Worried about cars going past at night new build estate

I have recently moved into a new build and keep hearing cars go past at night. Obviously this wouldn’t normally bother me but we are right at the end and any further is blocked off as they were still building past our house. My neighbours have moved in but I don’t think it’s them. A few people have moved in at the top end but there would be no reason to come to the end part of the estate and go past . I’m worried people are scoping the houses. Aibu?

Have you actually seen them go past or can you hear them and think they’re closer than what they really are because it’s quieter at night?

Luckycloverz · 29/03/2024 23:58

So when you get up to look out of the window to see them, where are they going/coming from?

97Lucy · 30/03/2024 00:03

I see the lights go past but a few have come to the end and then turned round. It’s quite narrow due to it being blocked off at the moment whilst they finish building

Maybe they’ve just gone the wrong way then and needed to turn around? Is that possible?

chailatte8 · 30/03/2024 00:27

It could be people moving into the estate / potential buyers. Before I moved into my new build I was driving up all the time to check in on the build and have a nosey round the estate.

HeddaGarbled · 30/03/2024 00:33

Numerous cars driving into a dead end and then out again in order to “scope” your house? That’ll be the world’s stupidest burglars 😃

ChedderGorgeous · 30/03/2024 00:35

If its a new build they are probably scoping the house out for structural defects and shoddy workmanship.

Luckycloverz · 30/03/2024 05:53

Probably potential new house buyers or their satnav off whack down roads that aren't complete.

littleburn · 30/03/2024 06:01

Could it be people visiting homes further down the road, on-street parking and then leaving? New build roads can be narrow. Maybe its easier to drive up to the dead end at your house and turn around there.

VestibuleVirgin · 30/03/2024 06:03

Your life is going to be very long and wrought if you are worried about a few cars

lul1 · 30/03/2024 06:06

Security?

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 30/03/2024 06:17

Sat nav error

KeenGoldCat · 30/03/2024 07:50

Honestly, I don't think burglary is a hugely common crime anymore.
Electrical items are so comparatively cheap and ubiquitous, noone's breaking in to nick a TV or games console these days.
People want to steal luxury cars.
I don't know if that puts your mind slightly more at ease OP?

littlegrebe · 30/03/2024 07:50

Takeaway drivers getting lost most likely.

They're driving past your house, not sneaking around your back garden looking for open windows. In the nicest possible way you are being a bit silly, your house being visible to random strangers does not put you in danger unless you're in a witness protection programme.

tchotchke · 30/03/2024 07:52

If you’re concerned, get security cameras up front and back.

lunar1 · 30/03/2024 07:54

They might have a security firm do checks of the site at night.

Candleabra · 30/03/2024 07:54

Sat nav error, or using your cul de sac as a turnaround.

That’s a good call. If the estate is still being built then they might well have a security patrol.

I get where you are coming from op. There is seemingly no reason for people to be driving down your street so you question anyone who does.

Zanatdy · 30/03/2024 07:57

Could be security as when my parents bought a new build 30 odd years ago, there was a security van that patrolled day and night. The site wasn’t finished for years as it’s a huge estate and they were the 2nd people to move in, before they streets had names and were plots numbers.

Might be worth getting a ring doorbell & camera for the back of the house for security / peace of mind.

Either of those, or simply thinking this road could be a short cut, then finding it blocked.

As a pp said, people don't really scope houses these days. Burglaries are now rare. You're overthinking this

Good shout actually.
This taken me back to when a neighbour offered for his mate to replace the broken boiler in our first flat with a "second hand boiler".
When he was half way through installing it, I asked 'So where do you get a second hand boiler from?'
After seeming sheepish and my asking the question in a couple of different ways, he eventually said 'Oh we've got a guy that nicks them from a Persimmon estate being built'.
It was too far gone with the installation, I was only 25, he was middle aged and rough as hell, I didn't want to offend our equally rough neighbour - so I just let him get on with it!

tara66 · 30/03/2024 08:05

If there is a lot if building material and machinery on site perhaps it's someone trying to scout round planning/hoping to steal cement, bricks, tiles, pipes etc. that might be lying about? Building materials has gone up in price recently.

DianaTaverner · 30/03/2024 08:15

It could be people who've got mixed up with the new road layout. It could potentially be professional car thieves depending on the area, watch out if you have an attractive car.

Yes, when we moved on to a new estate first phase, we had security vehicles doing checks overnight.

BeMyGuest24 · 30/03/2024 08:21

Is it people just looking around the estate as they are passing? I take a drive around a new build estate near me occasionally just for a nose to look at how the houses and wonder if I could ever afford to live there. Not at night though!
