Just that, really.
Do you say "scallops" or "scollops"?

Just browsing cookbooks for menu ideas for the weekend and what should I see in a Mary Berry book! Tempted to do them after this thread.

Ooh they look good!

Scollops for the shellfish. Scallops for the delish boiling hot potato dream.

At the chippy we used to go to growing up, they was always a huge queue so you'd put in your fish & chips order and get a scallop to eat outside before they'd shout you to say the rest of the food was done.

Now that a civilised chippy. We just had to stand in the queue salavarating. Using that word could trigger another thread.

I say scollop for the seafood and scalloped for the frilled edge on fabric.

fluffycloudalert · 26/03/2024 21:51

Rhymes with dollops.

"My in-laws say Aldi like Oldi, which probably deserves a thread of its own."

@OhItsOnlyCynthia my Mum says 'Oldies' - it drives me insane!

LenaLamont · 26/03/2024 23:04

do you think there is a difference between scalloped-potatoes and potato scallops????!!!

@everythingthelighttouches - scalloped potatoes is the dish of thinly sliced potatoes layered in a dish and cooked with stock (or cream, although that’s more likely to be gratin) and my Mum’s “posh” way to serve spuds throughout the 70s and early 80s.

Whereas potato scallops are the deep fried things from the chippy.

(How is it called the Chipper in N. I.? I didn’t think they called it the Chipper in Derry Girls, which is my Bible on all things Norn Irish. Must rewatch…)

RaraRachael · 27/03/2024 00:03

@dementedpixie No potato - or should I say tattie- fritters in any chippers near here at all.

followingthebreath · 27/03/2024 08:12

I think what's going on linguistically here is that it is easier to keep the sound at the front of the mouth rather than moving from front to back to front again.

That's why lots of words with an 'A' as the second letter end up changing the sound of the 'A' to keep it in the front of the mouth. For example think of how you pronounce Water! It's easier to keep the whole word at the front of the mouth than move back for the A sound and then forward again.

I'm guessing Scollop is the same.
Unless it's French, an import that uses a different sound.

Caveat,
I'm an historian not a linguist!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/03/2024 08:15

Scollops.
@DollyPartonsBeard , I’d call that a ‘scolloped’ edge, too.

Zapss · 27/03/2024 08:17

Clams.

Falling out of favour probably now, but sliced potatoes that are battered and deep fried. Usually only available in chippers where I live.

Noo! battered slices of potato deep fried from chippy are just fritters here (west Scotland), scallop potatoes are thin slices layered in a gratin dish baked in oven. For the shellfish, scallops for me.

Spandauer · 27/03/2024 08:28

SofaSpuds · 26/03/2024 12:37

I didn't realise it also came like a gratin!
This is what I was thinking of....

Fish ones - scollops

Potato scallops - I had forgotten all about these! We called them Scallops and got them from the chippy. (North West growing up) Battered slices of potato.

Always had a bag of chips on the way home from swimming and asked for "a six of chips with a bit on top" and the "bit" was a scallop... And yes - I'm so old a small bag of chips was 6 pence 😆

Chemenger · 27/03/2024 09:38

At home (ie my parents’ home where I haven’t lived for 40 years) in the north east of Scotland it’s chipper not chippy.

RaraRachael · 27/03/2024 13:38

NE Scotland here too and it's definitely chipper!
