Lamp post right outside my bedroom window

We've just moved to a new build and the lamp post that is directly outside my bedroom window is on all night, my room is so light and I'm having trouble sleeping, I am short of money after moving and having to buy new white goods as both our washing machine and fridge freezer broke within 3 weeks of each other so I can't get a black out blind until next month.

Does anyone know who I would contact about this? Or any cheap temporary solution?

Eye mask, £8 from Amazon

coffeenomore · 23/03/2024 19:54

What do you mean who would you contact? The lamppost was there when you bought the house

CheeseElectric · 23/03/2024 19:54

As a temporary solution, dampen the window and apply sheets of tin foil, which will stick to the glass. It's not pretty but it will block out all the light and it's a cheap quick fix.

elm26 · 23/03/2024 19:54

Sounds silly but I can't wear them, I feel so claustrophobic when I have one on. I know I'm strange 🫣

This or sleep in a different room

Black bin liners taped to the window?

PotatoPudding · 23/03/2024 19:55

Get yourself an eye mask or see if you can pick up a cheap Groblind on Marketplace.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/03/2024 19:55

You should contact the council street lighting team. We had this issue and they ended up switching off the light fully. But once on the other side they put black tape over the top bit so it glared downwards only.
You can say it's disturbing your sleep. I found it was dealt with swiftly. If you get nowhere then contact local counsellor. It shouldn't come to that though.
Unless the lamp and road is owned by the developer? In that case I guess contact them.

Awrite · 23/03/2024 19:55

Cheap temporary solution is black bins bags taped to the window. We did this when we lived in a rented house between houses once.

The blackout blind guy told us it's more effective because you can prevent any gaps.

I mean who would I contact to ask if it's meant to be on ALL day and night. It's so bright, LED. Surely it should be off between certain times and not on in the day?

Then that's your problem?

You can get travel black out blinds for kids rooms on Amazon. Surely you viewed the house before you moved in?

Thank you! Will try this

This - works pretty well and is cheap.

Justbefair · 23/03/2024 19:55

You know you will be getting the blackout curtains soon, meanwhile eyemask, can pick up from poundworld etc. Can you hang anything like a blanket over the rail to make it darker?

boatgirl81 · 23/03/2024 19:56

Do you know who is responsible for the lamp? They can fit cowls that direct the light away from a bedroom window

elm26 · 23/03/2024 19:57

@coffeenomore can't sleep in another room as my DD is in there and my king size bed wouldn't fit.

Ah right. Fair enough. Contact the council then. There will be a wait probably. I've been reporting a broken one in a dark alleyway and the council still haven't fixed it 6 months later

Sleep on the floor on your sofa cushions? Buy a blow up mattress?

elm26 · 23/03/2024 19:57

Of course I viewed before I moved in, I didn't expect a street lamp to be on 24 hours a day.

Smittenkitchen · 23/03/2024 19:58

LEDs are often just on all the time including during the day because they use such little energy.

theduchessofspork · 23/03/2024 19:58

I don’t think the council will do anything cos you knew it was there.

Google temporary black out blinds - they are cardboard concertina things - about a tenner a window and work well if the right size, they’ll last you for a while. - eye masks fall off IME

When you put in proper blackouts get them properly fitted snug to your window or they will let in light. You might need a box thing like hotels have to stop that happening at the top

What's the problem with it being on in the day in terms of your sleep? Are you a shift worker?

Vistada · 23/03/2024 19:59

Good god you lot are on one tonight

An led street lamp should not be shining directly into a bedroom, it is poor planning on the behalf of either the council or the developers

OP- as above, get onto the council and see if they can fit cowels

LED usage should be banned imo in street lights and headlights

Completely unnecessary

elm26 · 23/03/2024 19:59

Thanks to everyone for your helpful suggestions, will try tin foil or bin bags and try and find a contact for the developer or the council and find out who deals with them.

You can buy blackout fabric on amazon for a couple pounds per meter, and duct tape it to window frame or close it in the windows. I have this in my kids room!
