If you didn’t need the childcare? Setting open 730-630.

And honestly sometimes it was closer to 6.30. I didn't like him being last particularly, but there was always a little group there to the end with combined rooms after 5.30.

So he was at nursery 8.50ish to 6.10ish. Yes, a long day.. but he loved it, was used to it, and used to ask to go to nursery on weekends. He gets far more tired from Reception, I've no idea why but I guess nursery is just play with a lot of support, whereas school is learning and being more independent with fewer caregivers around.

HAF1119 · 27/03/2024 16:24

I was working until 3pm (a bit later now he's older) and picking up 3.15, realised when I was getting him we were not getting quality time as he wanted attention, and I needed to get dinner sorted. I changed to 4pm just to have things ready and organised so I could actually give full attention when he got home and have food ready etc. it did make things a lot better. He quite often does later now and I work later now but he's out of nursery and a bit older

Sprogonthetyne · 27/03/2024 16:30

When I was a sahm and DD had 15 funded hours, she went 5 hours, 3 days a week. 9.30 until 2.30, so I dropped of after taking older sibling to school, and picked up then went on to school.

AustraliaTrip · 27/03/2024 16:35

9-1 here for a few mornings and then 9-3 when they started to offer that in the run up to school.

The time before school goes so quickly so we'd do farm parks swimming etc and made the most of it.

When I started work I finished at 4 so picked them up 4.15.

Get home between 4/4:30 and then go and collect between 5 and 5:30.

Same 😂

WithACatLikeTread · 27/03/2024 16:44

As late as possible.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 27/03/2024 16:45

I use the full hours i'm paying for, so if pick up is 6:30, i'll be there at 6:25

cordeliachaseatemyhandbag · 27/03/2024 16:47

I used my full time.

If I'm paying for it I feel like it's a waste to not use it.

I don’t really understand why we as a society think 10-12 hour nursery days are the norm and ‘absolutely fine’. I love hanging out with my friends, but I can’t imagine the emotional toll it would take being forced to do that for 10-11 hours up to 5 days a week.

Our childcare is open 7:30-6. My daughter does 8-4:30, which is still a long day.

I’ve worked in childcare… the children know it’s a long day, and everyone is flagging come 4pm. I completely understand some parents have no choice… but if you do and you’re choosing an 11 or 12 hour day for your child I’d really consider if you’d fancy doing the same yourself.

Azzzz · 27/03/2024 17:04

It’s a reasonable point @Lenor

We do two days a week roughly 830-430. Which still feels long. I’m finding the evenings a struggle so have this inner turmoil of wanting to pick up as best for child and wanting to postpone as best for me!

I pick up at same time as usual. Once I collected early but then dc was pretty upset when I went back to usual time.

Tumbleweed101 · 27/03/2024 17:17

Parents not using us for wraparound care usually do the 9-3 slot, others may pick up about 4 after getting older children from school. It only tends to be the parents who need childcare for work reasons who keep them with us after 4.30 (when we serve tea). So I'd say 8.30-4 is probably the most likely and the longest hours people do without having a need for childcare for work reasons.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 27/03/2024 17:18

DS is at school now but at nursery he went 9-5 ish Tuesday and Thursday and until 3:30 on Fridays (he started off doing 1 day and two with grandparents and only went up to this the year before school started). If I was off work I didn't send him, same with DH.

crostini · 27/03/2024 17:18

I don't work and I usually pick my eldest up from preschool at 3:30. They go everyday. I'm a different country, where preschool is basically mandatory tho. I could pick her up earlier, but it woke better for my other 2 children's timing with their naps and lunch

Scottishskifun · 27/03/2024 17:23

So our full day sessions are 7.30 til 5.30 in reality they go in between 8.30 and 9 and pick up between 4.30 and 5ish.

We also use flexible working so 2 days a week they are "school time" of 9-3pm.

Would caveat it with we both mostly wfh so take it in turns to be the early starter for work so can finish early. It works well until 1 of us is away for work occasionally then we use flexi time to cover the deficit.

professionalnomad · 27/03/2024 17:24

I'm on mat leave this year but my daughter still goes to kindergarten 5 days a week - 9am - 3pm. She loves it and I enjoy having time at home to spend with the baby and get the chores done. I feel no guilt at all.

Caspianberg · 27/03/2024 17:28

They do morning only or all day here.
Ds has morning slot which is 7am-12.30. We aim to drop him at 8am, and collect at 12. He has lunch at home.

I do work part time, but that’s enough usually for us. Often I start work early at 6am (from home) and dh does morning routine and drop off. Then I collect at lunchtime

NewName24 · 27/03/2024 18:05

I think the answers to this are going to be different, depending on what you are asking.

'If you are a SAHP and your child has some Nursery sessions, what hours do they do?'
Or,
'If you are on maternity leave, have you left their hours the same?'

Is very different from

'If you finish early one day, or are using up some AL, do you collect at normal time or go and get them early (or drop them off late?'

Justploddingonandon · 27/03/2024 18:06

When I was on maternity leave DS still did a couple of days in nursery and I aimed for about 5 (DS still went in for 8 so DH could drop off as DD was a terrible sleeper so not having to be up for that was good). Never before 4.30 so he'd be finished with tea and once DD started eating tea was sometimes a little later as she was a really slow eater.

CremeEggThief · 27/03/2024 18:08

YABU to wonder or care about what others would do in this situation.

What relevance has that to you and your own circumstances? 🤔

Azzzz · 27/03/2024 19:00

I’ve liked reading the answers

scrivette · 27/03/2024 19:29

I finish at 5 and After School club finishes at 6, it takes me 5 minutes to walk there. I leave home at 5:30 which gives me just enough time to do a quick tidy of the kitchen or sort out/plan dinner.

If I am on leave for the day and they are in childcare (rarely happens) then I pick them up at another 5:50 - trying to maximise my time off!

archerzz · 27/03/2024 20:26

9-3.

TrudyProud · 27/03/2024 20:42

I'm on maternity leave so technically don't need the childcare but I still drop her off at 8am -5pm (I could pick her at 6pm).
