Payday blunder on BH

kcchiefette · 28/03/2024 18:54

Want to know am I missing something here?

I assumed today was the last banking/working day of the month as tomorrow is a BH and then its the weekend.

I havent been paid my salary today.

Queried with HR (who are based in India) as a few others are quite upset as their DD have failed and some need it for mortgage payments.
HR have told me not to worry - it'll be paid on Saturday as its the closest date to 31st "as per contract".

My contract states we get paid "in or around 31st of each month" and an additional stipulation to say "the last banking day of each month".

So to me, Friday isnt a banking day. Saturday isnt a banking day. So the last banking day this month was today.

Luckily, I have enough to "live on" until after BH weekend, but not enough to do the activities I had planned such as taking DS out for dinner, going to the farm and going to a car show on Monday. I literally have enough for food, petrol and maybe some cheap treats like ice cream etc.

Apparently, the boss will try and make payments tonight.

Has anyone know if a bank transfer will be processed on a BH or Saturday?

Also I am so angry with my employer as I think they are blatantly lying about it to cover their mistake. They are repeatedly telling me I am "wrong" about today being the correct pay day.

I mean, I don't think you're wrong. My wages have always been paid on the Friday when official pay day fell on a weekend.
And with tomorrow being a BH, I'd have assumed the payment would have been today too.

Some companies can get money moving on a Saturday though so fingers crossed!

Tumbleweed101 · 28/03/2024 19:29

We are paid last day of month regardless of if it is a weekend or Bank Holiday. I half wondered if it might be today but it hasn't arrives yet so most likely be Saturday.

LlynTegid · 28/03/2024 19:30

I think it is a mistake by your company, and hope that this is acknowledged when you speak to them next week. Though no bank holidays for the rest of the year on the 31st, fortunately.

Two of our suppliers I deal with are based outside the UK, and I know how to check when they have bank holidays so as not to arrange calls. It is not that difficult. There are parts of India with a significant Christian population in any case.

OhmygodDont · 28/03/2024 19:30

We are paid last working day of the month so today but I did yesterday have a little oh shit will it be Saturday even though I’ve never been paid on a weekend but technically the banks open Saturday isn’t it 😬

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 28/03/2024 19:33

I was paid today.
I'm paid last working day of each month

Jellycatspyjamas · 28/03/2024 19:38

I have savings I can dip into if needs be - the money I need is there, but its not something I really want to do as a lot of expenditure this month (I have a holiday at end of the month and school trips to pay for)

Given your son struggles with changes to plans, I’d take £100 or whatever out of savings and repay it when you get paid. The money will be spent either way so does it matter if you use your salary to pay for the treats directly or to top up your savings that paid for the treats.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d be livid about the delayed pay day, but if I had a way to continue with my holiday plans I’d do that.

Bournetilly · 28/03/2024 19:38

I think you are right especially since they have admitted to forgetting tomorrow is a bank holiday. If you don’t get it Saturday will it be next working day so Tuesday? If so I’d just use your savings and put the money back when you get paid (since you already planned to spend money on these things).

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/03/2024 19:40

One of my part-time roles has sent me a payslip saying I got paid yesterday. I'm actually getting paid on Tuesday. It's fecking annoying but at least I don't depend on it.

Justwingingit2005 · 28/03/2024 19:42

Last day of the month payday normally. I got paid today.

CanNeverThinkOfAName · 28/03/2024 19:43

UK banks don’t process transfers on weekends or bank hols so I doubt anyone will get paid until Tuesday unless employer is going to do direct transfers into everyone’s bank accounts individually which still may not transfer straight away dependent on which banks are used.

Ilovemyshed · 28/03/2024 19:44

I don't see the issue. Banking is pretty immediate 24/7 now.

Onabench · 28/03/2024 19:46

Why are DD bouncing, if you wouldn't usually have been paid by now? That doesn't make sense. Usually DD that are due on BH, go out after. We haven't even hit bank holidays yet.

Wait until Saturday. I would never make assumptions on an early pay as banks are pretty much 7 days a week now.

Tweetlebeetles · 28/03/2024 19:50

I get paid the last day of the month and if that's a BH or weekend it's the next working day, so I'm not paid until Tuesday.

A PP stated it's against employment law but that's not correct. They are covered by the 'on or around' the end of the month in the contact so it doesn't break employment law. But I can completely understand the frustration!

Dagnabit · 28/03/2024 20:48

I understand you’re cross about the payday cock up but don’t understand why you’re reluctant to use your savings because “you have a lot of expenditure” because you can just replace it when you get your salary and you’d end up spending the same, surely?

MumblesParty · 28/03/2024 20:51

I get paid at the end of the month, and i got paid today.

OP if you’ve got money in savings, and you were going to spend some of your wages on trips out this weekend, why not take the money out of your savings and then put it straight back in when you’re paid. Then you’re budget neutral. It’s seems a shame to have your Easter weekend spoiled due to an admin error.

Crossed post!
Agree.

This.
I would be cross too, but don't understand why you would make things worse by cancelling everything.

Lovemycat2023 · 28/03/2024 20:58

I’ve never had pay go in on a Saturday- not being paid monthly or weekly. I’d be surprised if it actually goes in, although it might be shown as “pending”. They’ve clearly got it wrong - have a word with your union rep if you’ve got one.

This.

We had similar when we once got paid 8 hours late. We normally get paid on 25th, or the Friday before if that’s a weekend. It got to lunch time on the Friday 24th and we hadn’t been paid yet and there was absolute uproar about people being in their overdraft and direct debits bouncing. Except it wasn’t even our contracted pay day yet, so why would you have set DDs up to to the day before you get paid and then complain you don’t have enough money to pay them?!

As it happens, we were all paid by 7pm so no drama.

I think people try it in and exaggerate when things like this happen.

But to OP, take it out of savings then put it back in when you get paid and you’re in the same position as if you’d been paid today (minus 4 days interest). And get a credit card in case of a similar emergency in future.

FleetwoodMacAttack · 28/03/2024 21:01

This happens more often than employers like to admit. Payroll is often wrong especially unfortunately if it’s outsourced.

I presume you’ve not got a credit card to tide you over.

it’s a cautionary tale to always have a few days’ grace before rent/mortgage direct debits are triggered post pay day.

I get paid last working day of the month and got paid today.

This & Same

PheobeBebe · 28/03/2024 21:25

I completed a pay run at work today (not payroll) and was still offered Friday and Monday as clearing dates. Hopefully your pay will come through OP

mitogoshi · 28/03/2024 21:55

Mines not gone in yet either, but as their account is NatWest too it's gone in on weekends before.

Anonymous2025 · 28/03/2024 22:46

That’s odd ! Any risk of the company being in trouble financially?

no if its the 25th falls on a Sat it goes into your bank account around 4am the 24th it that's the way it works in banking. someone f upped there in payroll a d didn't do their job properly. i would be fuming too. if dd etc fall on a weekend a bank can take it out the last week day before
if pay day falls on a weekend it's paid on the last work day before the weekend. for some banks if pay day falls on a Monday can be in your account the Saturday as transactions are completed by cob of the weekday.
