Neighbour wants to replace MY fence, I don’t want them to!

We have recently had new neighbours move in next door. A month ago they said that they would like to replace all of the fences around their garden (sides and back) which includes replacing mine. They said they will pay for this as they want their garden to look uniform. At first I was on board with this, actually quite pleased at the thought of having a brand new fence as mine is quite old, however they have now said they will be replacing my current 4ft fence with a 6ft fence instead.

I have told them I do not want them to replace my fence with anything higher than 4 ft. They’ve now said that in that case, instead of replacing my fence, they will just build another fence against mine in their garden. So basically, I will retain my current fence, then there will be another in their garden, but I will have double fences on my side! Is this even allowed?

They have a wide garden so they have said they will just leave a gap between my current fence and their new one.

So it will look dreadful from my side. Two fences with a half metre gap in between. It feels like I am being bullied into accepting their offer to just replace mine with a 6ft fence.

You're not being bullied, they have every right to put up a 6 foot wall for their privacy. Is your insistence that they have a 4ft wall bullying?

Every other garden here has 4ft fences, it has a real community feel. They will be the only ones in the row that have 6ft fences.

Maybe they are planning to get a dog? - Most places these days don't even consider letting you foster a dog let alone adopt unless you have an enclosed garden with 6ft high fences.

Are you one of those people who run outside as soon as a neighbour steps outside for a chat

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 20:13

@12345change you do rise that people have more than one neighbour they can turn to for the very important jobs like taking in bins?

Just saying!

The other side, across the road, number 14 etc!

It's a big world out there!

We've had this with our elderly neighbours. They rent, and their landlord had never replaced 'their' fence between our house and theirs which had collapsed 20 years ago. Yes it was nice chatting outside our front doors, and for swapping Christmas chocolates etc, but after years of zero privacy, I finally tackled them and explained that we just wanted some privacy and we would approach their landlord and pay for a new fence. They were a bit upset, but we finally feel that we can use our own garden now - our DD can sunbathe, I can sit out with a cup of tea, all without the whole road peering in. I've put a 6ft fence up. 🙂

You’re absolutely correct but personally I think that’s all a bit sad… and correlates with research that shows we are becoming lonelier as a nation. Apparently we’re in a loneliness epidemic.

I get that but I’ve got neighbours I’d take in parcels for and one I wouldn’t. All due to how they have behaved to me. One neighbour texts me got a parcel coming can you take it in. No problem hell I’ll go and stick a note on their door to say to bring it to my house.

Other neighbour is a grump sod who’s miserable and a pain. Doesn’t get favours.

If my new neighbours tried to complain about a 6ft fence on my own garden they would be in the fuck them side of things.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 27/03/2024 20:17

Yes the can on their own side and 2 mteres not 6 foot as most have stated here., fact!
End

Solidarity OP.

When I moved into mine, we had 4 foot fences. As I've got a tiny garden, we needed low fences for the sun.

My neighbour (with a massive garden) put in 6 foot fences and my tiny garden is dark and has no view now. I hate it.

But, most people these days don't want community IME, they want privacy, so I try to console myself that when Im selling, the viewers will probably like the privacy at least.

OhmygodDont · 27/03/2024 20:19

All those who want community.

Am I allowed to then put my washing out in just my pants? To sun bathe topless? To go to my pool near naked…

because that’s what I can do in my garden and if you want a 2/3/4ft fence and not my 6ft fence why should I cover up over you not agreeing to a higher fence.

They honestly will!

Living in a bungalow with a six foot fence, we also have an outside shower!

Love it!

True but we don’t know whether they have pissed the off too.. just saying

Yep you can regardless of the size of your fence as long as it’s legal .. just saying

SkyBloo · 27/03/2024 20:22

I would detest 4 foot fences. The children would constantly kick balls over, dogs would run amok and there would be no privacy.

I know that can legally just like the 6ft fence… but they can’t complain is my point if they reject my 6ft fence.

Oh you must be near a beach. I bet that’s amazing in summer.

Noyesnoyes · 27/03/2024 20:25

@12345change we could! But I reckon il right! OP like you appears to be litigious and highly strung.

@OhmygodDont I am! How did you guess that!

It's great!

If they’re that kind of neighbour they I bet they could.. I can just see moaning because they see you naked from their bedroom window - sounds like a Daily Mail story!! 😂

Step5678 · 27/03/2024 20:27

A 4ft fence sounds awful to me, don't you want privacy in your garden? Or at least understand that they want privacy in theirs?

you sound like my neighbour, she keeps trimming the hedge down to a ridiculously low height even though we've asked her to stop many times. We will be building something higher on our side just to enforce the privacy, as your neighbours will too.

Lellochip · 27/03/2024 17:16

My neighbours have this, my previous owner built our fence well within the boundary. Lucky next door.

But it's not theirs!

Haven't you tried to get it back?
