Should we stay on GMT?

Ifailed · 24/03/2024 12:41

Now that we are free from the whip and yoke of our previous European Overlords, should we stay on the 'natural' GMT we are on at the moment when the sun is at it's highest at noon, or continue to fuck about with the clocks twice a year, next time being next Sunday?
Am I being unreasonable to stay on GMT?

GMT has nothing to do with the EU. It started in 1916, to make use of natural daylight. Although Germany did it first. Our school holidays etc was to do with farming. The EU voted to scrap it in 2019. The decisions that you don't like were taken by our government, not the EU.

LegoDeathTrap · 24/03/2024 12:45

Is this why you voted for Brexit?

VickyEadieofThigh · 24/03/2024 12:45

NOTHING to do with the EU.

BrownSauceOnBeans · 24/03/2024 12:46

Yes, fuck that!

BST or BST+1 all year round please.

LiterallyOnFire · 24/03/2024 12:47

Yoke and the whip? Dramatic.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 24/03/2024 12:47

I assume you live in the south east, and therefore think this is a great idea, rather than the north of Scotland when you would know it’s not a great idea…

Ifailed · 24/03/2024 12:56

I was being sarcastic.

Will night vision goggles be provided to those of us who would spend most of our time in darkness? Or at least some free torches?

If you spend most of your time in darkness, what difference does an hour make?

What difference does an hour make? Well, you started it OP. Grin

Us in Yorkshire are affected too!

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 24/03/2024 13:10

@Ifailed It's not really just an extra hour of darkness though is it. Perhaps you'd like to change the seasons to suit you too? You could just get rid of winter

CremeEggThief · 24/03/2024 13:14

YABU. We should be on BST all year around to get an extra hour of light in the evenings, but as usual, everything is set up to favour the lark in this country!😡

The lark, or school children in the north of the UK getting to school safely?

wombat1a · 24/03/2024 13:26

Much rather keep what we have now, BST all year round will be miserable in the winter, GMT in the summer means 03-21 instead of 04-22, BST in the winter means 09-18 instead of 08-17.

CremeEggThief · 24/03/2024 13:30

Well study after study shows school starts too early for teenagers anyway and what do schools do? Try to start the day even earlier in a lot of cases, instead of meeting the needs of most pupils. 😡

As a former teacher and a night owl, the secondary school day should not start until 11 am in my opinion.

The problem with Britain is too many go to bed way too early in the first place. 11 pm- 1 am should be seen as the normal time for most people to go to bed, instead of late!

Bbq1 · 24/03/2024 13:48

I like the clocks changing. Signals Spring and Autumm arriving.

MamaAndTheSofa · 24/03/2024 14:42

I've always wondered why we have to change the clocks at all... why not just change the start/end time of everything by an hour each time?

OhmygodDont · 24/03/2024 14:49

I wish we would just stick with one time. Even if we have to divide into a nation of different time zones. America manage it 😂

Kalevala · 24/03/2024 14:52

Hell, no. I like the extra hour of daylight after work. I'd say most people are more likely to use it in the evening rather than in the early morning.

I'd say the hours when it's darkest are the normal time to sleep.

We tried that one year when I was a child. It was very dark in the mornings going to school and the accident rate went up substantially. It was scrapped as it was decided that it was too dangerous.

You’re talking about BST, aren’t you? GMT dates from 1884

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 24/03/2024 15:18

Just going remind people that the North of Scotland does exist, and we quite like daylight too.....
