Any other Christians annoyed at what society has turned Easter into?

Opol · 31/03/2024 14:20

I’m resigned that the same has been done to Christmas. But for me that is “only” the birth of Christ.

As a Roman Catholic, Easter is of far more importance to me. For me, God’s love for humanity meant he sacrificed his only son. Jesus’ resurrection is literally the embodiment of the victory of light over darkness, good over evil etc.

I don’t wish to gate keep but seeing it reduced to Easter baskets and chocolate rabbits is unpleasant to witness. I’m more annoyed at society making everything hollow and superficial via consumerism and over consumption.

That's not part of the conversation though - nor do I suspect is it accurate. But that's another thread you might like to start

Edited

It’s perfectly relevant to the conversation here and perfectly accurate.
You pointed to Christianity affected us as a state. I pointed out actually these days Christianity in the UK is not censoring our life it’s other religions that are doing that.

It's a festival to mark the beginning of spring. I think that's worth celebrating! Most cultures do.

You do realise that Easter is also observed in countries where it isn't spring. Where I live the arrival of spring is no more celebrated than the arrival of any other season.

I don't think there are things in your statement that are accurate.

And Christianity affects our life.

It should be treated as a religion in the same way other religions are

And it is getting less popular so it's only a matter of time

Flopsy145 · 31/03/2024 21:56

@IloveAslan did those countries always celebrate it? Or is it more of a modern adoption.
Historically Ostara would have been celebrated in countries where it was spring at that time.

If you hold beliefs that are based completely on old stories and folklore then you have to accept these days that people are going to question and disregard those beliefs in vocal and very dismissive ways. The whole concept of any religion is so unbelievable it’s actually quite shocking that anyone actually believes any of it when we have such access to factual information. To then have it still influence a huge part of our society is even more astounding, why on earth are so many schools under church control for example? Christianity in this country is absolutely not a poor, hard done by religion. It has far too much power considering how outdated it is as a concept.

Why is it acceptable to do that to a Christian and not a Muslim or a Jew? I mean I have no problem if you don't have beliefs etc. Each to your own but I have actually had people mocking me for going to church. That shouldn't be acceptable.

For all those talking about Christian values, Jesus did a lot of preaching…but to me, this sums it all up and is a guide (difficult to follow at times!) for how to live life, and guides my philosophy of life in general.

“Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you”

Ah isnt that lovely. And yes Jesus was written as the ultimate hippy with all the meaningless word salad passages. A bit like that The Boy and the Fox/Mole/Horse book, just syrupy phrases with no real meaning. Which makes it very easy for Christians to ignore about 90% of all the other biblical literature - mass murder, sacrifice, blame women for all sin, hatred for other cultures and ways of living, more mass murder….

@Yourethebeerthief is talking about 2000 years of Christian culture.

recent abuse cases, whilst abhorrent obviously do not discount the beliefs of billions of people and 2000years of history.
Christianity is the foundation of many countries.
It just is, that’s history and we can’t erase that because people don’t like it.

however it came about, however it evolved and what it is now does not discount history.

It wasn't just the abuse though was it? It was the cover ups, and the way paedophiles were actively moved around the world, free to abuse further. Again, and again and again. Each time that happened, children's lives were irrevocably damaged. And they still have the temerity to lecture people on how to live their lives? Really??

It’s a ‘nasty put-down’ to you because you feel it ridicules your belief, but it is just a very literal statement about what Christians believe. They believe a man who cannot be seen or heard lives in the sky/heavens above.

Thats not a fact. It’s an opinion

You’re quite right, it’s my opinion. However, an opinion doesn’t have to be watered down so not to offend someone with a belief, which is also not a fact. If any of the many religions and gods out there are ever proven to be a fact without a shadow of a doubt, then you’d have a bases to be offended when someone suggests it’s ridiculous or ‘invisible sky man’.

Last time I checked, Christians didn't believe God or Jesus to be 'imaginary', so how can it be a literal statement?

1dayatatime · 31/03/2024 21:58

@DanielGault

"Which is a tidy catchphrase, until you read about the mother and baby homes, sales of children to America, and the Tuam Babies. And that's just one tiny country on the edge of Europe. There were plenty of other atrocities elsewhere."

So some bad shit happened by certain practitioners in the past, which is entirely unacceptable. But that doesn't condemn the entire organisation today does it?

In the past certain doctors performed horrific practices on patients in order to improve their knowledge and advance their careers. This doesn't mean that I have a major problem with the entire medical profession today .

In the past the mentally unwell suffered horrifically in asylums but that doesn't mean I have a major problem with the provision of mental health support etc etc.

I mentioned the recent abuse cases to show just how recent some of the mass trauma caused by Christianity, there would be a lot of further trauma going back through the entire history of it.

The beliefs were forced onto people, it's no different than people in North Korea being forced to believe that Kim Jong Un is a God. They'd be tortured and killed if they say they don't believe.

I don't have an issue with stating facts from history, but it's the whole attitude that we wouldn't have charity or any good values at all without Christianity that I have an issue with. We would have.

So just because history happened one way, that doesn't mean we need to be grateful for it and that we have to thank Christianity for anything positive we may see. I'd say we would have been in a far better state now without Christianity!

Maybe do a bit of research on it. And if you find you're still ok with it, take a very, very long look in the mirror.

Again we’re not talking about other religions on this thread. You have an issue with Muslims or Jews, start your own thread about them. I’ve already said that I don’t agree with any religion. Having an opinion on going to church is just that, if you are happy with your choice of how you spend your time then I’m sure it will just wash over you.

But no decent person would stand outside a church and give their opinions on Christianity. If a Muslim/Hindu/Jewish etc person started a thread on MN about aspects of religion, that would be a different matter. Unfortunately the opposite doesn’t apply, as once again on Saturday whilst just walking around my local town, had yet another few evangelists with megaphones preaching about Jesus’s love and how we’re all going to hell if we don’t believe. Seems it’s fine for Christians to bother people who have no interest in your religion, but replying in an open discussion is offensive.

I don’t see that.
This is a thread asking Christians for opinions. OP asked that but hasn’t really got that.
Go over to the Jewish Mumsnet section and no one is ever rude.
And yes, people do stand outside churches shouting hatred catching people as they go into mass. They do it at my parents, my brothers, my cousins and our church.

They do it outside Canterbury Cathedral…
They do it….

cakeorwine · 31/03/2024 22:01

I think the Christian values our society were based on - don't be a sinner. Believe in our God . If you are a sinner, you will go to hell. If you believe in Jesus, you will be saved.

Go to church every week. And don't belong to another religion. Or blaspheme.

It is a literal statement of how a non-believer sees a deity. If you choose to believe there’s a man in the sky go right ahead, but unless proven otherwise deities are a product of human imagination.

Beware, you’ll get shouted down that Easter isn’t Pagan and Pagansim is bollocks but certain posters on here who ignore historical information and post what they think as fact whilst demanding everyone else respects Christianity.

On a happier note, it’s been nice to hear there are other Pagans on MN.

In fact we’ve had Christians, Atheists, Pagans, Muslims, Hindus and more on here. What a lovely melting pot of people.

elliejjtiny · 31/03/2024 22:02

Not anymore but I remember feeling hard done by as a child when my Muslim friend got 12 Easter eggs and I (as a Christian) only got 2. Absolutely outrageous!

Yes it does. The organisation doesn't seem to care does it? Why won't they pay the compensation that they agreed to pay?

Very Very few are.

Thats discrimination.

And give us your money, and marry when you’re a child, and accept sex whenever you’re asked to, and behave or we will burn you for a witch, and convert to our religion or we shall kill you, and give us your land, and…

and yes I love an Oxford comma.

Gottagottachchch · 31/03/2024 22:05

@SpeedyDrama i don’t think it’s word salad though, I think Jesus was very clear - which is probably why everyone (Christian’s included and probably most of all!) fail to live up to it. Basically, love everyone, forgive people if they do you wrong, put yourself last - easier said than done - actually impossible to do. If you read the parables there are lots of examples in real life, I think to make it easier to understand.

Moonmelodies · 31/03/2024 22:06

Rather than getting annoyed with what people have turned Easter into, would it not be better to simply forgive them?
