If somebody said this phrase to you about themselves, what would you take that to mean?

"I'm one of God's all time favourites"

I'm just curious because I heard this recently and wasn't sure what the person meant, but it sparks something really negative inside me for some reason.

For more context I'm not religious, and this person is and does practice.

OP posts:

Is this a Trump thread?

purpleme12 · 28/03/2024 21:34

Never heard it before
But maybe it means they've got a charmed life/are really lucky/things are going well for them?

Hurukan · 28/03/2024 21:34

Wasn't Job one of gods favourites ? I might have been tempted to casually mention that 🤔

Changeandagoodrest · 28/03/2024 21:37

I say stuff like this all the time. But my evidence is solid. Do you know how many times I've gotten a parking space in the ideal spot when it's busy and raining. If that's not proof that Jesus not only loves me but I'm a firm favourite then I don't know what is.

I'm being facetious though. I don't actually think he loves me more (despite evidence to the contrary) and I don't think people who have been less lucky than me are loved less or less of a favourite. But on that same note if you're constantly getting shitting parking spaces I'd be rethinking how you're living your life if I were you.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 28/03/2024 21:39

it's a popular jokey phrase with young people.

someone on tiktok, for example, will have naturally long thick and bouncy hair and another will comment 'how does it feel to be god's favourite?'.

shenandoahvalley · 28/03/2024 21:41

If they’re especially pious, I might take it as a joke. If not, they’re just batshit.

MissBattleaxe · 28/03/2024 21:46

I thought it was a quote from Trump!

Rudolftheorange · 28/03/2024 21:51

I’m a Christian. I would take it as a joke, like they know obviously God doesn’t have favourites. It’s a bit like an adult child sending a mother’s card “from your favourite son”.

ManchesterGirl2 · 28/03/2024 21:54

Desecratedcoconut · 28/03/2024 21:08

I mean, if someone said it tongue in cheek for comedic purpose, I could laugh at the narcissistic hyperbole. But if a stranger whispered it to me on a plane I'd be having a having a word with the cabin crew.

It might be a good thing to be on a plane with one of God's favourites. Less risk of a plane crash.

jackstini · 28/03/2024 21:56

I would be a bit 🙄
God doesn't have any favourites!
He loves us all the same? Completely unconditionally

Swoopy · 28/03/2024 22:12

From someone who is religious but not nutty I’d take it as a jokey play on the idea that we are all infinitely beloved to God.

merlotmerlin · 28/03/2024 22:29

I am a Christian and I hope it wan't seriously meant. As pps have already said that have been fortunate in catching a train/ buying the last shirt in the favourite colour / avoiding a puddle.
If it was a serious point of view I might look for a chance to challenge them.

People die all the time, many of them devoted to one of the many forms of god that exist.

TheSolstices · 28/03/2024 22:32

Unless the person was demonstrably of low intelligence, I’d assume it was being said sarcastically, after a baby had just projectile puked on them.

powershowerforanhour · 28/03/2024 22:33

😂

Mistymist · 28/03/2024 22:46

I would be pissed off. It is a very smug thing to say. I know someone who would say that and when shit hit the fan she didn't understand what she was downgraded to "least favourite". Delusional!

SidewaysOtter · 28/03/2024 22:47

Depends who it is. If she’s the Virgin Mary then she might have a point…

MouseMinge · 28/03/2024 22:48

I thought this was going to be a Trump thread because he's one of the few people I can imagine saying this with a straight - if bum-mouthed - face.

Atethehalloweenchocs · 28/03/2024 23:40

I would think narcissism.

HeIsRisen · 28/03/2024 23:43

Purplemmonkey · 28/03/2024 21:29

Ah I see... That kind of makes sense. If it's some kind of inside joke it definitely seems less sinister!

It really isn't an inside joke. As a Christian, I'd assume they were part of a cult to be honest.

buffetbuffalo · 28/03/2024 23:43

it's just a twitter (I refuse to call it X) and tiktok trend OP!
Anybody who says it seriously is delulu 😉

Catsmere · 28/03/2024 23:51

Only person I can imagine saying it seriously is Trump!

ETA I see several posters beat me to it! 😄

blacksax · 28/03/2024 23:56

Anyone saying something as smug as that (and actually believing it) probably has a screw loose.

GirlInTheMirror27 · 29/03/2024 00:14

I separated from ex because of this. He thought and still thinks he is God's first born.

Dollenganger333 · 29/03/2024 00:16

Catza · 28/03/2024 20:25

The person has delusions of grandeur is my only thought.

This. Probably a narcissist.
