To be surprised by Sainsbury's selling gin in an oil can?

AIBU to think this is not a very sensible idea?

Feels like the next thing will be lavender gin in a meths bottle. Engine gin

I used to live in a lovely middle class suburb. Then Sainsbury’s started stocking this and the whole area has degenerated into something akin to Gin Alley, with toothless drunks swigging openly from oil cans. I’m now in negative equity.

I don’t understand why it is “wrong “. Surely it’s just packaging / a marketing gimmick . Are you worried that someone is going to put it in their car by mistake ?

What?
Ageism has no place anywhere

whistleblower99 · 01/04/2024 21:33

This gin has been around forever.

Snugglemonkey · 01/04/2024 21:39

I like the design. Ivalso like the gin inside. It is a light, summery gin. Delicious!

WhamBamThankU · 01/04/2024 21:41

The gin industry is so saturated companies need to stand out. They clearly have in this case.

Dartmoorcheffy · 01/04/2024 22:08

I love the tin and the gin tasted lovely too. Got mine in tesco.

IDontHateRainbows · 01/04/2024 22:14

Don't tell OP about black cow vodka that comes in milk carton packaging

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 01/04/2024 23:38

It’s not an actual oil can though is it. It’s a quirky design and I don’t see how it’s different to gin in a can that is already pretty prevalent. i don’t see the issue!

ThirtyThrillionThreeTrees · 01/04/2024 23:47

I really think you need to contact their customer service department about this drop in standards and this lower class item that you have been subjected to.

You probably have a case for distress and damages too.

Keep away from Lidl & Aldi what ever else you do. Sometimes they have engine oil cans with real oil in their middle aisle. I prefer the ones with gins in them so was equally traumatised my recent visit.

When you have high standards, shopping is so difficult these days. Could you get one of your household staff to do it on your behalf instead?

Aldi had red wine in a plastic bottle this weekend. It was a flattened bottle too. Looked like olive oil. Just wrong.

I saw a red and a white tonight in Aldi that was a paper/cardboard bottle. Was tempted to try but it was pricier than my normal so decided against it

YANBU OP

I've lost count of the amount of times I've accidentally poured this into my car's engine.

And come to think of it, that gin I poured last night tasted a bit off....

Carrotsandgrapes · 01/04/2024 10:34

I'd have more safety concerns if they were selling engine oil in gin bottles.

😂😂😉

KreedKafer · 02/04/2024 19:13

Why do you think it’s not sensible? Nobody’s going to accidentally pour themselves a glass of Castrol GTX and drink it thinking it’s gin, and unless people keep their gin in the shed, they’re not going to accidentally put booze into their engine either.

It’s also not a new brand; it’s an Italian gin and it’s been around for years. Lots of places stock it.

CranfordScones · 02/04/2024 19:39

Reminds me of that restaurant trend where plates were considered too banal, and everything had to be served on a shovel or something equally stupid.

Our Sainsbury's now has almost a whole aisle of gin which probably means the gin trend is well past its peak.

The oil can doesn't bother me as long as it doesn't need an entire toolkit to open it (which is what most modern packaging seems to need).
