Is this grim or am I being pathetic?

As the title says. Name changed as I really don’t know if it’s just me.

Went to a local garden centre for coffee with my mum today. While we were there we purchased two jacket potatoes.

I ordered bacon with cheese for my potato. I have a suspected allergy and am following a diet that removes foods. At this moment I cannot have legumes in any form among other things.

When my food came they brought beans and cheese. I cannot have this. The girl that came out asked to look at the receipt and I pointed out what I’d ordered. She seemed to have a huge issue with taking it away and giving me what I’d paid for.

5 minutes later my food returned. I could see straight away that she had scraped the beans off and replaced it with cheese and bacon.

It’s a Sunday and I wasn’t going to cause a fuss so just took it. The cafe was full by this point.

On eating the food was cold apart from the bacon that they’d just cooked. I also had to pick beans out that she’d missed.

Am I being precious or is this as disgusting as I think. If you work in food standards what would be your opinion. What if id been highly allergic to the beans or the sauce that was stuck all over the potato?

First world problem for me I know but could have been a serious issue for someone else.

No this is awful. Even without the allergy issue (which is pretty serious!) this is disgraceful service.

Tryingtojointhemumclub · 28/03/2024 17:23

That’s appalling! I would email a complaint over and report them to the local council/ food safety agency. My son has a severe egg allergy and something similar (scraping allergen off instead of replacing) would make him severely ill. I know it’s sometimes difficult and we don’t want to ‘cause a scene’ but allergy’s are serious and should be treated as such!

PopandFizz · 28/03/2024 18:16

If you informed them you had an allergy when they came with the wrong order you should definitely have made them make you a fresh potato. It's possible the girl doesn't even know what a legume is.
But by not complaining you've created a situation whereby she might think this is okay for future allergies!

It's not on at all but not sure what you can do now since you for some unknown reason you sat and ate an allergen.
I bet they saw you picking off the beans and decided you'd lied about your allergy.

PopandFizz · 28/03/2024 18:17

I've asked for whole new plates of food because they've given us beans on the plate touching other foods instead of in a pot as requested before. My daughter won't eat it touching as she's SEN

Viviennemary · 28/03/2024 18:23

They shouldn't have added the beans when they weren't on the description of the dish. I suppose profit margins don't allow for food wastage. I wouldnt like to run a cafe these days catering for all these special diets. But it was gross the way they served it.

I think it was actually the wrong dish, i.e. potato with beans was one menu item, potato with cheese and bacon was another.

willWillSmithsmith · 28/03/2024 18:48

YNBU. I had to tell staff at Wagamama recently that they gave the wrong dish to my son (who had starting eating it). They were extremely apologetic and offered to replace with original order. My son said don’t worry as he’d started eating the wrong order so they removed the entire cost of his dish from the bill. They couldn’t have been better, first class customer service.

TeabySea · 28/03/2024 18:52

I'd have sent it back again, busy or not. If they're serving food they need to be aware of potential allergies and cross-contamination.
They should have remade it for you.

I think you should contact them to advise what happened and let them know the potential implications of not being suitably aware of allergens. You don't have to ask for any compensation, but just take the 'raising awareness' angle.

Helengreggregson · 28/03/2024 18:55

No you are not being precious at all. Even if you didn’t have an allergy this is sloppy and not acceptable.

Kindofcrunchy · 24/03/2024 16:34

Would've thought it would be much more likely that the allergy would be dairy related? Never heard of having an allergy to beans. Isn't it more that your body isn't used to the fibre?

I'd be annoyed about being given the wrong food though.

legunes is a common and legitimate allergy

ilovesushi · 28/03/2024 19:21

Grim. I couldn't have eaten it.

OMG…Natalie’s law applies to EVERY venue selling food to the public. The menu sheet should notify you to declare allergens when ordering. This is so the kitchen staff can minimise the risks of cross contaminating your food with a known allergen. Yes that takes time, yes a chef may cry if it’s during a busy shift BUT they will clean down and prep your meal as safely as is possible and let you know if they cannot do so.

You were failed by not being asked if you had any allergens, being given the wrong meal. If you then told them you could not eat said food due to an allergy to beans than they should NOT have scraped said food and reserved it to you.
Hot hold food should also be served hot and kept well above 63c even if it’s just a potato.
Complain like crazy. Complain in the first instance to the head of catering, if that does not work take it to the company who own said garden centre and offer to contact the local council and even the food standards agency if they do not look into this and take measures to ensure it does not happen again.

Someone else with a severe allergy could die if thats their idea of food hygiene and allergen awareness. (Worked in hospitality till recently, still keep up with training though)

Yes, all of this.

You need to complain as this type of ILLEGAL and shoddy practice could kill someone!!

Dogstar78 · 28/03/2024 19:30

Nope, you are so right. The fact she checked your receipt! Why would you order something you can't eat.

I nearly lost my partner last month to anaphylaxis. It can be fatal and I would definitely report it.

Baked beans could kill me, im allergic to tomatoes. Its not acceptable.

Notsureaboutusername · 28/03/2024 20:37

Baked beans are not an allergen. An ingredient in the baked beans is more likely to be the allergen. An allergen could be fatal. An intolerance not so.

Youre referring to haricot beans. Baked beans are haricot beans and a tomato sauce recipe.

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 28/03/2024 20:50

It sounds like an employee issue. Having an expensively grim time at the hands of inexperienced, uninterested, untrained, unsupervised staff is increasingly the norm for a Sunday.

I'd gently ask if you could speak to their manager, and if there isn't one present, email them later. You get nowhere talking to staff who think the problem is with you, not them.

PuggyPuggyPuggy · 28/03/2024 21:16

Christ, some people have low standards. Allergy or no allergy, you don't take someone's money for a meal, present them them with something partially wrong, and then scrape the wrong component of the meal off, leaving some bits and congealing sauce all over the main food item. That's revolting.

katepilar · 28/03/2024 21:17

I am trying to think why you are so unsure whether its grim or not. Yes, it is disgusting and extremely poor custumer service.

Fromthebirdsnest · 29/03/2024 01:09

I'm a ceoliac my son has a severe milk allergy you wouldn't believe the amount of simular incidents we have had , I'd have sent it back and complained and emailed head office , I had to do this as even after repeating myself 5 times that my son has a severe milk allergy they put cows milk in his drink and I had to use his epi pen and call an ambulance he was 4 at the time, I'm a very mild mannered woman but I could have honestly punched the barista. Always send things back and make a fuss because it helps prevent incidents happening to people with severe allergys if they are forced to recognise allergy safety .. sorry this happened your right absolutely disgusting

Can you have cooked tomato? If so, what's the difference?

Cooked is fine. I love tomato based pasta sauces, eyc.

It's something about the acid in the raw tomato. Even the smell makes me nauseous. I can smell even a small amount.

We have been really impressed with Wagamama every time we go (which is a few times a year). They ask straight away about allergies, then a manager has to come and take and sign off on the order and they ask if people in the same party plan to share dishes because they make all the dishes in a separate area in that case. And it is all done (IME) with great charm and ease. I was told they have a special area for allergies which they clean in a certain way.

AffIt · 29/03/2024 11:26

Agreed, @BuildingAShepherdsHut - I was there recently with a friend who has an egg allergy and I was really impressed by how it was handled.

FasterthanaButteredOtter · 29/03/2024 14:10

@Kindofcrunchy please do some basic reading to educate yourself! Honestly!! The "I've not heard of it so it can't exist" attitude is ridiculous.

Several posters have already pointed out to you that peanuts come under the legumes category for allergies.
