be in an entirely different universe! Grin

Maybe you could expand on what those "particular type of people" are.

I don’t hate Beyoncé or her music. Hate requires passion and deep feeling, it’s very close to love, and I don’t have those kind feelings for many people let alone a celebrity I don’t know.

But her music isn’t my type - so shoot me.

I sometimes imagine these overly passionate statements about celebrities are said with a wobbly bottom lip and wonder if the sycophants know that Beyonce isn’t gonna read it and she’s never gonna be your mate.

BTW the ‘she can keep her man’ comment is in DIRECT REPLY to HER (rather provocative) lyrics on Jolene. She has changed them to “you can’t keep my man” or some nonsense. Not a random dig at the woman. HTH.

I think in her early days with dc they had very very good producers & the records wer pretty much all huge winners! Last year or was it 2022 she had a truly awful single out that was simply irritating.....what she represents now is a mystery to me......there are lots of great new songs & artists out there today - her productions are poor compared to many!

OhmygodDont · 06/04/2024 14:54

Why would. Anyone but a good digger want her man. He cheats more than a tom cat 😂

iamwhatiam23 · 06/04/2024 22:36

Grapewrath · 05/04/2024 22:13

Also Jolene is a bit cringe- nobody wants your man Beyoncé. Apart from maybe the police

😂😂

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 06/04/2024 22:47

I don't like it, to be honest. Only heard 2-3 tracks but not at all as good as her usual.

Francisflute · 06/04/2024 22:54

Not sure what a PP means by 'a certain type of people'.

For my 2p worth, I do admire Beyonce's talent and work ethic and like some of her output but I do think the hype is out of proportion to the quality. Some absolutely cracking work but plenty of warbly ballads and I think it appeared overconfident to play both Etta James and Diana Ross (well, a fictionalised version) on film. Fantastic though her voice is, she wasn't able to summon the grit to do Etta justice.

I think there's a bit of a back and forth of being marketed as a peerless star (since before it was really earnt), some fans responding with the kind of idolatry not seen in recent years, and I think other folk being wound up by the air of being very, very special and a bit humourless (e.g. pregnancy announcements, Kanye West's stage invasion- that wasn't her fault of course but I think she knew him well) that leads to a tennis game of building her up and knocking her down online. I hope she and her kids don't read it (I don't know whether they're all of reading ages).

The points about 'she can keep her man' are in riposte to her own lyrics both on Jolene and Lemonade.
