Relative has booked tickets for the cinema. She's over 60 and has membership for the cinema (so additional discount). It therefore made sense for her to book and me to reimburse her.

She has booked me as a student, telling me that I can tell them I am in the last year of my PhD.
I don't want to do this.

She is a complicated woman - very low self esteem and I know her response will be something like "oh stupid me, fucked up again, I can't get anything right". For this reason, I often drop issues that I might want to talk about, or hold back in giving my POV. I can't drop this one though; I mean it's me that's going to get chucked out or humiliated - and quite rightly too.

Why is it understandable that she thinks of OP as a student?

Because she is doing a PhD.

53 year olds can be students!

colouredball · 24/03/2024 20:35

Neither of these things are going to happen but if you are so bothered just buy another ticket?

toomanyy · 24/03/2024 20:46

Some cinemas will absolutely call you out / humiliate you for this behaviour so you’re absolutely right to be wary.

Has the relative sent you the booking? I think you should definitely offer to pay the difference.

And tell relative that if she ever books you as a student again you won’t even attempt to go with her again.

It does happen.

I'm confused.

Are you actually doing a PhD, but don't have a student card?

Or is she just suggesting that you outright lie?

burnoutbabe · 24/03/2024 20:52

Yeah if you are doubga phd I'd assume you cab get the student discount.

I finished my masters 18 months ago and still have my cafe Nero 25% off discount applied. I'm 51.

No I'm not doing a PhD.
I am not a student.

No I'm not doing a PhD.
I am not a student.

In which case, I am with you! I wouldn't be comfortable with this either.

EmilyTjP · 24/03/2024 21:09

A member of our group was asked for Student ID on Friday. So they do check. (Showcase)

No I'm not doing a PhD.
I am not a student.

Why on earth did she do that then! How strange.

byteme1011 · 24/03/2024 21:21

To be honest when I've bought tickets to the cinema/theatre I've been asked before if I'm a student and said no (got a baby face) and they've put it through as one anyway - makes no difference to the staff working there

colouredball · 24/03/2024 21:29

No I'm not doing a PhD.
I am not a student.

You really needed to put this in the OP.

Panpastels · 24/03/2024 21:34

You made it sound in the OP like you were a phd student but didn't want the faff of proving a discount was applicable. That she lied outright is just odd and I would have told her so.

MyGooseisTotallyLoose · 24/03/2024 21:35

Is she someone who 'accidentally' likes to create drama and issues, that centres herself but gets to play a victim?

Legoninjago1 · 24/03/2024 21:45

Yanbu OP. I completely get what your problem is with this. What a pointless potentially awkward situation she's created.

Oh sorry, I thought it was obvious that she had bought me a ticket not appropriate for my status.

No, it really wasn't obvious at all.

EmilyTjP · 24/03/2024 21:10

She said it was to save money so we could buy coffee and/or ice cream. Neither of us are in a situation where going to the cinema and buying a coffee stretches us financially.

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts. There's no more to say really.

Who is going to chuck you out and humiliate you - the cinema police?
Do you really think anyone is bothered about how much was paid for your ticket?
You really do need a reality check

ZiriForGood · 24/03/2024 22:31

I just wanted to say it was pretty clear from the first post that you aren't a student, and that the Phd was your relative's suggestion to lie.

The same way, it was clear you are paying for your ticket, so advice like "buy your own" was a bit off.

However, no matter how clearly you write things, someone will always misunderstand or project their own situation.

Yes, in some areas student IDs are checked at the entrance.

In my nearest cinema failing to present your student ID would mean being sent back to the ticket counter to pay the difference.

To me and everyone who actually read the post :)

Yes, some posters skimmed through the keywords and started telling the OP she is difficult, but, as I pointed out, there is always someone like that, no matter how spelled out the facts are.

I actually read the post.

What's your issue? You understood it, I didn't, so what? Is it that hard to believe that some people don't pick up detail in the same way as you?
