Is this grim or am I being pathetic?

As the title says. Name changed as I really don’t know if it’s just me.

Went to a local garden centre for coffee with my mum today. While we were there we purchased two jacket potatoes.

I ordered bacon with cheese for my potato. I have a suspected allergy and am following a diet that removes foods. At this moment I cannot have legumes in any form among other things.

When my food came they brought beans and cheese. I cannot have this. The girl that came out asked to look at the receipt and I pointed out what I’d ordered. She seemed to have a huge issue with taking it away and giving me what I’d paid for.

5 minutes later my food returned. I could see straight away that she had scraped the beans off and replaced it with cheese and bacon.

It’s a Sunday and I wasn’t going to cause a fuss so just took it. The cafe was full by this point.

On eating the food was cold apart from the bacon that they’d just cooked. I also had to pick beans out that she’d missed.

Am I being precious or is this as disgusting as I think. If you work in food standards what would be your opinion. What if id been highly allergic to the beans or the sauce that was stuck all over the potato?

First world problem for me I know but could have been a serious issue for someone else.

happens a lot, I work in kitchens and that’s basically what they do, unless it’s a real allergy then it would be made again. It would be Grimm if it was someone else’s food but it’s not food that’s been touched by anyone but the her s it’s pretty normal

GreatGardenstuff · 28/03/2024 11:42

I absolutely would have sent it back, and made a complaint. That’s not ok.

Badburyrings · 28/03/2024 11:47

Personally I think that is totally and utterly gross. I absolutely hate baked beans, could not eat anything that had beans on it and scraped off.. even the thought of it makes me heave. I would have made an unholy fuss if I were you.

Bonbon249 · 28/03/2024 11:56

Ick! Being busy no excuse for poor service! At the risk of sounding like a 'Karen', I would have asked to speak to a manager.

MermaidMummy06 · 28/03/2024 12:43

I'm allergic to raw tomato. The number of times the food comes out with tomato on it anyway is about 80%. I send it back. It's obvious when they've brought it back they've just scraped the tomato off. I can smell it & see the acid & seeds. Happens 90% of the time.

My polite response: 'Oh, excuse me, are you sure you remade it, as I can still see the tomato. Look, I can eat it, but you'll be cleaning my vomit off the floor in about two minutes.'

You'd be surprised how quickly it is taken away & remade.

Ginnnny · 28/03/2024 12:52

This seems to be a huge issue in places; they make a mistake then act like you've shit in their cornflakes when you ask for what you ordered.

nopuppiesallowed · 28/03/2024 12:53

I'm coeliac and whilst on holiday in Stockholm, we ate breakfast in a restaurant and explained about needing a strict gluten free diet. When it came, the bread roll looked suspiciously like a normal bread roll, so I queried it. I was assured it was gf. I split it open. It looked like a full of gluten roll so I queried it again. Again I was told it was gf. I ate a small amount and it tasted heavenly, but thought perhaps Swedish gf bread is better than English gf bread. Then I pushed it to one side as I was uncertain. Checked again and the waitress was really sniffy with me. After breakfast we went back to our hotel and the reaction kicked in. I was in bed (when not on the loo) for the rest of our city break and severely dehydrated. Anyone in the catering industry needs to be fully aware of how serious food allergies and intolerance can be. And coeliac disease is an autoimmune condition so rather nasty if you eat even small amounts of gluten.

Fraaahnces · 28/03/2024 13:04

I have coeliac disease. I’m not going to kick the bucket if I’m accidentally fed a bit of gluten in a sauce or something, because it’s not an allergy. It’s an autoimmune disease. (Guaranteed I will be on the loo with diarrhea cursing the universe later, though!) Meanwhile, if anyone were to touch a kiwi fruit or banana, passionfruit, plums, strawberry or tomato - or use latex gloves (thank goodness those days are over), I would be stabbing myself in the leg with an epipen! My son’s list of food allergens is even more dramatic. (Nightmare to invite over…) That waitress’s attitude is cruising for negligent homicide case.

RedDuffle · 28/03/2024 13:04

I wouldn't necessarily say disgusting but it's definitely not acceptable, they needed to make you a fresh potato and filling for sure.

Raccaccoonie · 28/03/2024 14:26

I thought "peanuts aren't nuts but actually a legume" was one of those factoids everyone knew! Clearly not.
Legume allergies can be terrible.

Kindofcrunchy · 24/03/2024 16:34

Would've thought it would be much more likely that the allergy would be dairy related? Never heard of having an allergy to beans. Isn't it more that your body isn't used to the fibre?

I'd be annoyed about being given the wrong food though.

What an utterly pointless thing to post. "I haven't heard of that allergy, are you sure you have it?"!!!

OP, I work in hospitality and as other PPs have said, that would be totally unacceptable in our venue. Especially after you declared your allergy.

I would definitely contact the cafe, in a "Just so you know" type of way.

For some that would have been an ambulance job you should have complained to management and photographed food for health inspectors

Can you have cooked tomato? If so, what's the difference?

DaftFlerken · 28/03/2024 14:44

I would have returned it again - it is not what you ordered & paid for, they did not know it wasn't due to an allergy so it's pretty disgusting on their part

CactusMactus · 28/03/2024 14:45

That makes me feel sick.... baked beans are rank! I would not have eaten that.

You should email the manager and complain.

Mumofoneandone · 28/03/2024 14:50

Cafe totally out of order - should have done a full replacement or refund. However as I have a shellfish intolerance I declare whenever I eat out - usually asked anyway.

2024istheyearforme · 28/03/2024 14:51

So this happened to a friend of mine and she nearly died so yanbu. She can't have nuts or dairy and there was a meal that came with a side that had nuts and dairy in, she mentioned she can't have that plate now as it's touched nuts & dairy ... They scraped it off and gave it back to her without her knowing, the food has still touched it and she was really violently sick in the cafe. It's not funny to mess with people's food

Appleandoranges · 28/03/2024 15:00

Someone in my family has an allergy to beans. Tested and diagnosed at a hospital. It's not as commons as nuts but perfectly possible.

Appleandoranges · 28/03/2024 15:00

Sorry directed at posters who appeared sceptical on allergy to beans

muffledvoicesinyourhead · 28/03/2024 15:04

Imo, it doesn't even need to be to the level of allergies or mere intolerances. If you order your food one way (minus certain ingredients) and the kitchen gets it wrong, they should apologise and remedy the situation, not by half-heartedly scraping off the offending element. I'd be gracious in pointing out the problem, but it's not your fault they made a mistake. If I'm paying good money, I expect the food to be as ordered. (The number of times I've had to remove mayo after specifically requesting it be left off things...)

I think that’s one poster who apparently thinks she knows people’s allergies better than they do.

At least I hope there aren’t multiple people like that.

Whyarepeoplesoweird · 28/03/2024 16:25

Well no....I'd make a complaint. You're possibly allergic to something. A trace of seaseme seed or nut would be enough to kill some people, she doesn't know if your allergic and that's besides the point. I'd make make complaint to management and point that out.

LetsRockOnTheMoon · 28/03/2024 16:35

I had a very similar incident and it nearly killed me. I have anaphylaxis to wheat, I ordered a burger meal without the bun, everything else was wheat free. My burger arrived with the bun, I sent it back. The same burger came out again, but now cold. I sent it back again because it would have wheat on it.

A new, or so I thought, burger arrived with no bun, and hot. It took about thirty seconds after my first mouthful to realise it was the same burger but they had reheated it.

Thankfully there was an off duty ITU consultant in the restaurant, but I spent two weeks in ITU.

HSE were involved.

trippily · 28/03/2024 16:39

IF YOU HAVE AN ALLERGY YOU NEED TO SAY WHEN YOU ORDER OR WE CANT HELO YOU

Zimunya · 28/03/2024 16:43

It is grim, OP, and dangerous. Regardless of whether you stated an allergy or not, they are not following food standard processes. Please report them:
