What went through the mind of the person who thought I know a service we could provide....erase disabled children out of the school photos.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 29/03/2024 07:42

There's definitely at least on other thread on the same topic.

Sorry - it wasn't immediately obvious if so, and I must have missed it

No need to apologise - you might find the comments interesting, if the thread is still there.

Where? I not seen one and was just reading the article and thought wonder what mn would think.

I agree op can't believe they leave children out of a class photo. It's awful.

There definitely was last night.
I didn't comment on it but many did.

Seeing those little girls makes it worse somehow as they aren’t just generic ‘children.’ How could anyone not want them on a picture?

Who the hell are the 18% who think the OP is unreasonable being appalled about this?

BogRollBOGOF · 29/03/2024 08:17

I want to see photos of my child's class as they are. There's children with additional needs who've developed so far in their time at school, and part of that progress is "small things" like gradually increasing their involvement and being able to stay through whole assemblies and participate. Being on a class photo and the disruption that entails can be an acheivement to some and they deserve to be acknowledged as members of the class as they are.

SunshinDay · 29/03/2024 08:37

Op what does asn mean?

I only know what it might mean because I saw the news story.

I find it abhorrent and disgraceful.

Additional Support Needs

CarrotCake01 · 29/03/2024 09:00

I scanned the article because I was interested to hear why they had made the decision.

It sounds like the photographers did take one picture with all the pupils in but was struggling to get the ASN students to settle and stay still enough to take the picture again, so they left the frame and the rest of the class had their picture taken without them.

I must admit, I'm no expert on the subject, I don't know what the norm is here or whether it's particularly difficult and time consuming or stressful for ASN children to stay still for a class photo.

It doesn't sound like it was done maliciously as such because they don't "look a certain way" or because the school didn't want to look like they had disabled students or anything but the photographer should have been aware that some classes had disabled students that might take a little longer to settle and had time to allow for that. I guess they only have a certain amount of time to take all the class pictures and were just in a rush? 🤷🏼‍♀️

So why offer parents the choice of a picture with and without the ASN pupils?

RausageSoul · 29/03/2024 09:31

My child is of yr 3 in a mai stream school 'enhanced learning support' unit. The class they are in daily is mixed age but sometimes will get involved with the mainstream yr3 class too. As a parent, my preference would be to buy a class photo with their ELR friends rather than the yr3 they see once a month? So possibly the ask of parents choice is a bit mixed here?

OpalOP · 29/03/2024 09:15

So why offer parents the choice of a picture with and without the ASN pupils?

I think there were probably just 2 pictures taken. One had the special needs students in and 1 didn't. I don't think it was being sold as the ASN version and the ASN FREE version, I think that is just someone's interpretation when looking at the image.

Like, when my daughter had her preschool shots taken, there were a few to choose from. I guess the children are more wiggly at that age so each parent would probably just want to pick the image where their child was clearest.

In that example, none of the other children were removed but from the article, the ASN children were still in one of the class pictures, they just weren't in both. So the parents that had disabled children in the class, could still buy a group shot with their child in if they wanted.

Rainyspringflowers · 29/03/2024 09:36

I don’t think that explanation makes sense. One of the girls is in a wheelchair.

MattQ · 29/03/2024 14:45

This company has been substandard and expensive for too long and this is the final straw,my daughter is sen at mainstream school we've had issues before and never purchased any photos we must stop these ever entering schools again, the must know sen children need more time and patience but obviously it's not making money quick enough.Stop tempest entering schools again .
