If you didn’t need the childcare? Setting open 730-630.

What do you mean if you didn't need the childcare?

My DD gets picked up 5:05pm

TheHorneSection · 27/03/2024 15:19

When 5yo DC was in after school club after DC2 was born, I picked them up about 5.30, after tea was finished

JacquesHarlow · 27/03/2024 15:19

Surely anyone who uses childcare, "needs" the childcare to some degree, otherwise they wouldn't...

agh, I give up.

I presume from this you mean,

What time do people pick up, who don't need the full time allocation (07:30 - 1830) and who have a reason to bring their child back that doesn't involve work or commitments.

So if you work 9-5 then obviously they have to be in childcare from about 845-515 depending on your commute but if you don’t need it because you’re at work when is reasonable to drop off / collect?

Did you really, honestly, not understand @JacquesHarlow ?

If I have a day off and still send my kids to nursery I usually pick them up about 5pm after they've had their dinner etc but not too late that I feel guilty. 7.30 til 6.30 would be such a long day. Mine do 8.15am til 5.30pm usually which is long enough.

Geranium1984 · 27/03/2024 15:22

When I was on mat leave with dd2, my son was in nursery 3 days per week, so I could choose what time to collect him.

I usually picked him up as they were finishing their tea, which was about 4.30pm

fuckingbastard · 27/03/2024 15:25

The exact same time that I usually pick them up. No mercy. I suppose that you will have all kind of other hats on your "day off". Children like routine, there is no point in messing that up. Apart from if you have an activity set up on a routinely basis that will take care of this extra time.

I used to put my DS in one day a week when I was on maternity leave so I could get to a regular appointment and just have time to myself. We had no family nearby to help out so this was my alternative. He was still a baby (started doing this from 6 months old) so I used to do 9:30/10am-4pm although we paid for 8-6. DS is now almost 2 and DH now works late shift so is home every morning till about 1pm. We dropped DS down to afternoons only 3 days a week as DH has him in mornings. 2 days a week we still put him in the full days even though we don’t need childcare those mornings, it gives DH time to relax. On those days we do take him in for about 8:45/9am. They stop serving breakfast about 9:30 so always make sure he’s in by then! If we both worked full days he’d be in by 8am.

Lavender14 · 27/03/2024 15:26

I'm not totally sure I understand either but I think what you're asking is if you aren't in work when would you drop off?

I don't work a Friday but our nursery charges the same for 5 days as 4 days. I drop ds off around 8.30/9 to keep with routine and then either collect him after nap and we'll do something fun, or I'm doing life admin and will collect him about 3.30/4. Sometimes I'll just keep him with me for the day.

If I'm working i drop him off in line with the time I'd need to leave the nursery for my commute.

TotoroElla · 27/03/2024 15:28

At my DD's nursery school the core hours were 9-4.15 and you could add on care from 8 until 5.30.

Some DC just did mornings 9-12.30 or afternoons 1-4.

I didn't need childcare so I didn't use it. Is that what you mean?

Hoplolly · 27/03/2024 15:34

We have until 6.30pm, but I normally collect around 5pm. Can drop at 7.30am, I normally drop between 8-8.30am. If for whatever reason I am not working he'd still be in at those times because I am paying £70 a day for it!

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 27/03/2024 15:35

Open 7:30-6.
On office days drop off c7:30 to beat traffic, pick up c5-5:15
WFH days where we have more flex drop off c8am, pick up c:5:15-5:30, the later end if she has her best friends in with her as she wants as much play time as possible.
If i have a day off on a school day i'll still follow WFH day timings.

Azzzz · 27/03/2024 15:40

I aim for drop off between 820-845 then pick up between 4-430 but the mum guilt always kicks in around 3 😂

How long is a piece of string Grin

Are you a childcare provider looking to gauge demand?

Are you a parent trying to figure out how much childcare people will judge you for using?

Surely it's going to depend why someone has chosen to use the childcare, what fits into their budget and their child's routine etc?

NavyPeer · 27/03/2024 15:45

My DD does 2 short days a week - 9am - 3pm. She is 2.

i only need about 6 hours a week uninterrupted for focus work (I work veeeeery part time) and any extra as protected time for studying, appointments, less stressful deep cleans of the house, if me and DH want a random day date

That’s already plenty for me. I sometimes pick her up early if we are meeting a friend in the afternoon.

i don’t really ‘need’ childcare. But I’d rather have evenings with DH than be working into the night after a long day of parenting whilst he wrangles her into bed. it’s also no good if work needs to be done and she sleep refuses or wakes up!!

WhereIsMyLight · 27/03/2024 15:47

If I have a day off, I’d usually keep them there until they’ve had their tea so 4.30 ish. I don’t like keeping them there until 6 when I’m working because they are so, so tired when picked up but that’s not much I can do. 4.30 is a good balance between having the day to myself, then having a good day at nursery and tea but not being so tired when they come home.

hottchocolate · 27/03/2024 15:53

do you mean on a day off or people who don't work

I usually put DC in 8-6 or thereabouts (sometimes 8:30 to 5:45) when working but if I have a day off I usually leave DC there until about 5. It depends what I'm doing. I think it's fine for them to be there the full day even you're not working or enjoying some free time.

hottchocolate · 27/03/2024 15:54

Otherwise as PP says I am mindful of when they have dinner (4ish) so would go around 4/4:30

Apollo365 · 27/03/2024 15:54

18:29

Malarandras · 27/03/2024 15:56

Back when this was a concern for me I picked them up as late as possible. I worked and had a husband who did nothing so so needed every minute to do chores. Or maybe just get 5 minutes peace. The kids were and are absolutely fine.

MammaTill2Pojkar · 27/03/2024 16:06

Drop off 9.15 1 day, 8.30 2 days a week and pick up around 1.40 all 3 days but then he only qualifies for 15 free hours a week and I have timed his drop offs and pick ups for just after his older brother starts and finishes school each day so I'm not doing 3/4 trips a day. I don't work but he does need childcare for socialising and language learning.

ClonedSquare · 27/03/2024 16:13

My son goes two days a week while I'm not working. I collect him between 4 and 4:30.

Even though the standard day runs 8-6, when he was in the baby room (and I worked) he was often the only one there after 5:30 which felt sad. I don't know if it's the same in his current room but since I can pick him up early I do.

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/03/2024 16:17

When my son was in nursery I worked 9-5.30, WFH so no commute, 10 mins drive to nursery. I picked up at about 6.10 usually, giving me half an hour to do some housework, prep dinner, or just sit in silence staring at the wall while I composed myself.

He loved being one of the last ones picked up because he got to play with what he wanted and had more attention from the key workers. If I picked up early when there's nursery was still busy, he'd complain 😂

I really miss that half hour break now he's at school and childminder who closes earlier.
