Payday blunder on BH

kcchiefette · 28/03/2024 18:54

Want to know am I missing something here?

I assumed today was the last banking/working day of the month as tomorrow is a BH and then its the weekend.

I havent been paid my salary today.

Queried with HR (who are based in India) as a few others are quite upset as their DD have failed and some need it for mortgage payments.
HR have told me not to worry - it'll be paid on Saturday as its the closest date to 31st "as per contract".

My contract states we get paid "in or around 31st of each month" and an additional stipulation to say "the last banking day of each month".

So to me, Friday isnt a banking day. Saturday isnt a banking day. So the last banking day this month was today.

Luckily, I have enough to "live on" until after BH weekend, but not enough to do the activities I had planned such as taking DS out for dinner, going to the farm and going to a car show on Monday. I literally have enough for food, petrol and maybe some cheap treats like ice cream etc.

Apparently, the boss will try and make payments tonight.

Has anyone know if a bank transfer will be processed on a BH or Saturday?

Also I am so angry with my employer as I think they are blatantly lying about it to cover their mistake. They are repeatedly telling me I am "wrong" about today being the correct pay day.

Depends - if they have faster banking then it should be immediate

PartyPlanner24 · 28/03/2024 18:58

That's weird.

My DH gets paid on the last banking day too, and his salary went in today.

LemonadePockets · 28/03/2024 18:58

It’ll likely go in Saturday as that’s not part of the bank holiday

Geebray · 28/03/2024 18:59

Are banking days even a thing any more?

Its definitely not BACS but not sure if its faster payments.

Its put me in a not so great position now. I usually have around £300 as a buffer a day before payday but I have around £100 now as paid extra for gas bill this month.

Seems like a lot for a few days but I have had to cancel events now as I couldn't afford £30 dinner, £30 for car show on top of £20 petrol and having money for food.

Its a nightmare.

Yeah I had assumed it would have been today also, as most of my colleagues also thought.

Depends on how you get paid. If they have the option of faster payments (DHs company use these) then these can happen on any days including weekends and bank holidays.

Thecatisboss · 28/03/2024 19:05

I get paid last working day of the month and got paid today.

Tiswa · 28/03/2024 19:07

I haven’t either assumed it was because it isn’t a bank holiday everywhere and mine is a global company (not really based in UK anymore) though having looked at it banks in India are open on Sunday as well
i suspect it could be as late as Sunday then

TheFairyCaravan · 28/03/2024 19:08

DH gets paid on the last day of the month and his pension goes in on the first day, it all went in today. I personally think you’re right.

Anxiouslump · 28/03/2024 19:08

I get paid last banking day and was paid today too.

alloalloallo · 28/03/2024 19:08

I do the payroll at work and paid everyone today. It’s the last working day of the month for us as we’re closed now until Tuesday.

I pay everyone by normal bank transfer rather than BACS so it’s pretty much instant.

Mrsttcno1 · 28/03/2024 19:09

If the company is based in India then I wouldn’t have assumed our UK bank holidays really mean anything unfortunately.

likepebblesonabeach · 28/03/2024 19:10

Your colleagues DD's shouldn't have been collected today, all DD's and standing orders that were due to go out over the bank holiday will always be collected the next working day never earlier so if they have went out today they were due on the 28th and have went out correctly.

ShaunaSadeki · 28/03/2024 19:11

I get paid last Friday of the month so assumed it would be last week but it was today. It totally sounds like they didn’t know tomorrow was a BH and are now trying to cover up

Its a UK based company but our HR and payroll staff are based in India

They did admit to forgetting tomorrow was a BH but then said it would be paid on Saturday. But Saturday isnt the last working/banking day. They have told me I am wrong. A simple google search would let them know that they are indeed wrong.

So infuriating. I could sympathise if they admitted their error but I literally feel gaslit by them at this stage.

Yeah I'd definitely expect to have been paid today. But if our payday falls on a weekend we get paid on the Friday, do you normally get paid on a Saturday if payday falls on a Saturday? If not I'd fail to see why you would this month

Nope every other month we have been paid on the weekday, never the Saturday.

Which is why I think they are BS me 😂

Doesn't matter where payroll is based the employment contract is in the UK so employer is in breach of contract if they don't pay as per whatever stated. And 'last banking day of each month' definitely means today in the UK.

OP I'd be very cross. One of my employers once had a massive payroll stuff up and lots of staff weren't paid. The Finance Director authorised immediate bank transfers for the following day as it's not acceptable to leave people out of pocket, less alone over a bank hol. We also refunded any overdraft fees or costs incurred due to late payments of bills/debts.

Is there any way you can get a free temporary overdraft to be repaid as soon as salary goes in?Just to let you do the things planned for Easter. Sounds like you don't use one at the moment. My bank allows £250 OD without any fees.

ohtowinthelottery · 28/03/2024 19:23

DH's payroll messed up and noone got paid on Christmas eve once. They did not get paid until the 1st working day after Boxing day.
I'm expecting a payment due on 31st March which I haven't yet received. I'm pretty certain I won't get it until now until 2nd April.

Sparklesocks · 28/03/2024 19:24

We get paid on the 26th every month. If the 26th falls on a weekend or a bank holiday we get paid the Friday before. I would expect the same for you, but sounds like they’re doubling down.

Zanatdy · 28/03/2024 19:26

I get paid last working day of month and got paid today, which is correct. Hope you get it but I wouldn’t bank on it (no pun intended)

Its upsetting as DS has autism so change etc is difficult for him. He needs his days planned, so I already have let him know what we are doing each day. If I tell him we aren't, he will have a meltdown.

I am dont have any "solid" plans until Saturday so I am reserving myself until then on the chance the wage is sent by tomorrow or Saturday morning.

I'll still take him out tomorrow - but likely for lunch instead, so he can have a treat and I will have a coffee and lunch at home.

I have savings I can dip into if needs be - the money I need is there, but its not something I really want to do as a lot of expenditure this month (I have a holiday at end of the month and school trips to pay for)

I am furious and I have requested we have a meeting about it after Easter and think about setting up a solid "pay calendar" with the pay days.
