Neighbour wants to replace MY fence, I don’t want them to!

We have recently had new neighbours move in next door. A month ago they said that they would like to replace all of the fences around their garden (sides and back) which includes replacing mine. They said they will pay for this as they want their garden to look uniform. At first I was on board with this, actually quite pleased at the thought of having a brand new fence as mine is quite old, however they have now said they will be replacing my current 4ft fence with a 6ft fence instead.

I have told them I do not want them to replace my fence with anything higher than 4 ft. They’ve now said that in that case, instead of replacing my fence, they will just build another fence against mine in their garden. So basically, I will retain my current fence, then there will be another in their garden, but I will have double fences on my side! Is this even allowed?

@OhmygodDont I am! How did you guess that!

It's great!

Need a good shower after all the sand and water from boarding. I’m thinking of getting into sups this year. The children all have wetsuits and body boards.

If they’re that kind of neighbour they I bet they could.. I can just see moaning because they see you naked from their bedroom window - sounds like a Daily Mail story!! 😂

Imagine the headline

My neighbour won’t stop flashing their tits… tit neighbour says other neighbour rejected 6ft fence so don’t look…. The battle
continues 😂😂

LadyAroundTown · 27/03/2024 20:32

We’re having new neighbours soon. I would love them forever if they did this!

Every other garden here has 4ft fences, it has a real community feel. They will be the only ones in the row that have 6ft fences.

And? Their garden, their choice!

AhBiscuits · 27/03/2024 20:44

You should accept their offer. Most people want to be able to enjoy their garden without neighbours looking in.

It is hilarious on here as usual... glad I have lovely neighbours who would not dream of behaving like this. Yes you're all probably right you smug people but your also very unneighbourly...

Do you sit next to complete strangers on buses and insist on telling them your life story?

Ghosttofu99 · 27/03/2024 20:59

I get where you are coming from. ‘Prison’ fencing is the in thing at the mo with people putting up these hideous tall monstrosities and mega gates. Hopefully it is a fad that will fall out of fashion in a decades time like magnolia walls and grey house paint.

I've had one for 36 years, not sure it's an at the moment thing 🤔

Lots of miserable anti-social types on here as usual

I'm really not sure why it's considered 'anti-social' to want privacy in your back garden though? To me it's an extension of your house.

I'm all for having a chat in the front garden on the way in or out of the house. But as soon as I'm through that front door I want to know that no one can encroach on my peace and quiet unless I want them to!

CountingDownTheLongDays · 27/03/2024 21:09

Do consider that they might, for instance, be getting a dog, which would explain the need for a 6' fence. Many dogs can clear a 4' fence, and I presume you don't want unscheduled canine visitors.

It’s not about the privacy per se.. it’s about moving in and doing things to upset your new neighbours..we all benefit if we have good neighbours..

here’s a sad story about what happens when neighbours fall out - and this dad was out of order going into some else property but something has clearly gone for this to have escalated

Dad faces £20k bill after invading neighbours' garden to reclaim son's football

Judge Stephen Hellman said Chaim Adler, 35, was 'humiliating and intimidating' when an argument was sparked in Golders Green, north London, following the boy's stray kick

Marblessolveeverything · 27/03/2024 21:10

Why wouldn't you have a decent height fence? I don't understand anything less than 6ft. If you had a dog it would be needed to keep it secure. Or to provide your children or yourself some privacy.

I would hate the idea of paying for a back garden where I felt I had no privacy.

It doesn’t matter.

they are allowed to replace the fence with 6’ fence. If I remember rightly nothing can sit higher than 12 foot where I am. So that falls under it fine.

my mums next door neighbour built this huge outhouse thing which was 10 foot and had air con so it’s really noisy and blocks the entire garden of sun

norhing she can do

Happyandglorious98 · 27/03/2024 21:24

It’s not what u want honey it’s there garden not yours they offered you and you said no🤨

can’t use the excuse there trying to bully u

people can do what they hell they bloody want in there own gardens just because everyone else has a 4ft fence doesn’t mean they need to because it makes yours look dreadful 😂🤣

Happyandglorious98 · 27/03/2024 21:25

There’s a lot worse things going on in the world to worry about like Wars etc and your going on about a bloody 4/6ft fence

Ydkiml · 27/03/2024 21:27

They have every right to have and want privacy in their own back garden and 4 ft doesn’t give them that . They are not bullying you at all . I think your just nosey and like your own way !

Beesbeesbeesbees · 27/03/2024 21:29

You can't be serious. You are being so very unreasonable here.

Zooeyzo · 27/03/2024 21:32

I bet when they put the new fences up lots of other neighbours will rejoice and follow suit with 6 foot fences.

goingtotown · 27/03/2024 21:33

The neighbour wants privacy, are you a nosey neighbour OP?
