Just that, really.
Do you say "scallops" or "scollops"?

I know someone who says “dolphin nose” potatoes for dauphinoise 😁

We sometimes say dolphin-wise when we are being daft. Aka clever dolphins.

Scallions are spring onions!

Scalloped for the material, I have a scallop edged swimsuit.

I'm over invested in this now!

Scallops are potato based and scollops are shell fish? I could be wrong though 😂

In the North West in the 50s I recall getting scallops from the chippy, it was a thick slab of battered potato, nothing fishy at all, posher places tended to serve two thinner slices of potato with a sliver of fish between them.
Scallops now tends to refer to the seafood and can be pronounced either, (or 'eether') way All countries have words whose pronunciation varies around the country, I wonder if their populations get as hung up about it as MN seems to??

Scottish, ska-lops for both.

I think I've heard sco-llops on TV to refer to the potato thing, but only by English or American people?

(I don't think I've ever heard Scottish people talk openly about scalloped potatoes. Obviously, I know they're a thing, but perhaps we just don't mention them up here? The Potato Preparation That Dare Not Speak Its Name?)

I love the thought of Scottish people secretively discussing scalloped potatoes behind closed doors!

They are not something I've heard of before and I'm about as far south-east as you can get.

I'm 'scollop' by the way for both the seafood and the edging.

I didn't realise it also came like a gratin!
This is what I was thinking of....

Yeah me too, that’s what I meant by ‘thing a bit like a fish cake’.

40andlovelife · 26/03/2024 13:30

Like this .... Skoll op

dementedpixie · 26/03/2024 13:31

I call this a fritter. Is this a potato scallop/scallop?

It's regional. The bivalves are scallops in Scotland and scollops in England.

Minikievs · 26/03/2024 13:39

@Cheeesus I meant the picture you'd posted wasn't a scallop. Sorry, it didn't pull through on the quote!

Scollops for the fishy stuff, scallops for the potatoey stuff 😋

  • both spelt scallops! Just the pronunciation differs.
Edited

This. Also scallop when referring to a shape such as a scalloped edge on fabric or a rug.

Tarkan · 26/03/2024 13:57

I must be the only Scottish person who says scollop according to this. My family say scollop too though so I'm not alone I suppose. Grin

RedPony1 · 26/03/2024 13:59

Listened to this debate on "help i sexted my boss" podcast not too long ago, and William Hanson says Scollops 😁

kitsuneghost · 26/03/2024 14:01

Scallop for all three
The potato scallop, I think of as layered potato baked in a cream sauce
The battered thing is a potato fritter

Hoplolly · 26/03/2024 14:02

Scollops for both.

Oh a scollop in a bread roll with BBQ from the chippy.

dementedpixie · 26/03/2024 13:31

That is definitely a scallop/scollop. Or a scolly as we called them!

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 26/03/2024 14:03

Scottish - ska- lops

HauntedBungalow · 26/03/2024 14:05

Pronounced to rhyme with bollocks.

MaryFuckingFerguson · 26/03/2024 14:06

Scollop is the correct pronunciation.

Drives me nuts when people say scallop.

scallops for the sea food and potato scallops for the potatoes

No. It’s scalloped potatoes. A potato scallop, round my way, is a circular thing, but like a fish cake.

I feel like I’m repeating myself.
