have just rung police, young couple up the road, known drug users, so pissed/stoned sitting on bench near shops, guy has wet himself, she actually can't focus or speak, lo in buggy crying eyes out.

it's wet and raining, cold etc. BUT i couldn't trust them in my home, soooo, instead of inviting them in and seeing to lo, i have called police in hope that social services will become involved etc. am now worried i have put lo in more strife!

You have done the right thing - poor child!
The best thing that can happen is that the Lo will be taken into care and the family will have intensive parenting help and support before they get her back unsupervised. In this situation you must go with your instincts to protect the innocent and those that are unable to protect themselves. Well done for not turning a blind eye.

macdoodle · 28/03/2008 17:11

lenny so maybe ss will realise she needs a bit more support?
or maybe she (the mother) needs to put her child before her own selfish drug taking needs...she probably has had loads of support but prefers to take drugs - I have no sympathy at all for this - a lot of people are desperate for a LO to care for and love not treat like a toy to be discarded
oh and OP you are totally not BU nor a shit at all !

SheSellsSanctury · 28/03/2008 17:56

You have done the right thing.

I wonder how many other people had walked by and done nothing. Thankfully the police were interested too.

Radley · 28/03/2008 17:58

DON'T feel shit, you have definately done the right thing.

MadameCh0let · 28/03/2008 17:59

Poor little girl. Both her parents were out of it on drink/drugs????

How could you ignore that? You had to do something.

Janni · 28/03/2008 18:04

Well done for taking action. That poor little child.

nkf · 28/03/2008 18:06

You did the right thing. In fact, well done you.

jesuswhatnext · 28/03/2008 18:07

wpc from local station has now told me that lo 'is in a place of safety'. i can only assume that is tempory foster care. no other information will be given to me as i'm not a relative - just relived lo is safe for now

don't know where parents are, police won't say.

Good for you jwn for having the guts to do the right thing for that wee baby. Don't feel bad - you know you had to do something for the lo's sake.

orangehead · 28/03/2008 18:13

You have done the right thing

hippipotami · 28/03/2008 18:18

You have definately done the right thing.

What happened after you rang the police? Or more hypothetically, what would happen in a scenario like this? Will the police and ss turn up at the bench there and then?

Just curious really, and hopeful LO was tended to straight away.

MadameCh0let · 28/03/2008 18:33

The LO probably has had a warm bath, clean clothes and a healthy meal.

I suppose that taking drugs and being so drunk you wet yourself is just not compatible with parenthood.

I would feel sorry for them if their child was taken from them, but I'd still be happy to hear it iyswim.

dizzydixies · 28/03/2008 18:37

you've not only done the right thing but something that a lot of people wouldn't take the time to do - well done

billysitch · 28/03/2008 18:44

YES - here here, most would walk on past and do nothing, well done!

WinkyWinkola · 28/03/2008 18:45

You did the right thing.

If you hadn't called the police, you'd be sitting there wondering what was happening to the LO. It's so sad.

But the SS wheels will be set in motion and hopefully, things will get better for all three of them.

hecate · 28/03/2008 18:45

Agree with everyone that you did the right thing. Someone needed to put that poor child first. Perhaps this will be the wake up call the parents need to get some help and sort themselves out.

jesuswhatnext · 28/03/2008 18:50

hippi - from what i can make out the police went to bench, spoke to parents and suggested going home - ss became involved after that, wpc intimated that ss were quite 'up to speed' with family situation and dealt with lo fairly quickly.

it's now dark and cold, all i hope is lo is warm and fed!!

OP posts:
hippipotami · 28/03/2008 21:00

Thanks for that jesus

I am so very pleased you intervened, as someone else said a few posts down, many people would not have done anything.

Hopefully LO is fed, clean, dry and tucked up in his cot.

readytoswiggin · 28/03/2008 21:15

well done you, you did the best thing for the 3 of them imo.

I hope the poor wee one is warm dry and fed, and safe from harm

LaDiDaDi · 28/03/2008 21:18

You have absolutely done the right thing.

Disenchanted · 28/03/2008 21:19

Well done

That poor baby will be warm and safe now!

HonoriaGlossop · 28/03/2008 21:30

you did a good thing today - well done

I'm sure the baby is with a foster carer and they will be much better off this evening than they were this morning - thanks to you.

AliciaJohns · 28/03/2008 21:37

Well done, you did absolutely the right thing.

purpleduck · 28/03/2008 21:41

zzzzp
You are absolved.

You did the Right Thing

babbi · 28/03/2008 21:43

You totally did the right thing.
DH is a police man and regularly says that they need the help of the public to be responsible and help them do their job.
They physically cant be everywhere and see everything- also people dont "do" things if they see a uniform around IYSWIM.

Very well done - you have helped the poor child.
