Wants to leave young cat to fend for itself whilst on holiday

I have been dating someone for a few weeks, and we have been getting along very well… I thought.

This evening, she told me she was going on holiday, and mentioned a young cat in passing… she hadn’t actually mentioned she had a pet at all!
I asked: “Who will be taking care of the cat?”
I was told that the cat would take care of herself!
What about water? “Cat never drinks at home”
And food: “Cat is a good hunter”
Can I collect your cat to be rehomed? “No, cat will be lost and confused to be taken to a strange place”

What would you do?

It made me very sad and upset to think of a cat coming “home” one day to find the family have upped sticks and left one day and all the doors and windows are closed!

We have a 24 hour rule. She’s fine for 24 hrs or a little longer if we leave her with double rations. There’s a cat flap so she can go out and the neighbours will feed her if she panhandles. Any longer, we get someone in to top up the food.

She just showed you what kind of a person she is, and she does not come out looking very nice. Someone who cares so little about a pet is not someone I would want in my life. Walk away.

So you're back on the dating apps, then?

Oh, and you've just got yourself a rescue cat. That's nice.

(: Took me a minute to get this! Good one.

We leave our two cats alone for 2 nights, they have an automatic feeder and we leave their (large) water fountain full, plus additional large bowl of water. We come back and apart from them having a pavlovian response to the sound the feeder makes they are fine. But we always put out more food and water than they'll need (so if we somehow get delayed they won't starve) and we have family nearby with a key to the house who would go round if we were stuck. The cats also have a large litter tray each, so their toilet situation isn't gross either.

I had a friend with a long distance partner who would leave her cat up to 4 nights. But - unlike ours - he was an outdoor cat who would love to roam. No litter tray to worry about and he caught plenty of birds and mice.

A whole week though? Never. And if they were kittens? No more than a few hours
