Hedgehog or hat bobble - were they having a laugh?

I’m struggling to imagine getting a pom-Pom and a hedgehog mixed up . Maybe in the dark, but as soon as you picked it up surely it would be obvious it’s not a hedgehog because even a sick or dead hedgehog would not feel soft and woolly? AIBU that no one would be this ridiculous, and whoever took a pompom to a vet was doing it for laughs/publicity?

I agree - saw the article today and had to check it wasn't April 1st. How could someone make that mistake? I call BS!

coxesorangepippin · 27/03/2024 20:45

Unbelievable

Did she not poke it??

Sparklesocks · 27/03/2024 20:47

It made me laugh 😄

ChurchOfSeitan · 27/03/2024 20:53

There was a thread on here years ago where the OP thought her cat had brought in a baby animal of some sort so she spent the night trying to nurse it back to health. It turned out to be a random object although I forgot what it was. The OP didn’t have her glasses on hence why she thought it was an animal…

5foot5 · 27/03/2024 20:54

DD sent me a link to this story last night 😊

I suppose it is possible she didn't actually handle it with her bare hands for fear of damaging it.

Reminds me of the Specsavers advert where the vet is treating a fur hat!

Cleaningupthemess · 27/03/2024 21:02

5foot5. Maybe that ad was their inspiration. Even if the person didn’t handle it and scooped it up with something, surely it would feel too light to be a hedgehog. Beyond the first fleeting glance, I’m struggling to see how you would reach the point where a trip to the vet seemed like a logical next step 🫣

I agree. What a load of bollocks. No-one could be that stupid once they picked it up. People will post any old shit for likes.

PassingStranger · 27/03/2024 21:31

Ha ha.

But most people know the weight difference. A pom pom weighs almost nothing. A baby hedgehog has a bit of weight!

Springisroundthecorner · 28/03/2024 06:06

Saw it on bbc website and thought April Fool was on monday!? 🦔

Justleaveitblankthen · 28/03/2024 06:07

Not a chance in hell this story is genuine.

AnonyLonnymouse · 28/03/2024 06:09

There was a rather brilliant post on here a few years back where someone had stopped traffic to help a hedgehog across the road.

It turned out to be an old scrubbing brush.

But to save face they still helped it across the road…😂

Not a chance in hell this story is genuine.

You'd think that but the vet was interviewed on the radio and unless he was a fantastic actor he sounded totally genuine

I don't know how it ended up as national news though, must have been a really sloooooow day wherever it started

Gravelgraze · 28/03/2024 06:23

I saw this discussed on bbc breakfast programme yesterday morning. Then they encouraged viewers to phone in with their stories . It must have been a slow news day as they spent several minutes on it. Sally Nugent was in kinks of uncontrollable laughter while her side kick read them out.

She’d just about pulled herself together when someone texted to say they stopped the traffic to get out to what they thought was a hedgehog on the middle of the road. But when they got out they realised it was horse poo. To save face they lifted it anyway and placed it in the grass verge and received a round of applause from the other drivers for their kindness to hedgehogs .

Hmm, two stories about hedgehogs crossing the road now, sounds like an urban myth to me

The premise of seeing a "hedgehog" and stopping traffic is in unbelievable once never mind twice

I think so.

This has honestly happened to me. I was driving home from the pub late one night when a policeman (walking) flagged me down very quickly. I of course, started to panic thinking I had done something wrong, but he walked into the road, scooped up a hedgehog and waved me on 🥰.

LakeTiticaca · 28/03/2024 07:44

It made people smile
That's all that really matters

Perfectlystill · 28/03/2024 07:46

Agree total nonsense. I thought less of the publishers who ran the story. Taking their audiences for fools.

Misthios · 28/03/2024 07:49

I think it was a publicity thing to raise awareness and funds for the wildlife centre.

5foot5 · 28/03/2024 08:45

Thing is, you wouldn't expect to see baby hedgehogs at this time of year anyway. The hedgehogs will be barely out of hibernation just yet. I haven't had any in the garden yet but am expecting to in the next week or so if previous year's are anything to go by.

They usually have a first litter about June I think and sometimes a second litter in September.

So it would be odd indeed to see a hoglet right now

If you're daft enough to think a bobble is a hedgehog, you're not going to be up to speed with hedgehog breeding patterns.

Saisong · 28/03/2024 09:06

The placing of that newspaper headline in the photo inclines me to thinking it is a hoax (besides the obvious general hogshittery)

ItsMoo · 28/03/2024 09:07

Unbelievable but it made me laugh. Reminds me of when a family member took her dog to the vet around Christmas time because of a "growth" on dogs bum.

Turns out dog had sat on a quality street and it had melted to its arse 😅
