To think this is at best bizarre, at worst concerning?

A woman has posted the following question on a public Facebook page of holiday area I visit, so Im a member of the group. Lots of people ask for advice on restaurants etc on there.

'We’re coming down next week and would like to take our daughter shopping for some new lingerie/underwear - is there anywhere within say 30-45 mins we could take her?
Thanks'

Am I wrong to actually find this rather disturbing and strange? It's the use of the word lingerie in relation to the daughter that I find odd. Or maybe I'm wrong and it's quite a normal thing to do. But why post on a public forum?. As lots of people pointed out on her post she could just google!

Bizarre in so many ways.

pastypirate · 25/03/2024 12:44

Such a weird post and unnecessary detail. Why wouldn't they just post asking about where the clothes shops are. Who needs to know what its for fgs

Skiphopbump · 25/03/2024 12:48

Are there any independent shops that sell underwear? It could be a clumsy way of someone trying to promote a shop.

Movinghouseatlast · 25/03/2024 11:55

I'm so glad you said that! That's why I posted really, I keep thinking about it. I didn't put that as I knew I'd get people accusing me of being weird- already had one person accusing me of that!

She is definitely not a man, so I just keep thinking is there some quite bizarre thing with the daughter

She could be in her 50s/60s, the daughter could be in her 30s, maybe her daughter lives no where near her and this is where they are meeting up? Could be a meet up before her wedding for example so this is the only time they could go shopping together? Yes she could Google, but lots of people don’t.

Polominty · 25/03/2024 11:57

Probably a 6 ft tall “woman” with a beard looking for somewhere discreet ( not used to this kind of client) to prance around trying on all the underwear.

What kind of transphobic crap is this?

There is nothing suggesting this woman is trans.

Movinghouseatlast · 25/03/2024 13:02

On Facebook there are photos of people! She isn't that age. Looks about 40ish I'd say.

No independent underwear shops in the village. It's the back of beyond really!

LakeTiticaca · 25/03/2024 13:04

How old is the daughter? I would be horrified if my mother posted on a public group that she was buying me lingerie!!
I can buy my own thanks very much!!

Hillrunning · 25/03/2024 13:29

If I read that comment I would assume she meant independent shops locally and therefore easier to ask than Google.

iLovee · 25/03/2024 13:32

Ooh yuck! I would find that really unsettling too what an odd thing to post about.

I would think they are either ridiculously nieve or a perv looking to get off. Either way, I'm sorry you saw that.

Do you know she definitely has a daughter? And I guess what age?

It does seem weird to know you need undies/'lingerie' but rather than just getting them at home you would wait till you're in some obscure village on holiday?

The word 'lingerie' though technically correct, indicates it should be someone at least the age of consent. It implies sexy rather than functional. I can't imagine my mum or other women ever referring to it as anything other than bra and knickers/pants/underwear, even as an adult, in the context of purchase.

Do you think they're trying to start a convo about teen 'lingerie' then switch to another chat privately and things go downhill from there? I guess that could be the case.
Or they wanted to go there to perv on girl buying undies?

Did people not just reply with try Primark. Try marks etc.?

Yeah, it does seem really off.

Not transphobic, fetishphobic if you're really looking for an excuse to get your knickers in a twist because posters aren't mindlessly supporting pervy men as much as you'd like.

OooScotland · 25/03/2024 14:07

Fetish, getting off on the replies, and imagining people thinking of the described parental shopping trip.

Maybe her first language isn't English and the use of the word lingerie is simply how she was taught, or maybe considered more polite than underoos/keks/thong?

It's bad enough when holiday makers use local fb groups as their personal holiday planners, like the residents are all just staff but THIS is just bizarre!

Movinghouseatlast · 25/03/2024 14:27

She says underwear/lingerie. Again you can tell on facebook, there is a photo and profile of the person. She's in her 40,s, from the UK.

She talks of 'we're ' taking the daughter. That means mum and dad taking a daughter of whatever age she into an underwear shop and all choosing together That is odd. And yes, there is a dad, he's there in her profile.

It’s a weird question but I wouldn’t have instantly assumed a man with a fetish. I went with my mum to buy my “lingerie” (underwear) until I was about 14 and sometimes got pants or whatever as a birthday present. She wasn’t very technological so would have found it easier to ask things than Google them. But perhaps I take things at face value too much

GingerKombucha · 25/03/2024 14:53

I ran out of time to buy wedding lingerie before I left home (London) and had to find some on a Greek island so it can happen...

Just ref your nearest M&S, good luck to anyone getting off on that.

😂😂

Very strange. Just buy your new keks before you go!!

Haven’t heard them called that for fifty years when I work in a engineering factory.

Yes I wondered this actually.

People's for whom English is their first language know that lingerie generally refers to underwear for adult women and usually has more sexual connotations than just saying underwear.

SpringSprungALeak · 25/03/2024 15:35

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 25/03/2024 10:43

Lingerie is the correct term for underwear and some people may prefer it to underwear/bras/knickers. It's just the fact that it now has connotations of "sexy lingerie". Lots of sites called it Lingerie

It's a little weird to go on holiday and then go underwear shopping but maybe it's just weirdly worded?

I don't think child & lingerie belong in the same sentence. If the 'child' is an adult they don't need to use the word 'child'

@Movinghouseatlast presume it's some hairy handed bell end.
