To think pouches are awful?

I have two DCs and have never fed them from pouches. I see babies and toddlers sucking on them everywhere and it seems horrible for their teeth? Also for having a routine of eating at mealtimes or teaching them to eat properly. I recently spoke with a friend (who I am quite close with and believe she’s a wonderful mum) and she told me her 8 and 10 yo children still eat from pouches, especially if they’re on a day out, etc.

AIBU to despair at the prevalence of pouch feeding?

I think your mistake was treating people like they’re stupid and don’t know there are alternatives to pouches, which of course, they do.

never a good idea to call women trying their best ‘Harpies’ either.

Of course it’s possible to feed children without using pouches but I wanted to because I was short on time, liked the ranges of foods in the pouches and DT’s liked them before moving onto other foods. Perfect solution.

@VestibuleVirgin

Your first post "was not stating an opinion"

It was condescending and somehow trying to say you were a better mother.

Also, out of interest what's all "this person of the year nonsense",

It comes across very oddly.

You're the one who brought the "back in my day" sanctimonious energy like you're better than everyone else who didn't (have to!) do things exactly like you did.

Don't pretend you were only pointing out that there's alternatives to pouches. We can all see it.

You were judging. Hard. So I'm not sure why you're so upset when you get called out on it.

The internalised misogyny is dripping off your posts with your judging of other mums and your use of the phrase "screaming harpies" for any woman who mildly disagrees with you. You seem to think you've been personally attacked - you haven't.

IAmAnIdiot123 · 02/04/2024 08:30

I don't seena difference between the pouches of food and the jars, surely the pouches are just easier when out and about? We always spoon feed my son with the pouch stuff when we are out for the day, saves space.

At home he will occasionally have one if we have had shit dinner but otherwise he just gets a blended version of what we have.

CammyChameleon · 02/04/2024 10:11

I used pouches and jars in addition to homemade mush and chunkier foods when weaning.

For my first couple of kids, we were weaning in a small rental and had a tiny fridge with a tiny freezer compartment, so there wasn't room for making batches and freezing, so homemade mush had to be eaten while fresh.

As it did my older two no harm, I saw no problem with using pouches and jars occasionally for my third child either.

Another morning of DS refusing porridge and weetabix, and finally eating an Ella's pouch. (I sound like a sad Ella's Kitchen ad.)
Not quite sure what you're on about @VestibuleVirgin , but your tone has been consistently harsh. If you dish it out, etc.

You're right, there are so many adults who only know how eat pureed food now because they were never taught to eat solid foods due to being weaned on purees. You see them all the time, sucking on pouches or asking in restaurants for the waiter to blend their meal.

Oh no, hang on a minute, that's not true at all. BLW is a relatively recent phenomenon, most of my generation, plus others were weaned exclusively on purees and learned to eat normal food just fine.

My DD struggled to wean. How dare you be so condescending and call me lazy. She ate purées because of her difficulties, she did not have difficulties because she ate purées. Parents like you cause parents like me untold grief in our attempts to get disabled children weaned with your patronising ‘they should be eating what you are eating’ whine. How fortunate for you that your children managed and now you feel fit to lecture others.

CatLoaf · 02/04/2024 15:55

Why is it lazy to feed children puree? Couldn't it be argued it's lazy to sling food at them for them to feed themselves? 🤔
(I definitely don't think that about BLW btw!)
@CloudsUnderwater You just sound so thoroughly unpleasant - would you ever say to a friend in real life who was using a pouch/puree that you thought they were lazy? It's such a loaded word, when so many parents can be on their knees with exhaustion, or even just a bit overwhelmed tbh.

CatLoaf · 02/04/2024 16:05

Ah OK - after a brief search of your posts, you sound like a knob in general 🤷‍♀️

I use the fruit ones on long runs instead of running gels <missed point of thread>

Where? Where are you seeing all these children?

Babies and toddlers maybe, then they grow out of it. And if they don't, it is usually due to other issues, not how they were weaned.

How dare you judge others parenting and call them lazy.

Being a bitch doesn't suit you, honey.

@CloudsUnderwater you are aware that until about twenty years ago or so all babies were pretty much purée fed, yes?

That includes in the war years when there weren’t shop bought versions. I seem to see plenty of adults eating proper food with cutlery in restaurants. So your argument really isn’t stacking up. Baby led weaning is just a different way of doing things, that’s all.

And how exactly do you think throwing lumps of food on my babies tray would change her genetic make up?

Do you also tell parents of children in a wheelchair that it is their fault for being lazy and making excuses?

There are a couple on here who need to chill out a little. Why are they so angry ?

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/04/2024 17:25

Oh yes, I’m sure cavemen were pureeing food for their babies 🤔

I think they used to chew it up and transfer it mouth to mouth like some animals do.
