To think pouches are awful?

I have two DCs and have never fed them from pouches. I see babies and toddlers sucking on them everywhere and it seems horrible for their teeth? Also for having a routine of eating at mealtimes or teaching them to eat properly. I recently spoke with a friend (who I am quite close with and believe she’s a wonderful mum) and she told me her 8 and 10 yo children still eat from pouches, especially if they’re on a day out, etc.

AIBU to despair at the prevalence of pouch feeding?

I mean, surely they're OK on the go or as a once in a while quick tea? Mine had mostly cooked from scratch but damn those pouches are handy if you are out and about! Or cannot cook worth a damn? I'm struggling to understand why it's your business really; breast or bottle/home cooked or pouches, they will at some point eat something off the floor 😁

it is, kudos for pointing that one out. Full marks, have a medal etc…

another idiot who thinks everyone is a dolt who hasn’t a clue. Seriously, stop with the condescending BS. You’ll feel better for it.

As someone said, food was likely chewed and then transferred waaaay back. But in living memory then, if you’re on the pedantic high horse, most adults were purée fed. But you’re clearly just spoiling for a fight here.

‘Quite clearly’? You have no idea about oral motor disabilities but you felt free to lob insults at parents of children with them. You don’t get off by now saying ‘quite clearly I didn’t mean those children’

I actually did BLW with both my kids, nevre pureed anything, so I'm not trying to justify anything, except for every parents right to choose what's right for them.

Why would you want to make other mothers feel bad? What's your motive here?

Eminybob · 02/04/2024 18:11

And how can you call it lazy? Surely BLW is lazier, you are just giving baby food from your own plate.
My friend did full annabelle carmel, she bought a special baby blender, had a freezer especially for her purees, spent hours batch cooking and freezing, defrosting, etc etc.
That's not lazy!
Same as bottle feeding is not the lazy option, sticking baby on the boob when it cries is far lazier than making up bottles etc etc.

All options have pros and cons. And its no ones decision except the parents.

Tessisme · 02/04/2024 18:17

Oh yes, I’m sure cavemen were pureeing food for their babies 🤔

Yeah, let's be cavemen @CloudsUnderwater with their average life expectancy of 30 odd years. What the hell do cavemen have to do with any of this? I mean, if we still lived like cavemen, we'd be struggling to find a flat surface for our Tripp Trapp high chairs. And there'd be nowhere to plug in the steamer for the lightly steamed broccoli. Nightmare.

I didn’t intend for this to turn into a bun fight.

again, my original AIBU was about the prevalence of pouches. I ALSO HAVE FED MY DCs purées (homemade and jarred) whilst weaning! I actually think BLW is a bit faddish and have just given them our food when it seems appropriate (ie they’re a bit bigger). Again it’s more the prevalence of the pouches and seeing preschool or primary aged children sucking them down on transit or whatnot. They’re everywhere and whilst o see the utility for a now and again (which of course I don’t know by seeing a one off in the bus) it also seems unfortunate to me that they are so common. In addition to the teeth issue, it seems like lots of plastic waste.

I think most people have lost interest in what you've said to be honest!

The "what did we do in our day" think you're unreasonable!

The "I use them" think you're judgemental.

You've not come across well.

But you do you and don't judge others.

Noyesnoyes · 02/04/2024 19:29

Ignore @CloudsUnderwater

She thinks is being vegetarian is being fussy!

I think she thinks is everyone should eat everything they're served and not actual have a preference or a choice!

Not someone anyone need take any notice of!

🦇 💩 crazy ideas about food!

PonyPatter44 · 02/04/2024 19:35

Me again. If you add a decent slug of rum to the strawberry and apple pouch, it makes an acceptable daiquiri. Same goes for the mango one.

I think these things are wasted on babies, personally.

Crikey, don't be telling me that! The road to ruin lies before me😆😆

My nearly 2 year old was weaned on purees with a fair amount of purees and yesterday fed himself a full roast lamb dinner. Today he had fish pie which he also ate himself, in fact he's been able to feed himself for months and months now and nursery comment on his good eating skills. Plenty of other babies and toddlers I know were weaned on purees and were completely fine too.

But since you're such an expert on weaning, I'd love to know your qualifications or are you just judgemental, condescending know it all?

I was in a team meeting (professional job) afew months ago, and a colleague was sat there eating an Ella's kitchen pouch! Admit I was suprised, but what is the harm, especially if it gets fruit into kids of any age.Dd aged 2 still has them.
7yo won't eat them but could if she wanted.

Also, you seem quite uptight about the mealtime thing...young kids are often 'little and often' grazers so can need to eat between meals.

DD1 had mostly homemade/our meals with some shop bought pouches etc.
(We had time to do more cooking then)
DD2 had mostly pouches/jars etc with some homemade/our meals then fingerfoods aswell.
Both have been breastfed well into toddlerhood and got plenty of nutrition that way, so I didn't feel too guilty!

I don't think exclusive feeding of pouches or jars for meals is ideal, but there are plenty worse things you can do as a parent than give your kids those, especially the fruit ones.

AIBUnamechanger9 · 02/04/2024 23:14

@Twolittleloves but wouldn’t the fruit be the worst for teeth? Loads of sugar (albeit natural) without the friction of chewing to push it away?

OMG, soooooooo much worse than a mashed banana....oh, wait. The obsession on MN with sugars in fruits is mind boggling.

If we didn’t have a massive obesity crisis that was sinking our public health service and £40 million a year spent on the removal of decaying kids teeth, you would have a point.

Sure, pouches aren’t fuelling this, but they’re part of a wider picture where we feed kids suboptimal food that are bad for their teeth.

I meant in terms of the quality of the food- of which I think the savoury ones are more questionable.
Plain fruit and veg ones are just that....blended fruit and veg, the 'meal' ones not so easy to know what's in them.

AIBUnamechanger9 · 03/04/2024 18:02

@CallItLoneliness my dentist told me smoothies are bad for teeth for the same reason, you’re sucking down all of the puree and sugar without the mechanical friction fibre from chewing to loosen debris, so the liquified sugar just sits on the tooth. I am imagining it’s the same principle with pouches?
