To not eat food off the office floor?

Today we had our lunch in a meeting room in the office, there were 6 of us and I dropped some chocolate on the floor. I said “oh noo” and all of them said it’s fine just eat it. I said I’m not eating food off the floor! But they were all in agreement that it’s fine because it’s not sticky food and it’s not the ground outside. They said if it was them they would just eat it.

I said but everyone has been walking in here with their shoes, which have been outside. But they were all basically laughing at me for not eating it. It was lighthearted and I’m not offended or anything but I was just wondering, how many people would eat it? I thought more people would think like me and not want to eat something that’s been dropped on the office carpet where multiple people have been walking. But I was the only one with this opinion and now I feel baffled 😂

So.. would you eat it or not?

As someone who licks food off my toddler, I’d eat it.

@Gowlett

why on earth do you do that!?

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 26/03/2024 17:40

Interesting. I've realized I changed my stance on this as of this morning! I used to be a 5 second or even 10 second rule sort of person but now I've come to the conclusion that when you think about it... literally ANYTHING could be on the floor. Even if it's a really small particle - that includes animal poo, germs, even worm eggs 😩sorry.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 26/03/2024 17:42

I’d eat it. But I have a laissez-faire approach to things like this.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 26/03/2024 17:54

I would at home if floor clean but wouldn't at work. Xx

WarshipRocinante · 26/03/2024 15:30

5 second rule 😂

This! 😂

Tbh if it looked clean enough I probably would.

Flin · 26/03/2024 19:56

I wouldn't eat it. People have walked on that floor after walking on pavements where dogs will have crapped. I don't fancy dog poo crumb Galaxy, no thanks. I prefer the one with cookie crumbs.

whiteboardking · 27/03/2024 00:08

I'd eat. Hardly contaminated and stomachs are full of acid

Jaybail · 29/03/2024 12:54

There will be germs on something that is dropped on the floor. There's germs on the hand holding the chocolate in the first place. Germs are everywhere but psychologically I wouldn't eat it from the floor either.

Emmz1510 · 29/03/2024 13:07

5 second rule, and it for me it depends on how visibly dirty the floor is. Yes I know germs aren’t visible! But if a floor looks clean I’d usually go for it. Many workplace floors look grim!

StormingNorman · 29/03/2024 13:18

Would do. Have done. Will do again. And FWIW I have a cast iron gut and immune system which I attribute to not being particularly fussed about washing salad leaves, the 10second rule etc.

Mimimimi1234 · 29/03/2024 13:18

I would eat off my own floor, not anywhere else. Yuk

Notthatcatagain · 29/03/2024 13:25

Im on a diet so chocolate is a very rare treat so I would probably eat it. Run a wet wipe over your keyboard, bet it will be filthy.

QuizNight · 29/03/2024 21:12

It would depend on the size of the piece to me. One square? Nah it can go in the bin. A whole row? That’s getting rubbed clean and then eaten.

Imisssleep2 · 30/03/2024 04:30

Food dropped on a communal floor like that or outside it's a big no from me, my floor at home where we never wear shoes inside and I know when and how it's cleaned, fine yeah I would eat it. I used to have a horse and would think nothing of having a sandwich after shoveling s* all morning probably without washing my hands 🤦🏼‍♀️ so yeah the communal floor of the office is a big no from me. Where has everyone's sense of dirt and germs gone from COVID in 2020, we all went ultra hygienic and now nothing, no wonder everyone is catching COVID again.

WarshipRocinante · 26/03/2024 15:30

5 second rule 😂

If it's chocolate it's extended to 30 seconds Grin

Niegenug · 30/03/2024 04:53

KrisAkabusi · 26/03/2024 16:52

Another 5 second ruler here. The office has a cleaner, so the floor is probably cleaner than my own!

Obviously someone who has never stayed and seen an office cleaner at work. They do not vacuum the floor ever day and when they vaccum, it is never thoroughly.

So, I would never eat anything that has been on the floor. Hell, I woudn't even eat anything that was placed directly on the desk. Why do people do that and expect me to eat it? Yuk, just yuk!

CosmosQueen · 30/03/2024 04:56

Rickrolypoly · 26/03/2024 15:55

you should have just offered it to them if they were sure they would eat it. I bet none of them would take it!

That’s what I would have done, call their bluff!

SomewhereFarAwayFromThere · 30/03/2024 05:11

I might eat something that had dropped on the office floor if I really wanted it. It wouldn’t worry me. But I wouldn’t think someone was weird for not wanting to.

JustMyView13 · 30/03/2024 17:42

Absolutely not. Those same shoes that have been outside are also worn into the lavatories. At home, absolutely ok. Away from the home. Not a chance.

Why?

Shoes have been worn on the same place if at home or on the office?

Watchkeys · 30/03/2024 18:18

Perhaps its different if it's slippers? (which go in the bathroom)

RosaBaby2 · 30/03/2024 18:19

I would probably eat it, but lots of colleagues are like you and wouldn't dream of it. Horses for courses!

Saschka · 30/03/2024 18:21

I thought I had fairly low hygiene standards, but no I definitely wouldn’t eat something that had been on the floor, at work or otherwise.

NoBunnyHome · 30/03/2024 18:22

I'd eat it off my own floor (porbably) but not an office floor

JustMyView13 · 30/03/2024 18:51

I don’t wear shoes in the house. And I am responsible for cleaning my floor so I know it’s done properly & regularly. I just think it’s gross. It’s a no from me.
