Is it seen to BU to go to the toilet at work?

Posting here for traffic. In the office this morning, there were 2 members of my team having a moan. Essentially, someone had gone to the toilet and had sprayed some of the provided air freshener. Staff member moans that the staff member in question should have waited until they got home before they "stink out the work toilets".

Staff members in question are mid 20s. It started a stupid debate in the office and basically, the older generation see no issue with going to the toilets at work. Younger generation claim they would be mortified and state they would not poop at work!

Is it a generational thing then? I'm of the mindset, if you have to go, you have to go!

YABU - Get a grip - poop away
YANBU - Gross! Hold it in until you get home!

There was one person where I used to work who "started" around 8.30.

Spent about 30 mins faffing making a cup of tea. Then headed for the toilet. A 30 minute dump was followed by another 30 minutes faffing making tea, which took them nicely up to 10.00 for the cigarette break. Back in at 10.30 to actually start doing some stuff.

GigiAnnna · 25/03/2024 17:21

I try to avoid it but go if I really have to. I don't think anyone really likes having a poo in public so I would think that if they went then they must have needed it.

They clearly have the luxury of not having a bowel disorder

This is what I thought. And the discussion in the office afterwards could be seen as bullying if it turned out that the ‘perpetrator’ has such a disorder qualifying as a disability under the Equality Act. You never know what hidden disabilities people have and this kind of discussion is really unkind.

Pregnancy can also interfere with your regularity too. I'd imagine some types of prolapse may make 'holding on' a really bad idea too?

I always try to find a toilet not near my office preferably on a different floor or building.

This. Every time. I hated when the toilets stank.

I just can’t go at work. It’s unfair to say that other people should ‘hold it in’ but as for myself I can’t do it

I just don't understand how you avoid it. What if, for instance, you've eaten something that gives you the runs?

BreatheAndFocus · 25/03/2024 17:04

You don’t. You poo in the morning before you go to work.

And what if I did go at gone before work, but need to go again while I'm at work? Am I expected to hold that in until I get home?

Perhaps women should all have c-sections when giving birth, because it's rude to show your private parts to strangers 🤔. That's how mad your comment sounds.

I was assuming people were having a poo in the toilet not exposing their bum to the office floor. So no I can't see the correlation.

mumda · 25/03/2024 17:29

It's a normal bodily function. Everyone does it.

Novemberweather99 · 25/03/2024 17:31

It's a bloody toilet for God's sake....that's what it's there for! If you need to go, you need to go! Simple as that. Spray some ViPoo (or whatever it's called) down the loo before you go if you are concerned about the odour, or open a window.
A German friend of mine used to light a match after he'd been to the loo. Apparently it gets rid of the smell but I've never tried it!

You don’t. You poo in the morning before you go to work.

I take full dose, full strength cocodamol daily. If my body allows me to poo I do as I am told. It is very rare I'd ever need to go before work.

You can't do it to order! I start work at 5am. No bloody way am I crapping at 4am. I go when I have the urge to.

Brawcolli · 25/03/2024 17:32

DragonFly98 · 25/03/2024 16:29

Unless you have a bowel condition or are not yet potty trained then yes of course you can choose to wait.

You shouldn’t though, it’s not good for you to hold in a shite!

ErrolTheDragon · 25/03/2024 17:32

Can't believe people admitting to wasting work time going to other parts of the building by more or less circuitous routes to avoid 'embarrassment', or leaving their smells for other teams rather than their own. wtf.

Americano75 · 25/03/2024 17:34

Hey, at least they sprayed some air freshener. I work in a portakabin type building and thought we were having issues with the drains again this morning. Turns out someone had used the singular female loo and ignored the cleaning products provided. Grim.

Brawcolli · 25/03/2024 17:35

BreatheAndFocus · 25/03/2024 16:38

It’s not a generational thing. I’ve never pooed at work and when I worked in an office, anyone having a poo in the Ladies toilets would be unusual and, yes, sometimes commented on.

If you have a medical issue then it’s different and can’t be helped, but surely most adults don’t poo at work! It smacks of laziness to me - couldn’t be arsed to get up a few minutes earlier to go before work. Sometimes people do it to waste time. I worked with a man like this who openly admitted he’d wait till he got to work to poo because he was then being paid to shit 🙄

Neither myself or any of my friends have ‘magic arseholes’. It’s like peeing. You don’t want until you’re absolutely bursting and have to rush to the toilet to pee in the middle of a work presentation. You go before the presentation. Same with pooing. You don’t sit there until you feel your arse is about to explode with crap. You go before or/and after work.

Your logic is so silly 😆 you don’t pee when you don’t have to, you wait until you do. Same with pooing, you can’t just whack one out if you don’t have to go! That doesn’t make you lazy.

DragonGypsyDoris · 25/03/2024 17:36

Being paid to do a poo - what's not to like?

0sm0nthus · 25/03/2024 17:37

Everyone is different, some people are lucky and can be matter of fact about these things, others have issues and can't.

Halloweenrainbow · 25/03/2024 17:40

My bowels are pretty well trained to go at home in the morning after coffee, but if the need arises I'll go at work. It's either a quick poo in the toilet, or spend the day farting all round the office and I know which is more acceptable to most people!

Doingtheboxerbeat · 25/03/2024 17:40

DragonFly98 · 25/03/2024 17:29

I was assuming people were having a poo in the toilet not exposing their bum to the office floor. So no I can't see the correlation.

Because it's a natural thing to do, rather than something we can pick and choose to do. Why are there so many women who have had periods, have routine cervical checks and give birth, being made to feel shame for having a simple bowel movement?
Please make it make sense 🫣.

Berlinlover · 25/03/2024 17:41

How on earth does anyone hold it in? I can’t think of anything more uncomfortable.

AngelQuartz · 25/03/2024 17:41

Nobody should be shamed or feel embarrassed to have a poo.

If someone told me I should “wait til I get home”
Id genuinely tell them to fuck off. I have a close friends who suffers from Chrons and Colitis and I know they would tell an immature poo-phone more than just “fuck off” if they were shamed for going to the toilet at work.

MumblesParty · 25/03/2024 17:42

FrancisSeaton · 25/03/2024 14:16

I'm not sure why toy poo made me chuckle

Me too! I’ve got images of someone with one of those fake plastic dog poos stuffed up her bum, desperately trying to hold it in till home time!

LordPercyPercy · 25/03/2024 17:42

I can't stand prissy types that get all cat-bummed at the thought of someone daring to actually to a shit at work. It's borderline bullying and makes for a literally very uncomfortable workplace.
What if you don't need to get first thing? Do you stay at home slamming espressos hoping things get moving, and make yourself late for work?

Iwasafool · 25/03/2024 17:42

I used to work with someone who said she just couldn't go at work. She lived just down the road so she'd go home if she needed to.
