I can’t believe how expensive food is now especially in the likes of Sainsbury’s for the same product. Total P-take, e.g. Organic Milk Sainsbury’s £2 Aldi £1.79.

Why give us ‘nectar’ prices when they are inflated prices in the first place? £5.50 for a Pizza Express Margherita and £2.75 on Nectar. I think actually it’s the fakery with making us think we are getting a good deal that’s pissing me off.

I went to Aldi today (we don’t have one near us) as I was doing a drop off nearby and the price difference is huge!!

Or be like Asda and add 30p every 3rd Thursday

StarlightLime · 22/03/2024 18:54

No, Sainsbury’s is not a budget supermarket 😂

comparing out of season strawberries in March to ones in season is not really a fair comparison!

Fair comment though it also does apply to soft fruit bought in the height of summer, especially when Aldi especially 'chill' their soft fruit to the point of tasting defrosted!

The bread from Lidl is excellent.

I occasionally have bought sliced, seeded bread from Lidl if I'm not going into a shop selling Seed Sensations and it is cheaper in Lidl but as the slices are much thicker it doesn't last as long! Their chocolate twists are amazing though.

BusyMummy001 · 22/03/2024 19:17

What really gets my goat is that if, for example, you buy milk or bread at asda is £x price; it’s the same price at Tesco or Sainsbury… but ONLY if you have their loyalty card! So lactofree milk is £1.35 with the card - or on Asda, Amazon Prime etc - but otherwise it’s £1.95 if you don’t agree to share all your shopping habit data and email!

mumedu · 22/03/2024 19:19

Some supermarkets totally rip you off - you are right. You can get the same thing a lot cheaper at a discount supermarket.

mumedu · 22/03/2024 19:21

TwistedSisters · 22/03/2024 14:52

Tesco milk 4 pints £1.45
Creamfields mild cheddar cheese 400g £2.49
Bananas 6pk 75p
Apples 6pk £1.39

All above are Aldi price match at Tesco.

I'm not advertising for Tesco BTW 😄 just I think it's a really common misconception that Aldi is 'loads' cheaper, other supermarkets do a lot of Aldi price match stuff too.

It really is loads cheaper at Aldi. I shop at Aldi for most things, then go to Sainsbury's for specialty items.

Stressedafff · 22/03/2024 19:22

I think it depends what you buy. My £55 weekly shop in Asda once cost nearly £75 from Aldi as the stock range was smaller and whereas I’d buy Asda own brand of something, Aldi didn’t have it so I ended up spending more. Plus their cereals are £1.99 for 11 bowls and I straight up refuse to pay that

Andthereyougo · 22/03/2024 19:24

I gave up on Tesco after they started dual pricing. Find Sainsbury’s expensive, uninspiring and slow.
Never had a problem with anything from Aldi and checkouts are fast with polite staff. M&S for anything extra.

Not for me it's not. I'd save barely anything on a weekly shop as almost everything I get from Sainsbury's is Aldi price matched.

Plus I make a few hundred in Nectar points each year, which more than covers any difference in price.

@umberelladay

Co-op are pretty good, however, I would say Waitrose are best in class for animal welfare and paying farmers fairly

This was a recent report and just shows you the huge gulf between Waitrose and the rest. This is about chickens. Co-op wasn't great but at least they shared the data

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1rWdHt8WGxdCzvr0cyleF-1qfeWNjHy80/edit?usp=sharing&ouid=102828016227421337152&rtpof=true&sd=true

I know this isn't going to be popular but I do believe that we need to be paying more for high quality, high welfare food.

I wouldn’t mind it so much if the extra money I pay went to the farmers etc rather than to line the pockets of the multimillionaires that own the supermarkets. I know, I know, I should buy everything from local farm shops and butchers, but the convenience of having a food shop delivered rather than a not-so-short drive to the farm shop makes such a difference 😩 I’ll try shopping at Waitrose more (do love Ocado!) if they’re the best of the bad bunch though.

@ThatCheekyKoala
Co-op and Waitrose (part of the John Lewis Partnership) are both co-operatives - owned by the workers. I wish they would market this, I am convinced most people don't realise this

Most of the rest are PLCs so are owned by the share holders, a lot of which are owned by the staff but are more open to 'multimillionaires'

mrlistersgelfbride · 22/03/2024 19:40

I like Sainsbury's, it's lovely. For saddo's like me, being on your own wandering around Sainsbury's for an hour is bliss 😅 their food is expensive but they have good offers and I like Nectar.
I hate Aldi from going week in week out when I was younger, I'm more of a Lidl girl.
Food is expensive these days but everything is.

Isn't all milk "organic" ?

Blimey no.
Cattle are given loads of crap to increase milk yield and prevent them getting diseases.

Exactly, they aren’t discounts. The clubcard / nectar card holders pay the normal price you would pay in any other shop. Everyone else gets charged an over inflated price - a penalty for not having a loyalty card.

Justpontificating · 22/03/2024 19:47

We ve been Lidl and Aldi shoppers for 20 years
By the sound of it I’d have a heart attack if I went into a ‘posh’ supermarket.

All food in both is great. I can’t get real Greek yoghurt and a few things like lentils so I go to Asda for those.

I love that Lidl do a varying range of unusual treats. Last week it was Japanese foods.

CHEESEY13 · 22/03/2024 19:48

In any supermarket the prices are still cost-of-living-crisis high but the governments various economic "experts" have been trumpeting about how inflation has significantly fallen.

Really?

Are you buying mostly branded stuff though?
Yes it is a lot cheaper if that's the case.

MerryChristmasToYou · 22/03/2024 19:50

@CHEESEY13 , Inflation is the rate of increase. For prices to come down, you need negative inflation.

TheFancyPoet · 22/03/2024 19:52

Our Sainsburys is dirty and dingy and I much prefer the local Liddle and obviously Waitrose

peakygold · 22/03/2024 19:52

We've started picking up Too Good To Go boxes/surprise bags. It's amazing what you get for a few quid. Aldi ones are especially good. Also, on Saturdays, we'll often book a Costa one for supper, because they always make sure you get something savoury and a cake/pastry.

Not that we have found.
We compared ( and regularly do) our normal shop from Aldi with Tesco, Sainsburies and Asda

Going for the cheapest available in the non Aldi shops. So not Heinz baked beans the cheapest one available.

Aldi was and always has been by far the cheapest. There are Huge savings. Even now after all the other shops try to match Aldi/ Lidl prices.

Ps. Couldnt compare prices with Lidl as their prices are not online

What’s ‘too good to go.’
Ive tried googling but can’t find a ‘dummies guide’ to what it is.

Really?

Inflation has fallen but it's still positive, meaning they're going up by less but still going up.
