Expensive drinks when buying rounds.

Arghh! I hate buying rounds anyway. But I wish people wouldn't ask for G&T with the more expensive gin. When 3 out of six people want one. It gets a bit pricey!

I’m probably one of those annoying people. I drink vodka Diet Coke but it has to be a can or bottle of Diet Coke as draught just spoils it for me.

i do try and buy the can on my round so that no one else has to pay extra for my drink though.

I'm exactly the same I get a double and hate the stuff out of the pump, so prefer to just stay on my own but then people will insist on buying me a drink so I then become part of the round (where there will always be at least one person who doesn't even buy) and then they will get me a single vodka and coke from the pump aarrrrgghh

At my local we socialise with couples and solos as a big group. Each person/couple has their own tab and everyone just settles up before they leave

My Diet Coke doesn’t not cost the same as an alcoholic drink of any type

Depends where you are. One of my locals sell draught beer at £1.99 a pint, whilst a pint of coke out of the squirty thing is £2.20

The people I go out with don’t tend to be buying cheap beer though. Tends to be cocktails or wine.

I can’t drink the coke from the pump, its rank and totally spoils the vodka.

i used to work in a pub and one guy would happily take drinks from the round and when it was his turn he would disappear off home! The guys eventually noticed and cut down who were in the round!

woahboy · 22/03/2024 22:59

If groups don't work. Of there are 12 people it's unlikely everyone will do a round and you can guarantee it's the sane ones who never end up doing them.

Rounds is some weird British thing. It's not normal anywhere else

People do buy drinks for others but not this organised thing.

I imagine back in the day when it was just pints it worked

FrenchandSaunders · 23/03/2024 08:23

@KimberleyClark that is shocking 😳

beanii · 24/03/2024 12:22

But if there's 6 of you, it should work out that you don't buy many rounds 🤷‍♀️

Hereforaglance · 24/03/2024 12:33

From. Someone who drinks whiskey I opt out of rounds as I am. Aware it can get expensive with a whiskey n coke

DillySorbet · 22/03/2024 06:36

How much is a gin and tonic? I’m curious as I don’t drink alcohol

Edited

Get them singles and ignore the request for fancy gin 😂

Hate that.
I usually get into rounds when it's family but we have a family member who is late teens (old enough to drink) who always asks for a "large" like a large vodka and coke or a large gin.
The rest of us will be on soft drinks, pints or halves.
The family member is always classed as a kid so isn't expected to buy a round, boils my piss.
Asked her once if it was her round and serious bad vibes ensued from her and her parent.

In that scenario that's downright cheeky. They should get a standard measure, if they start wanting doubles they can buy their own.

SadMumSEN · 24/03/2024 19:29

Ugh this reminded me of a night out with a CFer ExBF - I ended up being designated driver of him and his crumby mates, and I somehow got hoodwinked into rounds when I was on coke all night 🤦🏼‍♀️

PopandFizz · 24/03/2024 19:33

We do that the blokes do rounds but the women decide on a bottle of fizz or similar to share because it just gets ridiculous when everyone is getting spirits.
Spirit drinkers go to the bar themselves

TheChosenTwo · 24/03/2024 19:45

I don’t mind doing rounds, I prefer a nicer vodka and am happy to do more rounds to cover it but the people I go out with also happen to prefer ‘nicer’ gins and mixers or cocktails, craft beers (which are less expensive than nice cocktails mostly!) but in any event after the first couple rounds tend to break down a bit as people are all drinking at a different rate.
Yesterday a friend and I went for lunch, I was driving, she had 2 £18 cocktails and I had sparkling water, we just split the bill in half - I’m not quibbling with my mate about the price of drinks, she offered to pay more but I was happy to go halves, it all comes out in the wash overall.

Imisssleep2 · 25/03/2024 03:45

Mmmm it gets tricky with rounds, really is easier to stick to your own if you feel that way or at the very least partner up with one or two others that are on the same or similar priced drinks to you.

Years ago when drinking in pubs didn't require a remortgage (15 years ago) we used to do rounds, but this was when a pint would cost under £3, a round for 7/8 of us watching the rugby from midday till 9pm (six nations) would be like £20 and because we were there all day everyone would buy one mostly, no one would take the pee and order something more expensive on every one else's round etc.

The thing that used to bug me, was within this group that met, a few girlfriends would go, myself included and some of the girlfriends seem to think they were exempt from the round rota? I always brought my round (I was one of the girlfriends) but there was one who never did, sometimes her boyfriend would buy 2 to cover her but as everyone got more tipsy they didn't seem to realise he was just covering her round and would see it as he brought 2 if that makes sense.

Now drinks are so much more expensive, mostly we just buy within our couples when we are out, or if you do buy an extra one as your at the bar, that person is usually decent enough to buy you one back a bit later.

We recently went out with family who offered to treat us. They bought the food £55 (we had a 30% off voucher) we bought two rounds of drinks £58. And then we thanked them 😂 tbf they did buy a last round.

If you are the driver group to me you drink for free.

pontipinemum · 25/03/2024 09:13

I don't mind if that's what the person has been drinking all night. But I hate when, not on their round, a person suddenly says I'll have a double vodka red bull or something that's 3 times the price of a pint!

I haven't done rounds for years though

CuntRYMusicStar · 25/03/2024 09:45

If I'm in a round I'll either get cider or a glass of Pinot Grigio.

I do my upmost to avoid rounds through - much prefer to drink at my own pace and expense!

Fupoffyagrasshole · 25/03/2024 12:45

yeah i never get in rounds because of this - it's not fair - if I'm having a few beers that cost say 5£ or 6£ and someone else is on the cocktails that cost £12 - I'm paying out double what i would be if i just bought for myself!

Also i don't like the pressure of having to keep up with someone elses drinking pace!

QueenOfTheEntireFuckingUniverse · 25/03/2024 13:03

I got uninvited from a night out a few years ago because I refused to contribute equally to a kitty knowing I'd be drinking 1 soft drink to everyone else's 3 alcoholic ones. I also said i didn't want to do rounds as I knew my drinks were less frequent and cheaper than theirs.

I also refuse to do rounds when I'm out with my brother and SIL. Because they seem to think the 2 of them cost the same as 1 of me. I also refuse to split the bill 50/50 like they think I should!

BusterGonad · 25/03/2024 13:15

I hate rounds, unless we're drinking the same. I'm happy with beer or cider. Anyone on wine or spirits and I'll stick with getting my own.

BusterGonad · 25/03/2024 13:18

And just to add, it isn't sexist ime to say men are easy. I've worked in bars and over 90% of men have pints. They enjoy rounds and they keep it simple.

dutysuite · 25/03/2024 13:34

My husband doesn’t drink alcohol so in the past it’s worked out more expensive for him especially when one of his ex colleagues used to ask for champagne! Or when someone has the cheek to ask for a double! He sticks to himself now he doesn’t drink as fast as everyone else anyway.

Smokeysgirl · 25/03/2024 13:35

I had a "friend" who, when it was her round, always got herself a coke and as I knew she didn't have much money, I always ordered a coke too but when it was my round and I went to get two cokes, she'd suddenly pipe up that she'd have a Baileys!
