AIBU?

Is it seen to BU to go to the toilet at work?

Posting here for traffic. In the office this morning, there were 2 members of my team having a moan. Essentially, someone had gone to the toilet and had sprayed some of the provided air freshener. Staff member moans that the staff member in question should have waited until they got home before they "stink out the work toilets".

Staff members in question are mid 20s. It started a stupid debate in the office and basically, the older generation see no issue with going to the toilets at work. Younger generation claim they would be mortified and state they would not poop at work!

Is it a generational thing then? I'm of the mindset, if you have to go, you have to go!

YABU - Get a grip - poop away
YANBU - Gross! Hold it in until you get home!

I’d try to avoid it. But if you really have to go, you really have to go!

I mean I wouldn't go unless I had to but surely that applies to everyone???

If I have to go, I have to go?

I always try to find a toilet not near my office preferably on a different floor or building.

I don’t and can’t.

My children hate the school toilets and literally will not go until they get home which causes carnage as they all dive in and race for the toilet

I just can’t go at work. It’s unfair to say that other people should ‘hold it in’ but as for myself I can’t do it

Do some people have magic arseholes that can hold a shit in all day? Wouldn't that be horribly uncomfortable and bad for you?
If it's frowned upon to use a toilet for its intended purpose is it better to shit your pants?
So many questions...

They clearly have the luxury of not having a bowel disorder

Yeah this has been a thing for as long as I can remember (been working full time in offices for 28 years) really stupid though as everyone poos. I find it really immature and unprofessional when someone comes out of the toilet and goes on about the smell that someone else has left in there etc. I'd try and avoid going to be honest but most days I will probably be in the office 9.5-10 hours so there would be a chance I would need to go and wouldn't want to hold it in all day.

YABU but yes, I have heard it on here before, I remember someone saying that you should be ‘ashamed of yourself’ if you poo at work.
People are weird.

I like go at work because it means I get paid for it but then afterward I give all my colleagues a little goody bag like those terrible ones given out by parents travelling on a plane with a baby.

Inside mine is some lavender oil, a nose plug and a poem that says "Very sorry, thought I'd let you know. To the toilet I had to go. You may want to leave it a little bit, cos I've just done a massive..." I'll let people guess the rest.

Needless to say this hasn't worked and HR have asked me to stop.

With the amount of coffee I drink during a working day, there is absolutely no way I could hold it in! Thankfully I WFH these days.

Employers are legally obliged to provide toilets for employees to use, and that doesn’t mean only for pee! It’s very unhealthy to “hold it in”. You should void both your bladder and bowels when you need to.

Yes it can be a bit embarrassing if you know you’ve made a smell, but we are human beings who have bodily functions, and the “eww what a stink” brigade need to grow up.

I do think spraying air freshener is more antisocial than pooping though, that stuff is awful to breathe in and the air just smells likes poo scented flowers.

Some people are ridiculous about this kind of thing. I used to work with a woman who bitched about people having a poo at work (she was in her late 40s and older than I was at the time, so not a generational thing) and it made other people feel really awful. One of my other colleagues actually confessed that she'd been giving herself really bad stomach pains 'holding it in' because this woman made her paranoid about going to the loo at work!

In reality, it's really bad for you to 'hold it in' for hours if you need to go, and it's perfectly normal to use the loo if you need to. Let's face it, sometimes it's going to smell. Everyone's shit smells sometimes, ffs! Yeah, it's not pleasant but nobody can help it and it's what a toilet is there for.

I don't actually LIKE going for a poo at work, but needs must. Apart from anything else, it's impossible to concentrate on work when you're sitting there desperate to go, with a stomach-ache, worried about the possibility of farting.

I'd be really bloody worried if a member of my team felt like they couldn't use the loo for a number two if they needed one!

If you have to go, you have to go. However I know some people who don’t like poo’ing at home if their partner is there so they hold it in and “stink the toilet out” at work instead. I think that’s abit U.

Well just go then. 🙄 Its extremely unhealthy to hold it all in. I frequently go at work and I can assure you, the world doesn't end.

Don’t see an issue. That’s what toilets are for? I just open the window and let it air. Sometimes you got to go!

i think it’s just a being young / self-conscious thing?
Nothing to do with generation. I would have been the same.
Now, I don’t care about smells / farts / etc…

However, I hate when women hover / men don’t hit target.
And anyone who leaves the toilet not as they found it…
Excluding smells of course, at least they sprayed after!

How ridiculous and immature are some people? If you need a shit just go and have one, it's fuck all to do with anyone else as long as you don't leave a mess
