Wants to leave young cat to fend for itself whilst on holiday

I have been dating someone for a few weeks, and we have been getting along very well… I thought.

This evening, she told me she was going on holiday, and mentioned a young cat in passing… she hadn’t actually mentioned she had a pet at all!
I asked: “Who will be taking care of the cat?”
I was told that the cat would take care of herself!
What about water? “Cat never drinks at home”
And food: “Cat is a good hunter”
Can I collect your cat to be rehomed? “No, cat will be lost and confused to be taken to a strange place”

What would you do?

It made me very sad and upset to think of a cat coming “home” one day to find the family have upped sticks and left one day and all the doors and windows are closed!

report her to rspca?

OutOfTheHouse · 29/03/2024 13:00

I would stop dating this person for a start. I couldn’t be with someone who thought that was an ok way to treat a pet.

But before I did that I might well offer to feed the cat while they go away.

QueSyrahSyrah · 29/03/2024 13:01

I'd dump her, and report her to the RSPCA.

Jasmin1971 · 29/03/2024 13:07

Report her , disgusting behaviour

Mumof1andacat · 29/03/2024 13:07

Report her to the rspca and dump her. I could not be with anyone who treats animals badly

britnay · 29/03/2024 13:56

How old is the cat?
How long are they going on holiday for?
Do they live in the city or countryside?

DrJoanAllenby · 29/03/2024 13:57

Report her, shame her on social media and dump her, preferably in the middle of nowhere so that she has to spend a week in the wilds drinking rainwater and hunting for food.

She is a vile excuse for a human being.

toastandtwo · 29/03/2024 14:01

How young is young? When we were kids we had a cottage and our cat would regularly stay there for the week when we went back home to the city - we would invariably return to find him happy as could be having dined on mice etc for the week.
I wouldn’t personally leave our cat now for a week but that’s partly because he’s a real
people cat - some cats aren’t all that interested in human company.

AgnesX · 29/03/2024 14:05

Can you pop round and then steal the cat and take to the RSPCA/cats protection.

Would she give you the keys and allow you to look after the cat? And then dump her.

BobbyBiscuits · 29/03/2024 14:07

Domestic cats don't hunt for food. It wouldn't give them enough energy anyway. Think about how small a mouse or baby bird is?
There presumably is a cat flap?
In that case someone needs to simply fulfill food bowl and water bowl daily. She's a living fuckhead for not making provision for this.
I'd definitely dump them, and tell her to show you proof she's got a neighbour or cat sitting service to pop round, else you'll tell RSPCA.

EmilyTjP · 29/03/2024 14:07

Doesn’t sound like a very nice person to have a relationship with. Can you offer to go round and feed the cat?

Domestic cats will definitely hunt for food! I’ve had several that have basically stopped eating their cat food during the spring/summer when they’re hunting. There’s heaps of meat on a squirrel or rabbit… they can also easily catch several rodents a day which is probably pretty decent compared to the protein content of normal cat food.

K0OLA1D · 29/03/2024 14:14

We leave 3 cats home alone when we go away. But my parents live almost next door and come round as many times as needed to let them in or out and feed and do litter trays.

I wouldn't leave them completely unattended for more than a night!

EatCrow · 29/03/2024 14:15

Please think twice about having a child with her!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 29/03/2024 14:17

So you're back on the dating apps, then?

Oh, and you've just got yourself a rescue cat. That's nice.

MiltonNorthern · 29/03/2024 14:19

Do you know where she lives? If so, go and get the cat.

That

BobbyBiscuits · 29/03/2024 14:24

@toastandtwo I guess, if we're talking rabbits and stuff. Mine only have ever toyed with their pray, same as others cats I know.
I guess it depends on the prey available. In a less urban area they probably get more out of it!
The owner still needs to provide food if they've left the property for several days.

amylou8 · 29/03/2024 14:24

Whilst I would never do it my cat would be perfectly fine for a week with a huge bowl of biscuits and a few bowls of water. With access to the outside he'd catch some mice and drink from puddles. He'd probably have a fine old time to be honest.

Mycatmyworld · 29/03/2024 14:28

As soon as you leave a house with an animal in they go into panic mode, as to where the next meal is coming from etc. betting if any damage got done.. the poor animal would go. Unbelievable. Why are humans so horrible

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 29/03/2024 14:28

RSPCA won't give a fuck, don't waste your time talking to them.

I think your cats have issues if they do that. You can leave pets.

Well that's not true. Cats and dogs can usually both be left for a certain period of time. Cats are fine to be left alone for long periods but need fresh food and water daily as a minimum.

Mycatmyworld · 29/03/2024 14:35

New someone wouldn’t like my comment

Catza · 29/03/2024 14:36

Cats can be left alone for a few days with supply of food and water and access to the outdoors. Unlike dogs, they regulate their eating so won’t scoff any food left in one sitting. As long as someone can pop in every three days or so, I see no issue. I do, however, object to leaving the cat without food and water on the account that they never drink at home. Most likely, the cat will “adopt” a more caring family or a person in the neighbourhood.
