If somebody said this phrase to you about themselves, what would you take that to mean?

"I'm one of God's all time favourites"

I'm just curious because I heard this recently and wasn't sure what the person meant, but it sparks something really negative inside me for some reason.

For more context I'm not religious, and this person is and does practice.

If someone said that to me and I were the sort of person like you, who felt unsettled by the statement, I would tell myself to get hold of a firm grip and accept that there are things I do not understand and never will. These things are therefore not meant for my comprehension and have no bearing on my life or thoughts whatsoever. I would then exhale and do my best to avoid engaging with anyone who may cause me similar distress unwittingly or otherwise.

Thing is, I've heard similar sentiments in music and from a few people in various contexts so was able to understand what they meant by the phrase in the context which they said it. If that didn't apply to you in your circumstances, then all it means is that you didn't understand what they meant.

No I didn't understand, I thought that was clear by my initial question asking for opinions? I'm not trying to stir anything up if that's what you mean. I genuinely didn't understand but now I have the understanding it's a common Christian 'joke', probably meant for Christian circles and maybe this was a case of somebody not reading the room

Isn't this the opening line of the Pope's address from his balacony every Wednesday?

Of course it will be in Latin so it may not be obvious to everyone that he says this.

Oh now this IS Interesting! Thanks for sharing

I spend a lot of time in the US/speaking to US clients for work and I've heard this kind of thing before. It's usually said to mean 'I've been so lucky with X' and in my experience it's more tongue in cheek/joking than a serious proclamation? I hope anyway! I've never heard it said completely seriously.

For more context it was said to a group of people, in a 'tell us about yourself' type scenario. "hi, I'm Sally. I like golf, theatre and going to church. I like to think of myself as one of God's all time favourites"

And that was kind of it. Nobody laughed, but then it wasnt a Christian group so I imagine others were confused by the statement
