Should we stay on GMT?

Now that we are free from the whip and yoke of our previous European Overlords, should we stay on the 'natural' GMT we are on at the moment when the sun is at it's highest at noon, or continue to fuck about with the clocks twice a year, next time being next Sunday?
Am I being unreasonable to stay on GMT?

The lark, or school children in the north of the UK getting to school safely?

The UK doesn't have a North. Anything outside of the SE is a barren no-mans land.

I was pleasantly surprised when I saw an OP advocating GMT all year round (which is what I would rather we had, and very few others seem to want), and was a bit disappointed to realise OP actually meant BST all year round! Never mind :) I really would like to stick with our natural hours, and if it means changing the times some things start/end, so be it.

Just going remind people that the North of Scotland does exist, and we quite like daylight too.....

we’re forgotten and should just exist in darkness apparently!

bellamountain · 24/03/2024 15:27

How do children in France cope with getting to school in the dark? Why is it such a problem here but nowhere else? Surely an extra hours of daylight in the evening would do so much to give this country a much needed boost. Sports, leisure, kids clubs, the list goes on. SAD is a very real thing.

We are far to stupid here you see 😂

I’m sure there are countries where it’s near continued darkness for much of winter if not all but we silly billies too dark in morning we die 🤪

Desecratedcoconut · 24/03/2024 15:37

I went to lapland in December. Very strange to be wondering around in the dark at 10am

Onesailwait · 24/03/2024 17:29

Our clocks went forward 2 weeks ago. It's already made a difference. I love the extra light time in the evening. Feels like spring

It is not about people being “silly billies” - it is about the fact that it is statistically safer for children to travel to and from school in the light rather than the dark.

The school day is generally balanced around midday so GMT makes sense in winter. Where I live (North of England) we need bike lights to get both to and from school for safety but it is “dull not dark”.

If you go much further north than Scotland then there is no choice - you have to deal with darkness for both trips. However, most of these countries are far more sparsely populated so there are a lot less cars on the road. It is darkness and lots of cars that cause the danger.

For the summer then there is a choice - with GMT you get light between 3am and 4am. With BST you get light from 9pm - 10pm. Personally I would always choose the evening light. I like to sleep in the 3am - 4am hours. I think most people do!

MuggedByReality · 24/03/2024 17:42

No. We should stay on BST.

KnickerlessParsons · 24/03/2024 17:44

I think we should stay on BST all year round, but I don't think the Scots like that idea.

Traumdeuter · 24/03/2024 17:47

This time of year is perfect - light at 6am and dark by 7pm. I think I need to move somewhere nearer the equator.

Rosestulips · 24/03/2024 17:51

I’d prefer keeping it as it is now, in mid summer when it’s still light at 11pm it makes it difficult to get to sleep earlier, especially for children.

They would be my ideal hours of daylight

Droolylabradors · 24/03/2024 17:57

Yes. I'm an early bird. I'd much rather have the extra light at 4am than at 10pm midsummer.

Hate it that next week my pre work walks will go back to being dark for a few weeks.

I'm in bed for 8.30 in the week and 9ish at the weekends and so I say leave the clocks as they are!!!

(obvs lighthearted and I feel sorry for those in the far north).

Ineffable23 · 24/03/2024 18:05

I'd go with BST all year round or BST and BST + 1.

I'm a lark but I'm a lark BECAUSE it gets light so early and dark so early.

Same. I wake earlier in summer because it is light. I tend to follow the sun and sleep longer in winter than summer.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 24/03/2024 18:51

Hahaha NOOOO!!!! You obviously have never lived in the north of Scotland or the Islands. JFC it's getting dark at 3pm in Glasgow..... And that's in the centre.

amylou8 · 24/03/2024 18:56

I'd rather stay on BST, but changing it twice a year is a PITA so either will do.
