Lamp post right outside my bedroom window

elm26 · 23/03/2024 19:52

We've just moved to a new build and the lamp post that is directly outside my bedroom window is on all night, my room is so light and I'm having trouble sleeping, I am short of money after moving and having to buy new white goods as both our washing machine and fridge freezer broke within 3 weeks of each other so I can't get a black out blind until next month.

Does anyone know who I would contact about this? Or any cheap temporary solution?

Sounds silly but I can't wear them, I feel so claustrophobic when I have one on. I know I'm strange 🫣

Black out curtains or a roller blind behind the curtain. You won't get the light moved.

toomanyy · 23/03/2024 21:41

YANBU OP. I once saw a report on TV years ago that constant artificial light can lead to breast cancer. I don’t know if that was later proved but it made me hate the lamp post outside my bedroom too.

Twinkletwinklelil · 23/03/2024 21:41

Sorry that people are being so rude to you!
uncalled for.

you can get some cheap Velcro/stick on black out blinds from Amazon I use them for my baby’s rooom. Absolute god send.

OP clearly says in the OP I can't get a black out blind until next month.

@concernedchild

"Then that's your problem?

You can get travel black out blinds for kids rooms on Amazon. Surely you viewed the house before you moved in?"

Are you always so lovely and kind?

Pure joy!
Fucking hell....

Well she'll have to wait then. Or hang a towel or sheets against the window. Seriously what else do you want to happen? Even if you had a case to get the light moved it's not going to happen that quickly.

This is why she is asking for tips, which other people have given 🤦🏻‍♀️

@concernedchild , presumably OP didn't lie down and try to sleep in the master bedroom?? 🙄

Contact the council and ask for it to be switched off at night. Made a massive difference in our street -they now go off at 11pm

Thirdsummerofourdiscontent · 23/03/2024 22:04

Are street lights not on all night everywhere? Ours are on from dusk to dawn.

Some council switch them off between midnight and 6 am to save money, except on main roads and high risk areas.

all councils have environmental targets
Web contacted them om our road and they now switch them all of at midnight winter and 11 pm summer

Thermal blackout curtains cost about £17 on Amazon, depending upon the length & width. They work fine for me.

BIossomtoes · 23/03/2024 20:09

I’d expect it to be on all night and it’s not keeping you awake during the day. There’s one outside our house and I don’t even notice it.

This is so helpful x

No, but she might get the Council to affix a deflector to stop the light shining into her bedroom.

Gettingbysomehow · 23/03/2024 22:26

Same problem here, I didn't notice how bad it was because I only viewed the house during the day. After much hassle and eventually writing to my MP the council put a thing like a lamp shade on it that reflects the light away from the house.
You don't realise how light pollution affects you unless you have a bright light shining into your window,

What before next month?? No chance!!

coffeenomore · 23/03/2024 22:29

Are you asleep OP?

Blueuggboots · 23/03/2024 22:29

Contact the local council and ask them to put a guard behind it to block the light.

AutumnFroglets · 23/03/2024 22:35

BobbyBiscuits · 23/03/2024 19:55

You should contact the council street lighting team. We had this issue and they ended up switching off the light fully. But once on the other side they put black tape over the top bit so it glared downwards only.
You can say it's disturbing your sleep. I found it was dealt with swiftly. If you get nowhere then contact local counsellor. It shouldn't come to that though.
Unless the lamp and road is owned by the developer? In that case I guess contact them.

I second this. They can fix something to it so it only shines down/in front.

Or, OR, the council might change the timer for it, they might switch it off, they might fit a device to redirect the glare. The light is potentially more likely to change than your attitude 😌

Kathy34 · 23/03/2024 22:36

Shoot the light out? Honestly, I've taken a bath towel and duct tape to block a way to light window before. Didn't look pretty but worked well
